A lovely meal and venue
We booked Ego at Wyke Lion for a family birthday meal. After reading some reviews we were a bit apprehensive. So glad we ignored the negatives. We all had fantastic meals. Plenty of choice for all. The service was great and we will definitely return in the future.

Nice food but the mini dessert with liqueur coffee was terrible. Weak coffee, tiny amount of liqueur couldn’t taste, mini crumble no ice cream or custard.
Ego - Kingsclere
Ego Kingsclere. Waiters were lovely and helpful, service was fairly quick. The food was atrocious. I had a rump steak that was really stringy and constantly getting stuck in my teeth. I would have had a sirloin but they were sold out. My onion rings were soggy and tasted raw, chips were nice though. My fiancé had a cod supreme and mussels which were most likely undercooked as she has spent the whole evening since getting home on the toilet with a burning ring of fire and very upset stomach. Never returning.
A birthday Sunday lunch that fell short, despite careful planning
This was a disappointing experience, particularly given how much advance planning was required.
We booked a table for 15 for a Sunday birthday lunch and were required to pre-order all meals via the app.
One guest is pescetarian with a hazelnut allergy, but the only vegetarian/vegan Sunday option was a nut roast containing hazelnuts. No alternative vegetarian roast or substitution was available. We were advised to order from the main menu instead, which was fine, but it meant paying significantly more than everyone else having the roast offer. The app also repeatedly applied the Sunday set price incorrectly, charging £22.95 for a dessert.
Between phone calls, emails and app issues, over an hour was spent trying to order this one meal, and the organiser (the birthday guest) spent over three hours finalising the group booking. In the end, the restaurant agreed the guest could bring their own pre-cooked vegetarian sausages, while still paying the full set price.
On the day, despite all meals being pre-ordered, main courses were served around an hour after arrival.
A menu change (with no notification) meant another guest with a garlic allergy had to change their order at the table, and was unable to have the roast potatoes due to garlic seasoning. We acknowledge that a garlic allergy is rare but despite it being noted on the booking, the garlic seasoning on the roast potatoes hadn’t been mentioned previously.
After lunch, we were told the coffee order would be taken after dessert, but were then asked to vacate the table before this could happen. The table had originally been booked from 12–3pm, but less than 24 hours before the booking an email changed this to 12–2:30pm.
I spoke to the manager on the day, who listened and apologised, acknowledging that several aspects of the experience fell short and could have been handled differently. However, given the impact on what should have felt like a special occasion, we were surprised that no gesture or adjustment was offered to reflect the experience.
Staff were friendly and polite, the atmosphere was lovely, and the sparklers on my sister's dessert were a thoughtful touch – thank you. But the experience felt unnecessarily time-consuming and disorganised. We had expected clearer communication and a smoother experience on the day.
We’ve had excellent meals at Ego Penhow in the past, which made this visit particularly disappointing. I hope this feedback helps improve the experience for future group bookings.
Nice decor and staff
Staff were nice, food was not very good. Prices too high and I was annoyed that the company had put a £20 tip on the bill! I would not go there again.
Ego used to be one of my midweek…
Ego used to be one of my midweek favourites. I couldn’t fault the food, good value with offers. I’m not sure if it’s been taken over but the last 2 visits (one being for the Xmas menu) have been so disappointing.
The food portions have shrunk whilst the prices have increased. I know shrinkflation is everywhere but for the prices, it’s ridiculous. The thinnest sirloin steak I’ve ever seen although they go by weight I think it must have been to fill the plate. 3 of the smallest onion rings and 1 mushroom. The pizza was extortionate for the size and quality. Garlic mushrooms that hardly covered the bottom of the dish. I couldn’t fault the staff at all. Friendly and attentive. The quality was mediocre.
Not a place I’ll go to again.
Sorry Ego. It’s just not the same at all.
Don't waste your money!
A party of 11 went to Ego in Cannock to celebrate my daughter's 40th birthday. A table had been pre booked for 17.30. On arrival we dutifully waited to check in. We were totally ignored for quite some time. Once seated we were informed that the beef had run out and there were no alcohol free drinks left either. One of the drivers in our group asked for tap water which didn't arrive and had to be asked for again. The waiter stood at one end of the table to take all the orders so we couldn't hear him and he couldn't hear us. It was suggested to him that he move down the table to take the orders
The plate from the only person to have a starter had been cleared and there was no sign of our main courses. It was over 1½hrs since we had arrived by now. We asked where our food was and the waitress went to check. She returned to say our order had been moved up to 2nd, from what I don't know but it was hardly busy
We had 4 very hungry, bored children with us who were getting very restless. The food eventually came out little by little. The gluten free meal was given to the wrong person. Another meal had not been cooked at all. Not all the desserts had been noted correctly so they had to be double checked again. Needless to say, a word was had with the manager and we will not be dining at Ego Cannock again. Not the special birthday meal we wanted.
Really disappointing experience at Ego
Really disappointing experience at Ego. After being seated, we waited around 20 minutes before anyone even came to take a drinks order. In the end, we gave up and went to the bar ourselves just to get served. The wait for food was also far too long, with no explanation or apology. Ironically, the only thing that was quick was the bill — which arrived within 2 minutes when we’d had enough. Poor service overall and not what you’d expect.
Great
Hi, me and my partner came for a meal last week and got served by Brodie, food was fantastic and service was great, we will be returning and bringing friends with us next time! Thankyou!
I have never felt so uncomfortable
I have never felt so uncomfortable and rushed having a meal. We took my parents out for a meal prior to a cancer operation and as Ego was so busy, as soon as we sat down, we were told to order quickly as the kitchen was extremely busy and there was at all east a 40 minute wait on food. We were ten reminder, even if the food was late coming out, we will still only have the table for 1.5 hours. We were asked to leave our table at exactly 1.5 hours later and I was still eating! My meal was boxed up and we were asked to leave our table. Meg was extremely rude and argumentative. I certainly will not be returning to our local restaurant. Very disappointed and sad.
Don't Go!
Very long wait (only 3 tables in there) food was overcooked/reheated and tasteless and overpriced for the quality.
Food is Lush Decor is Plush

Gift Vouchers
Gift Vouchers. Recently bought a gift voucher as a gift. By chance while checking my bank I found a £1.20 cash advance fee with no info attached to it. On speaking with my bank they inform me it’s related to the Ego voucher along with a further £0.26 in interest. They refunded this and did say that Ego don’t receive this fee it goes to the bank but it’s as a result of how Mitchells and Butlers have set themselves up. As I have had it explained, it would appear, it’s the transaction fee or part of it being passed to the customer. I’ve looked at their website T&Cs I don’t see any mention of the fee and I’ve spoken with their call centre who appear to have a set script for this to read from,as they tell me I’m not the first to question this, the main thrust of it being “it’s the bank not us”. The point being, whoever it is, it’s my money being taken, in my view, without me being informed.
It’s the principle rather than the amount but be aware. I would say in closing we are, or were, frequent customers of EGO at Wyke and have always found the food, staff and general experience to be good and the one star is for the vouchers. I’d rate them as four stars.
My family and I
My family and I - six of us, went to The Star at Kingsclere for Sunday lunch. The place has been renovated and is lovely. The decor is welcoming and It was very Christmasy. Staff were excellent and very helpful as one of our group has allergies and there were also two children. All the lunches were excellent but particularly the lamb off the festive menu which my son and I had - It was cooked to perfection. I will definitely be back and will be telling my friends
Poor food and service
Went 13th December . Service soooo slow and portions from Christmas 3 course meal so small. Turkey so dry and was told they would bring me another turkey lunch but it would be the same as turkey was a dry meat. Opted for fish instead which came so long after all our party had finished their food. We have always loved Ego but will not be going back.
Amazing staff Shadwell Leeds wellington ego
A particular member of staff, I found out she was called Charlie could see I wasn't very well whilst out with my partner this evening, she came over with some lemon and hot water for me to try and asked if there was anything else she could do. She went above and beyond for me without me even asking.
All staff go out of their way to help.
I would recommend to anyone.
Very small portions overpriced food
This is a honest review we don’t normally bother but for a new restaurant NOT GOOD
We arrived on Friday night for my daughter birthday. The whole building was absolutely freezing, the radiators were on but even the staff were cold
Service on welcome is slow.
The food very expensive for what you get all fancy delivery of my mixed kebab mostly chorizo . The smallest pieces of meat we have ever seen, I honestly have had bigger starters. And that was £25 with a ridiculous salad. The bread on nam was so dry I didn’t eat it. 2 x. paella again not much more than a starter .
We booked a table for 5 for a W.I lunch.
