Expensive and pathetic

Splitspot is there to remind you that every company's core goal is, of course, to make money. Don't let yourself be fooled by the low prices - I rented a tiny bedroom in an unsanitary appartment in Somerville, price was already crazy at $1 244 per month, but I was told Boston is one of the most expensive places to live in America. I rented the place for 4 months. Final bill, with the monthly rent, utility fees, wi-fi, electricity, gas, inspection fee, move in fee, move out fee, service fee, special flexibility fee, website maintenance fee, etc etc, amounted to $6 913. $1 728 per month. This doesn't include the $400 deposit and the fact that you have to pay last month's rent beforehand. And you know what? That pathetic room? It wasn't EVEN furnished. It was also poorly insulated, dirtier than a garage and the basement was infested with rats. There was no air vent over the stove, no table to eat, no microwave. I'm not even kidding.

Splitspot service was also very loose. It took them 5 weeks to figure out what i owe them in terms of utilities because of problems with their billing partner. Their only active job basically. And they don't even know what's happening below : they didnt have the right password for the wifi, didn't know that one of my roommates have a dog, etc.

Think twice before living in Boston. If you must, find friends and buy something nice to split between trusted roommates.

Horrible management of Property

Horrible management of properties. They are unresponsive to emails, and you never know when they might decide to drop the property, giving you a quick turn around on trying to find a new place. If you’re in it for a short term lease, just sublet. Yes, there leases are illegal. Usually unsigned by them. I never received lead law documents that were required by law in Massachusetts. They’ll keep your security deposit for a cleaning service, which is an absolute joke because I had the pleasure of sticking around the place after I had moved out because my friend was still a tenant, and they threw water on the floor and tracked mud everywhere. Truly the most horrendous experience ever. Never again.

Run away like your life depends on it, because it probably does. I have a very "can do" optimistic attitude and even though I read the reviews I thought "how bad can it really be?". Bad. So bad. No heat in the middle of winter. No hot water when it's below freezing, for days on end. Random unexplained fees. No internet service (had to have someone install it myself). Any maintenance problem you have, they send you a YouTube video or wikiHow article and expect you to do the work of a licensed plumber, electrician, etc. However much money you think you're saving in rent, you will lose in other costs, fees, lost sleep, moving again when it becomes unbearable. This company should be bankrupted in fines from the city but there is no recourse for fighting this slumlord organization. This company is a stain on the city of Boston and should be regulated out of existence. RUN.

Splitspot is the MOST ILLEGAL company I have ever personally known. They must have the most incredible legal team because they should have been sued about five million times by now.

NEVER EVER use Splitspot. EVER.

This company is not afraid to break the law. I have been waiting for almost two months and have still not received my deposit back from them. The room was in great condition and clean when I left. No one in the company knows what they are doing and will give you flat out incorrect information. They also don't read emails correctly to answer your questions or concerns. I would rate them even lower if I could. Please save yourself some trouble and never rent from them.

Okay if you’re looking to avoid a 12 month lease

My experience with Splitspot was okay for the most part. The flexible leases are a huge plus. Basically, you pay month to month and can move out any time as long as you give 3 months notice (which is a bit overkill imo, but still better than signing a 12 month lease). I like the business model, and I wish there were more organizations like Splitspot that operate this way. However, my main complaints are with the quality of the rooms and the roommates. The first place I moved into was a room for just under $900 a month. It was basically a closet. And there were ants. The rest of the house was extremely dirty and had a horrible rat infestation. I lived there for about a month before one of the roommates started threatening us, and we all had to move out. I will commend Splitspot for how they handled this though. They got us into a new property right away and moved all of our furniture. The new place was a lot cleaner, and it worked out because I was a lot happier there, in spite of it being a longer commute for me. I stayed there for around 8 months. However, one of my roommates was… odd to say the least. I came back after travelling to visit family and found my doorknob had been taken off. He denied doing it in spite of us being the only 2 people living there at the time. Needless to say, it made me pretty uncomfortable. Overall, Splitspot is alright, but I’d recommend seeing the properties in person before signing the lease. Also be aware that Splitspot attracts some… interesting people. So be careful about roommates.

NEVER Rent with SplitSpot

Have never had customer service as poor as this before. Never received keys to the building, lock boxes were empty and no codes had even been provided. 6 weeks with broken AC during two 95 degree heatwaves in Boston and after 3 weeks all they did was reset the breaker, AC was never even fixed, I was just moved out. Was then charged for full utilities even with the broken AC, $75 out of my security deposit just to review the property even after photos of empty clean room were provided? Tours of the apartment with no notice given, and we were only informed of any visits after they would have come.

Scum Business, Avoid Like The Pleague.

Worst experience dealing with a company I've ever had in my life. Screwed me over by dragging me along for a full week telling me I was all set for a place and that they would send me the lease and then last minute said that the apartment was no longer available. They offered me another spot and then another with the same result. Fool me three times shame on me, I guess. I'd been staying in an air bnb and they made me run out my reservation thinking I was set. I canceled tours of other apartments because of them and then was left scrambling to find a new place to go the day before I was about to become homeless. Ended up finding a motel (which wasn't cheap) but I was this close to living in my car. And let me be clear, this wasn't a situation where the roommates rejected me, all three spots had no roommates yet, they either didn't know which rooms were actually available or straight up lied. I am NEVER rude to customer service people but this time I snapped and chewed them out over email because, oh yeah, you can't even call them - only text and email. Completely unacceptable to treat a customer or another human like that. Disgusting.

I won't use their service...

I won't rent with them because they demonstrate they are not available to their customers even during the onboarding stage, so how can I trust them to be there for me during a tenancy? The truth is, I cannot. Their non-existent help during the pre-rental stage includes no email, chat, or question ever being addressed; bot answers are all I get, and if it's this bad pre-rental than SplitSpot is a "no go". Trustpilot is wrong to give them 2.9 stars when they only have 2 reviews at this writing, each being 1 star only.

Never use splitspot

We are having a hell experience with this awful company. My son was given a dirty wet room underground in Boston. The room now was flooded after a boiler broke down. Nobody is willing to contact us by phone and they don't respond to emails. The only emails we receive from them are reminders of future payments. We are told that the organisation is managed by a gang from Guatemala but we will end up taking them to court in the US.

New to SplitSpot, Boston, June 1 2022

New to SplitSpot, Boston as of June 1. I was given a key on the first day that did not fit any door - the front door of the building, the Unit door handle lock or the Unit deadlock. And was not given a mail key.
As a result, I incurred additional moving expenses because the movers could not unload the truck.
I had to call a locksmith and was waiting for this person when the local SplitSpot rep finally came to the property at about 9pm at night to knock on the landlord's door so that we could enter using his keys.
A few days and communications later, SplitSpot dropped off a set of two keys, which still did not fit the Unit doorknob lock or deadbolt. And no mail key.
To this day - 11 days into a lease that I have signed, abided by, and paid fees in a timely fashion - I still have not been furnished with keys that fit. And have not been given any plan for resolution by SplitSpot of Boston.
A renter can only enter the building but is still locked out of the unit, except for the kindness of roommates.
And SplitSpot continues to avoid their responsibility.
Unacceptable, unprofessional and unsafe.
