Gift voucher expired after only 3 months
Disappointed that a Christmas gift voucher became worthless after only 3 months and no goodwill solution was offered. I’ve contacted customer services but had no success.
Very disappointed with my experience with Six by Nico.
My partner bought me a Six by Nico gift voucher as a Christmas present. What neither of us realised was that it was only valid for three months. Given that most gift vouchers are valid for at least 12 months, this was not something we reasonably expected.
We had previously enjoyed Six by Nico’s cook-at-home meal boxes during COVID and were genuinely looking forward to finally experiencing the restaurant in person. Unfortunately, when we came to book, we discovered that the voucher had expired and was now worthless.
I contacted customer services to explain the situation and ask whether any goodwill solution could be offered. I wasn’t seeking a refund, only the opportunity to enjoy the experience that had been purchased for me. This was refused.
I fully accept that I should have checked the terms sooner. However, I think it is reasonable to expect a gift voucher to remain valid for longer than three months, particularly when it is presented as a gift experience.
If you are considering buying a Six by Nico voucher as a gift, I would strongly recommend checking the validity period very carefully before purchasing.
Very underwhelming experience, sadly, especially considering the price we paid and the high expectations built from looking up the place online and on its website.
The food was quite bland and the portions were small. Some dishes were good, but the rest not so much, and the whole experience felt very rushed by the staff. We expected a fine dining experience, but instead it left us feeling disappointed and underwhelmed.
We visited for the Seoul Korean theme. Some dishes were very basic and had barely any flavour at all, especially the first starter course. The rest were okay, but not impressive by any means. The cocktails were actually good, so we did enjoy those.
The service staff were polite and good at explaining the dishes, but they always seemed to be in a hurry and rushed us through the menu very quickly. At one point, we were asked three times if we had finished with our course when we were clearly still eating it. There was also some broken glass right next to our table, close to our feet, which could easily have been stepped on. Staff also took their time clearing that up, which was disappointing.
We had a gift voucher worth £150, which we used for the experience, and the final bill came to around £175 including the service charge. A £2 donation was automatically added to the bill, which we found a bit odd. We didn't remove it because we didn't want to seem difficult, but we would have appreciated being asked whether we wanted to contribute rather than having it added automatically. It felt quite strange, and we've never encountered that before.
Overall, I would not choose to return to this venue or recommend it to friends, which is sad considering how excited and hyped we were to try it and have a lovely evening. For the money charged, the experience simply did not live up to expectations. A 2-star review overall, at a push.
That said, this is simply our honest experience from our visit. We'd be happy to give Six by Nico another chance if the venue manager would like to reach out and address some of the concerns raised above, as we genuinely wanted to enjoy the experience and leave with a much better impression.
Don't care about new mums
I was a regular customer, dining at 6 by Nico every 6 weeks for the last few years, never alone, mostly group of 4-6.
I have purchased vouchers at the Christmas time on sale, two vouchers for 2 people each. Usually the vouchers are valid 6 months min. This one, surprisingly , was only 3 months - something I have missed on and wasn't clear when purchasing the vouchers.
As a new mum with a little baby at home, it is not easy to organise the time out of the house. But I wanted to go there for my brother's bday and while booking the table it became apparent that the voucher is no longer valid (it was 6 days after it expired)
I have messaged 6 By Nico straight away asking if they could honour this and gave my reasons. I did not receive a response at all. Few weeks later I have chased and after another week I finally got a reply with not expected outcome of not being able to extend the voucher. I have asked if as a goodwill geusture they can at least provide extension for 2 not 4 people and I also got a "No".
As a regular customer, someone who introduced tens of people to the business but mostly, as a new mum, I was really shocked and disappointed how inflexible the company is.
Rude Staff
Very rude and arrogant staff. I went for a drink at Six by Nico in Oxford. I sat outside for 10 minutes without being served. I asked at the entrance and the lady there explained that they didn’t have enough staff to serve outside. I said no problem, I’ll just order at the bar. I ordered a beer at the bar. Then a waiter came up to me and told me off for ordering at the bar. He said that in this case he could allow it and take my payment. I left the beer and left the place. Won’t go back.
Unable to redeem a Six by Nico voucher…
Unable to redeem a Six by Nico voucher due to lack of availability before expiry. Customer service was slow to respond and ultimately offered no flexibility or alternative solution. Disappointing outcome given the circumstances.
Great Experience
We had an excellent 6 course Soeul tasting menu today at Birmingham restaurant The food was lovely and full of flavour. Our waitress was so helpful and explained every course to us in detail. We will definitely return
Big company wrong doing customers and don't reply to negative reviews it appears STEER CLEAR
Bought £100 worth of vouchers in the black friday sale and planned to use them in the Birmingham restaurant from my birthday in June believing they had a standard 6 month expiry. However, I have just tried to use them and realised they only had 3 months. I have emailed the team and been told there is nothing they can do to extend them! There is always something that can be done, they are just choosing not to. They didn't even offer any of it. Disappointed is an understatement. £100 is a lot of money and it was a genuine mistake. SHAME ON YOU LOT... REALLY BAD ADMIN!!!
Not the best meal of all times
Deansgate Manchester. Not the best meal of all times. There was a bad sewage smell in the restaurant. The waiter opened all doors and windows which helped but it was cold so coat was worn throughout. Meal was ok. Fish was very good but beef course was cold. Overall a let down for what was a very expensive meal.
We attended Six by Nico in Birmingham…
We attended Six by Nico in Birmingham for the Korean theme week. My girlfriend is Korean, so she was really excited about it.
Unfortunately, the food itself felt like a pretty weird interpretation of Korean dishes, to the point where we couldn’t really call them Korean. We had the 6-course menu each, along with the 5-course cocktail pairing.
The cocktails were very good, but the food itself could definitely have been better.
On a positive note, the overall experience was pleasant from the very start. The person who greeted us and the waiters were professional, friendly, and made us feel welcome.
In my opinion, it was a bit overpriced, but I know that’s subjective, so I’m not letting that affect the star rating too much.
Overall, nice service and great cocktails, but the Korean food theme missed the mark for us.
Cardiff- Unfortunately
Cardiff- Unfortunately, our experience at the Sherlock Holmes-themed menu fell short of our expectations and didn’t match the price.
My partner and I started with an aperitif and two shared snacks: pommes anna ‘chips’ and mac and cheese croquettes. The aperitif and extra drinks we ordered arrived after the snacks, and our first course came halfway through finishing the snacks. We felt rushed and our table was cluttered with glasses and plates. The table was also wonky, which our server quickly fixed. I appreciated that.
The pommes anna ‘chips’ were too heavily seasoned with Parmesan, overpowering the truffle royale. The mushroom velouté was overly salty, and the sole ballotine wasn’t deboned well enough. One lodged in my throat and I caught four more after learning my lesson. The Atelier was far too sweet.
The wine pairing was excellent and complemented each course perfectly. The toilets were in poor condition. Water was all over the basin ledge and the hand dryer wasn’t working,
The game was fun, though. We enjoyed trying to crack the case. Unfortunately, the rush, some of the food, and the toilets’ standard didn’t meet my expectations. I’ve had more enjoyable meals, better service, and nicer facilities at other al a carte restaurants for less.
I’m sorry to give negative feedback, but this is my honest review.
Great dining experience
We recently had the most incredible dining experience at Six by Nico, and I honestly can’t recommend it highly enough.
The six-course tasting menu was themed around Sherlock Holmes, and from start to finish it was imaginative, theatrical, and absolutely delicious. Each course was beautifully presented and cleverly tied into the theme – it felt like we were being taken on a culinary mystery tour, with surprises at every turn.
What truly made the evening unforgettable, however, was our waiter, William. Amazingly, it was his first day – something we could hardly believe given how confident, engaging, and polished he was. He didn’t just serve the dishes; he performed them. His storytelling, humour, and sense of drama brought each course to life and added a whole extra layer to the experience. He explained everything with such flair and enthusiasm, making us feel completely immersed in the theme.
It’s rare to come across service that elevates a meal so significantly, but William did exactly that. He made what was already a fantastic experience feel truly special and memorable.
A huge thank you to Six by Nico for such a creative and enjoyable evening – and especially to William, who was absolutely brilliant. We’ll definitely be back!
Leeds -We went back a 2nd time along…
Leeds -We went back a 2nd time along with my son and his fiancé and what a let down. Same menu as before and the portions were a lot smaller than last time round. We will not be returning
Over promised and under delivered, with not even enough cutlery
Bristol restaurant. I am afraid I must echo so may other reviews. 7 of us were left at the door for a while , while the greeter searched multiple times for someone's coat as they were leaving. Needless to say we held on to our coats! Waiter was lovely but food was very much lacking. Chicken particularly that night was inedible for some of the table. Mine was massively over seasoned and dry and stringy. Really unpleasant. And I was not the only one. It is also very, very rushed, with cutlery not even being swapped between courses, just dirty cutlery placed back on the table by staff as plates were taken . When we asked for the hot chocolate which was on the menu, we were told initially that we didn't have enough time. The waiter went to check and as the table was not booked out after us, we could have it. All very well and good but don't put something on the menu if it can't be offered due to the table timings. They also ran out of clean teaspoons so we had to use our pudding spoons to stir the cream ( Served separately and whipped) The soup was very nice and the creme brulee was nice too - but that's about it None of it was memorable. I'm afraid it's a classic case of over promised and under delivered. And a restaurant rationing , then running out of cutlery ! That is such a basic requirement for a restaurant that it makes me wonder if perhaps there are financial troubles. Anyway , I am sad to say we won't be back
Edit - Also interesting to note that SixbyNico have not responded to any reviews - either good or bad. You'd almost think they didn't care...........
I am honestly mystified by all these…
I am honestly mystified by all these poor reviews!! Maybe they are location specific? 🤷♀️
I go regularly to the Canary Wharf one, and several times to Oxford, and have an excellent experience every time! Food is delicious, service, apart from one isolated occasion, excellent and we love the tasting menu concept. If you want to rush your meal in an hour or so - don’t come here!!
Top stars for Gwen and her team at Canary Wharf. See you soon! 😊
Great food and service
The food was excellent both in its presentation and taste, we felt it was close to Michelin star standard! Our waiter, James S, explained each dish extremely well which made the dishes even more interesting. The other members of the team that we had contact with were all excellent and spoke knowledgably about both the food and wine flight. James S was particularly good in explaining the wines using is own words and also about the wines availability online.
Rip off tactics
Four of us booked the 6 course French tasting menu last Saturday with wine pairing. The food was so-so and some of the wines pretty rough, one was very good. The place is noisy and dark and the service was pretty poor - the server sped through his lines and we couldnt hear most of it. The bill arrived at the end and we noticed that the tip park was empty so we were happy to leave it so. Arriving home we saw that they had already added £57 for service, which we had not seen and we feel totally cheated.
Dreadful customer service
We were given a voucher as a present but were not aware of a very short expiry date. We had our meal which was very average and expensive only to have our voucher refused. Subsequent attempts to have it extended for future use were refused in a very off hand manner. Would not recommend this restaurant in Belfast. Can't remember the exact date.
Dismal experience at Leeds restaurant.
Dismal experience at Leeds restaurant.
When we first arrived, the tone of the evening was set by how closely packed together all the tables were. Whilst we understand the package is designed to be affordable, the extremely close proximity to guests really does cheapen the experience, particularly when you can hear other tables thoughts on the dishes before you get to try them. The experience only went further downhill from here.
We started the meal with an aperitif which were brought to the table by our first waiter, Charlie. After placing the drinks on the table, Charlie then had to take one of them back to the bar to get remade. Using Charlie's language "that's completely unacceptable".
During our first course, we observed staff bringing open bins between the kitchen and bar. Due to where we were sat, this was within 0.5m of us. We hope you can understand how this further cheapened the experience.
After the second course fresh cutlery were brought to the table by Charlie. Except just as he was placing it on the table, he noted that it wasn't clean and asked someone else to make sure we had clean cutlery and that the rest of the cutlery in the kitchen was properly cleaned.
Two courses in, and our experience was already at a place where there was little hope of retribution. What followed was a very below average dining experience. Food was poorly seasoned, and on some courses we saw that plates were left on the pass for over five minutes before being brought to us, resulting in lukewarm food arriving at our table.
A particular highlight was the fourth course. We were told that the Bordeaux was chosen to work well with the richness of the macaroni cheese. We were not aware that richness was a synonym for greasiness. It was at this point that our waiters were switched, we had no communication around this.
At this point we were on our final course, and decided to ask to speak to a manager. We ended up having to repeat the complaints to two members of staff. The first member of staff told us that he was a supervisor and that the general manager would not be in until Monday. You can imagine our surprise when the second member of staff then told us that he was the general manager. The second member of staff seemed dismissive that open bins being brought out in front of dining customers was an issue, and that it was perfectly hygienic. It was notable that a different member of staff brought out a bin whilst we were having this conversation.
We were offered a return visit to make up for the experience we had. Under no circumstances can we ever imagine feeling comfortable eating at this restaurant again. We booked this experience based on word-of-mouth feedback from multiple friends and colleagues. We're not quite sure how multiple recommendations could be quite so off.
We can say with confidence that we could have picked any high street food chain and had a much better dining experience. Words cannot describe how far short of expectations our experience was.
Paris experience Edinburgh Hanover street
First trying six by Nico and have to say was really impressed by both the food and service. I had the wine flight as well and would definitely recommend.
Alannah our fabulous server was so knowledgeable and friendly and 100% added to our experience.
We shall be back soon. Thank you
Myself and my son were so excited to…
Myself and my son were so excited to visit , what an absolute disappointment.
If you want cold food, rushed service, deserts before you have been served your main and then a vegetarian being served chicken then this is a place for you! Would have given it a 2 as 2 of the courses were very tasty (chicken served warm and a crème brûlée this was very tasty - just a shame they hadn’t cleared the table) so why do I say 1 ! The cherry on the cake was being told that we had 5 mins before they needed the table back for the next reservation
That meant we had been there for 1 hour 15 - served cold food that I had to send back , served food in the wrong order and a waiter that couldn’t pour hot chocolate into the cup - everywhere but!
Didn’t pay there service charge … spoke to the manager who deducted £20
However, I do suggest he knew we hadn’t had a great experience but couldn’t process a card refund as we had already paid ! Hence taking cash part refund
A luxury that isn’t actually a luxury !
