AVOID WAVE AT ALL COSTS - They Will Hold Your Money Hostage

If I had the option to give zero stars, or negative stars, that would be more accurate.

If you value getting paid in a reasonable timeframe, RUN from Wave.

I had a client pay via bank transfer. Wave’s system showed the payment received, but then decided to hold MY money for an indefinite “2-7 business days” with ZERO transparency, ZERO ability to expedite, and ZERO care for the fact that small business owners rely on timely payments.

Their customer “service” is an outsourced nightmare - completely useless, scripted responses, no ability to actually help. Oh, and they are o ly open 4 hours a day during the busiest time of the day. They are ALWAYS experiencing “unusual” support tickets. When I explained I needed the funds urgently, they basically shrugged and said “wait.” No empathy, no solutions, no accountability.

The UX is confusing and poorly designed. They don’t clearly communicate which payment methods qualify for instant payout vs. being held hostage. The instant transfer marketing tactics are deceitful. There whole operation is deceitful. They seem like a con job.

For a payment processing company, the ONE JOB is to process payments reliably and transparently. Wave fails spectacularly at both.

Small businesses deserve better. I’m switching to literally ANY other platform - Stripe, Square, PayPal, even Venmo for Business would be better than this disaster.

Wave: You’re holding people’s livelihoods hostage with your incompetent processing times and non-existent customer service. Do better, or get out of the business.

TL;DR: Wave will receive your payment, confirm it’s there, then hold it for a week+ with no recourse. Absolute garbage platform. You’ve been warned.

A complete waste of time and money

A complete waste of time and money. Submitted multiple tickets for the same request only to have all of the tickets closed with no resolve. Never could run a single payroll due to problems from the start. No phone help whatsoever as they do not offer phone support. Everything must go through AI chat or email. Most emails went with no response. After a couple of months I cut my losses and moved on, leaving hours upon hours of wasted time, money and constant frustrations behind.

Absolutely horrible experience

Absolutely horrible experience. I started using them a year ago and they were ok. However, in June of 2025 they changed their service to partner with a new payroll partner and all of my services shut down. Second half of June payroll is shut down and I could not pay my employees. You cannot contact a live agent through chat so only via email. None of my emails were answered for over three weeks, and i sent around 4 emails. They sent one lame email from their marketing department to all customers that failed to take any responsibility or outline a fix. I still cannot run payroll with them and still cannot contact anyone from the company. Absolute nightmare for a small business.

I want to share my frustrating…

I want to share my frustrating experience with Wave so others can avoid what happened to me. I signed up with my legal business, provided all the required information (website, registered name, EIN, and business license), and received an email confirming that I was approved to receive payments.

I sent an invoice to a new customer for my mobile notary and wedding officiant services, and the customer paid. Wave charged a fee and then another fee to deposit the funds into my business bank account. I delayed setting up the deposit for one day.

The next day at 12:47 PM—after I had already performed the wedding ceremony—I got an email saying Wave refunded the payment to my customer because they “couldn’t verify my business.” I checked my account, and all my information was complete and accurate.

I spent over an hour waiting to speak with customer support, only to be told there was nothing they could do. I emailed the "Risk Office" and was pointed to their Terms of Service, which provided no clarification or help. I offered to provide any documentation they needed to verify my business, but they refused.

Now, I face the embarrassment of asking my customer to pay me again, knowing they’ll have to wait 3-5 business days for the refund to process. This has been a terrible experience that has cost me time, money, and professional credibility.

I will never do business with Wave again and strongly encourage others to avoid them. I’ve since discovered that others have had similar issues, and it just doesn’t make sense. If you’re considering using Wave for payment processing, think twice.

Best Money Transfer to Africa - Period

I travel to Kenya and East Africa often, and rarely take much cash with me because of Wave. I use Wave to send cash to my mobile money account and it arrives in seconds. So, I can pay a taxi driver straight from my US bank account to their phone in seconds. I can pay myself on my phone and cash out as needed in the cities where i am working. It's a great, simple trustworthy app and a must have for regular travellers to the region.
