i work as a Professional Carer looking after a Retired lady Doctor and i encounter the staff working with better uk highbury and islington leisure center ,I met Ms Frances the day i registered the Lady that im looking after from my inquiries until registering online to be a member of Highbury leisure center she really very helpful in all means as i dont know how to swim and she encourage me to try be on water with the lady i look after its so excellent all the support are given with the help of Mr Dmitry proud of then for everything and now i got back my confident to be in water the Pool is so nice and clean the shower room is clean,the changing room are very good and even the locker your belongings are safe im recommending to register to Better.Org.uk for activities swimming gym etc,once again thank you very much Ms Frances and Mr Dmitry come and join us registered to be fit we will go back again thank you very much Highbury and Islington leisure Center for the good services you rendered see you soon.

Changed contract with no warning!
I have been using the Batter Gym for 3 months. This entire time it has given me access to 5 gyms in my area. They've happily taken my money and given me access to Highbury Gym for 3 months but now apparently access is denied? They have literally changed the terms of my contract, I know because i have copy of what I signed up to originally. They have changed the contract without warning or notifying me, then have the audacity to say its always been this way even when I'm showing them hard evidence to the contrary.

Terrible classes. One particular instructor didn't provide any corrections when using weights. Some very interesting positions that compromised back health

Classes are cancelled without notice, while members are unfairly fined for cancelling
Class teachers get free reign to cancel classes whenever they wish, including at the very last second. Better never communicate this to customers, of course, until you're stood outside the class waiting like a lemon for 10+ minutes. When it's not that, Better Highbury replaces the usual class with something completely different, again without letting customers know. People then end up walking out of the class in disappointment, which creates awkwardness and embarrassment on all sides.
Meanwhile, members of the gym who are paying nearly £100 per month are fined if they need to cancel a class less than 4 hours in advance. I could perfectly understand if they were repeat offenders, but it's completely unfair if you're unable to attend due to circumstances out of your control. Why not do what Nuffield do and adopt a "3 strikes then you start getting fined" policy, or simply allowing members to cancel up to an hour in advance without being financially punished for it? The thing is, most of the classes are always completely booked out, and many have waiting lists, so it's not like one or two cancellations are depriving others of joining a class. It's just pure greed on Better's part and I would expect Better from a council-subsidised gym.

I am truly sorry to hear that you've experienced some issues at the Highbury Leisure Centre. We always strive to provide the best possible service to our customers, so it's disappointing to hear that we've fallen short in your case. I want you to know that we take all feedback seriously and we'll do everything we can to address the issues you've raised.
Regarding our Fitness Classes, we do our best to ensure they run smoothly and are only cancelled if an Instructor is unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances. We understand that this can be frustrating, but please know that we will always try to find a cover Instructor before cancelling a session.
With regards to the penalty fee, we have this in place to ensure that everyone has a fair chance to book activities. We appreciate that sometimes things come up and plans change, which is why we offer the option to cancel activities online. If you ever need to cancel at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances, please don't hesitate to speak to a member of staff and they will be happy to help you out.
Once again, thank you for your feedback. We hope that you'll continue to enjoy your membership at the Highbury Leisure Centre and that we can make your experience with us a positive one.

Unfit older adults
My point below is that classes are not suitable for unfit older people !
Pool is excellent. I previously had the 60+ annual membership I upgraded ,when it wouldn’t automatically renew on line , to gym and class access for additional £20 pcm (£240 pa v £5 pa previously) Gym very big . I don’t use it . Nor sauna Lot of classes but not really suitable for older people who are not fit or who are recovering from injury . I will persevere for a while and then review and go back to swimming only and do older adult classes elsewhere

Thank you for your review.
A £5 per annum membership would be a pay-as-you-go membership so you would have to pay for any activities you attend.
The Senior Partnership annual membership covers you for gym, swimming, group fitness classes and health suite access across Islington so works out much better value if you are using the centres on a regular basis.

I like the convenience of Better gyms…
I like the convenience of Better gyms and leisure centres, but since my nearest one was rebuilt after a fire, the women only sessions have been dropped. This is a huge disappointment to me and I am sure lots of other women. The swimming for women only, was always full, so they can't say this service is not valued. I wish they would recommence.

I have a serious lung condition and whenever they see me using my inhaler or taking a seat because I am short of breath, they always come to ask if I am ok. I was very impress when I saw them doing deep cleaning the Sauna area last night.
Last week I went to Islington tennis center after a long time to do a body conditioning with Mikey, and the Women changing room,toilets and floors are were disgusting and unhygienic.
The sauna door was widely open, the floor was very wet etc.
I think the steam/sauna room should have a code to enter and monitored like Highbury and Sobell.

The staff were extremely helpful and…
The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. When I came in to join on the 5th oct 2023. And they completed setting up my membership for me. And the direct debit didn’t go through the first time. And they had to call head office. And do the membership process all over again.
I have been to Highbury twice since I joined and I’m enjoying swimming sauna and steam.
