A member of New Barnet Leisure Centre, I really enjoy coming here, whether for the swimming pool, the gym or classes. The staff are unfailingly friendly and helpful and the "feng shui" must be good because there's a generally good vibe here. I recently asked to freeze my membership while recovering from surgery. Both the freeze and my subsequent request to end the freeze were dealt with promptly and efficiently.

Not many classes, everything fully booked...
I was few months now at Better in Southgate which I was satisfied with and chose it mainly because of the Sauna but as I live next to the New Barnet one I decided to change and try this one instead. I am not pleased I must say. The treadmill is not as new as the Southgate ones and doesn't have all the routines and courses I used to do which were amazing. I can't seem to be able to book myself for classes even one week in advance, nearly everything gets booked up the moment the classes are live to book. I am a busy mum and I can only attend this gym twice a week and if I can't ever attend a class then it is completely pointless going here.they have way less classes than the Southgate one and not many spaces to book are left. I find this unfair as I pay more money per month now and don't have access to the same stuff I used to have. You have to increase your classes or workout something as I am on 4 waiting lists atm and still can't get anything even when I get the email of a free space. Everything's gone within seconds. Very disappointed

New Barnet Leisure centre - bad managment, ageist and unresponsive
Since lockdown , aqua aerobics classes are very popular. Demand is 3 times bigger than capacity. Only 2 classess per week. being able to book is impossible- website crashes every time class becomes available for booking. It's mostly women over 60 who use this class. We have asked and asked and requested to increase nb of classes or at least capacity nbrs per class. 2 weeks ago capacity has been reduced. We were told swimmers - schools take priority. Managment is totally unresponsive to our pleading and our needs. In spite of advertising how much "better" cares for community's mental and physically wellbeing. Elderly are overlooked and not heard at all. Same comes to lane swimming, mornings are reserved for schools . Only before 8 am and after 1:30pm lane swimming is available. Not considerate to those who work afternoons and evenings. 90% of staff are really good with exception of 2 guys whom I had bad expierience with. It is an ageist attitude to members - example. : Often - before aqua class, there will be major cleaning taking place in changing rooms - spaghetti junction of cables on the floor + big water hoovers and hoses. Aqua class is attended by elderly women- in their 70ies, 80ies and with impaired walking- using walking sticks and crutches. This is "accident waiting to happen " hazard. I myself talked to staff about how dangerous that is, only to be dismissed with no regard to concern I was trying to raise.
I don't know why aqua classes cannot be increased. Copthall leisure centre has aqua aerobics class every day, 2 classes some days. It is very disappointing and frustrating and it does not match "better's" manifesto.

We are disappointed to hear that you are unhappy with the class programme at New Barnet.
We always want to provide as many classes as possible but it isn't always possible to add classes, due to factors like; programme of the centre, staff who are trained for that particular class, staff availability etc.

Joined for weight management
My gp suggested to join the Better programme with a view to lose weight. I have a reasonably affordable membership to New Barnet Leisure Centre with full access and will start some Nutrition seminar in May. I'm currently going to the gym. Had an initial phone and trainer consultation and have a circuit to follow. It's good for the self motivated. The centre is overall very good. Although the first thing that greets you at the entrance is ice cream promo board. The cafeteria is right by the entrance with a limited offer of healthy snacks/drinks which is not beneficial as it is also right next to the children's swimming pool. It would be ideal to set up a place that makes fresh juices, smoothies, healthy choices for snacking. The gym could also do with an actual playlist of different music at different hours instead of radio fm show. There is people of all ages that may enjoy & respond to a wiser & wider choice of background music. Reach out if you want me to create banging playlists for you (free of charge). Anyways, overall happy that I joined this centre. It's super close and the recreation ground, outdoor gym and trees and singing birds make it all better.

We had our first lesson- swimming…
We had our first lesson- swimming lesson for kids over 4, sensory option.
The kid was delighted. The swimming teacher was so good - professional and friendly, and definetely knows how to deal with kids. FIRST thing our son said when leaving - i want to go to the swimming pool again.
I am not sure about the name of the teacher - it’s 1 PM Friday class.thank you very much!
