Gorgeous weather…

I love runforall😊. I participated many times, and I totally understand it must be a logistical nightmare, but today wasn’t the best of experiences.
Why did we have a water stop so early, just under 1 mile, and then nothing until we ran past the 7k point? It was sweltering!
Also when I went to collect my pre purchased t shirt there wasn’t any!! All gone, not even a bag with a medal in, although I did have two mars bars and crisps in the one I did get, although I eventually got a medal after queuing again in the non purchased t shirt line.
How disappointing, maybe I should have run faster than 60 minutes and I may have got one.
The problem was there was no one checking the names of who’d paid for a t shirt, therefore anyone could have walked up a taken one.
I felt so sorry the the very young army cadet who was getting flak from runners who were disappointed, of which there was very many.
It’s not that I’m looking for a refund, and if you can’t send me a t shirt that I paid for then I would prefer that you donate the cost of another
t shirt to one of your given charities.
I hope someone finds the time and energy to reply to this😊

Leeds Marathon

Great cause , great course , great spectators . Dreadful organisation. Long q’s to get into the stadium, little or no signage . Once into the stadium there were long q’s for the toilets that blocked the passageways . No staff directing these q’s or directing desperate runners to the other side of the stadium where the toilets were empty.

A melee of people searching for where they needed to go to drop their bags, find the start line. The long disorganised queue for the bag drop was huge .

Eventually bag drop collected it was a rush to search for the start pens to discover the start was delayed 15 minutes

Collecting the bag post event. I cannot recall a bigger **** show . A scrum of hot dehydrated exhausted runners 7/8 deep, 20 metres across cramed into a building trying to retrieve their bags from a bunch of disorganised children. Not a single adult managing/helping them . This wasn’t just very bad, it was dangerous I nearly fainted, I imagine others did. It was fortunate all the runners were doing there very best to remain good humoured .

In the 100 + events in which I have participated this is the most disorganised , poorly managed under staffed event I have attended . A great shame .

The actual race itself was excellent. The course was hard but enjoyable and the atmosphere was amazing. I am planning on doing it again next year! It was let down however by the organisation at the start. No signs for bag drop or toilets or even how to get to the actual start! Needs more signs, marshals and barriers organising the queues. The plumbing in the stadium also seemed to be struggling with demand….

Beautiful route, poor organisation.

Upsides: The route was beautiful and a mix between streets lined with big crowds and quiet countryside with great views and the sound of birds overhead. I loved the atmosphere and enjoyed the downhills that came with the uphills. The finish in the stadium felt special.

Downsides- There were not enough portaloos at the stations en route.

The biggest downside was the organisation at the stadium. The bag drop had big queues in the morning and was very poorly signposted.

At the end of the marathon I spent a long time looking for the bag drop as there were no signposts. The email beforehand said the bag drop is 'under the cricket nets' but this doesn't help when you don't know the stadium or what a cricket net is. When I found the bag drop there was 30min+ queues and some runners' bags were missing. It was very hot inside the bag drop, some people were taken ill whilst waiting in the crush to collect the bags.

It would be better if different waves had different bag drops, and if there was much better signposting inside the stadium. The stadium is not big enough for thousands of people to queue for one room to drop their bag.

Toilet queues were very very long at the stadium.

I also don't know why all the runners received an email the day before the marathon with a 'gentle reminder' that all bags must be A4 size or smaller. Despite reassurance been given on social media that a standard back pack would be fine, no further official email was sent out so presumably this will have caused a lot of worry for people who don't use social media and didn't see the reassurances. Whilst the bag size is a rule at the stadium, of course it is not possible or safe for all runners to avoid bringing a bigger bag with items such as drinks, snacks and clean clothes for after the marathon.

I'm not writing this review to put people off the marathon. I loved the route and would run this marathon again. But I hope Run for All will read these reviews and act on them. Run for All are a well established company, I was surprised that some of the logistics such as bag drop, signposting in the stadium and Comms. were so poor.

Amazing day but need to fix things for next year.

On the one hand, best day of my life at the Rob Burrow Leeds marathon. The route, spectators and more than anything community spirit was amazing and something they should all be proud of.
However, organisation at the start was so bad that it was dangerous. I was packed into the under stadium for 40 minutes along with 1000s of other runners. I have photos. We missed the start because of this and therefore all the build up with Kev and Rob. I was gutted. It also meant I started super late as was in the last wave.
Need more motivators and health and safety people on route around church lane / eccup lane. Had someone passed out there there wasn’t anyone to help for 3 miles. Also they ran out of electrolytes on the hottest day, and after mile 22 it felt like there were no water stations anywhere to be seen.
After at the stadium I just left my bag as had friends who wanted to celebrate with me and the queue was terrible again, would have been another 30 mins. Doesn’t take the shine away from the day but they really really need to sort out the beginning. One lady had a panic attack coz it was so packed, I bet she couldn’t do her marathon after all that training! I’d be heartbroken.

Leeds Marathon

While I have to say the course and the support from the spectators was wonderful, this was completely overshadowed by the absolute sham of the official organisation.
From the moment of entering the stadium the farse began, no signage, no information, no one to help. Just hundreds of runners wondering where they needed to go, to drop their bags, find the start line, go for that last toilet trip, warm up, calm nerves.
Toilet queues were near on an hour for male and females, the queue for the bag drop was in excess of half an hour (once you found the back of it!). Bags were just added to an ever increasing pile in a room far too small for this use, but we’ll come back to that.
As I say my run was amazing apart from the notable number of runners, some sections were far too busy, runners had not been spaced out adequately.
I was lucky, at the first electrolyte stop I managed to grab one, the next two electrolyte stops had none, “where are the electrolytes” I asked, “we’ve run out” came the reply. I would have been in the first half of runners passing through, for them to have runout at this point is inexcusable, to run out at all to be honest is just not on, it was a hot day and I’m sure many runners really suffered from the lack of salts and hydration.
At the end of running a marathon, you can need help to even think straight, but again trying to even find where to pick up your bag was incredibly hard, again no signage. On asking other bemused runners, and eventually finding the back of the queue, the wait began, eventually getting to the point where you’d dropped off your bag, to find a scene that resembled a pub bar on a Friday night, 6 to 8 people deep, absolute chaos, several runners around me were looking as if they pass out at any moment, it really was socking.
I’d love to have done this marathon again, but even at the bargain come again price of £21 (another mistake, later correct with another email) I wouldn’t. I’m not forgetting all the money that this event has raised, but the venue does not work for an event of this nature and the organization was diabolical, a real shame.

Great course, amazing support and I am glad a took part!
The pre and post race organisation, on the other hand, wasn't great. We were filed into the stadium and it took almost an hour to drop-off bags. The signage was poor and everyone was quite confused about what was happening. Had any emergency evac been needed in this situation, it would have been very dangerous, given how congested it was.
Post race collection wasn't well thought out either - sending everyone around the long way then turning back on themselves to get to their bags.
Hopefully these issues are rectified if the race goes ahead next year. Headingley is a great location, but it would need better planning to deliver on this promise.

Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon

Wow! What an experience! The atmosphere and spectator support was far greater than expected. A great route with lots of varying scenery. Probably my toughest run to date as the heat did not help. It was amazing to participate in this first event and one I will never forget. A great cause that is very close to my heart so emotions were high.

However! Sadly I was deflated before I had even started due to the pure dis-organisation by run for all. Two hours of queuing to get in and bag drop meant that all the build up, motivators etc was missed. There will have been a lot of lessons learned and issues addressed if this is to remain a success.
Suggestions for next year:
Eventeers to be visibly present, providing updates and motivation outside the stadium while queuing to get in.
Large, visible signs outside and inside the stadium to make it very clear regarding bag searching and bag drops. Different access routes for those without the need for bag drops.
Bag drops need to be quicker- maybe have wave drop off times and in two areas.
Clear visible map directions on how to get to park and rides and strides.
No last minute emails eg informing runners re small bags only! A lot of people have travelled a couple of days before the event.
Finishers bag to be relevant to the event- not the yorkshire marathon!
More aid, water and motivators on the hills. It was distressing to see runners passed out on the side of the road. Those runners in the later waves were very poorly supported in these areas especially on the Chevin.
Spectator ticket allocation. What a shame to see so few spectators in the stadium for those returning in the later hours and were unable to get spectator tickets for their family. So maybe there needs to be allocated tickets per runner plus extras .

Runner safety and logistics not considered

So it’s amazing that so much money was raised and the support was incredible out on the course (5 stars) but in order to improve it’s important to face into some of the challenges faced by the runners

1. Pre race I attended the Marshall briefing with a relative who volunteered, it’s was inept. No mention of runner safety, action of there was an incident & no water/food provided for the +9 hours of volunteering ahead

2. In stadium the fact there were so few toilets was ridiculous, you simply couldn’t go to the loo pre the race. No wonder it was delayed

3. Bag drop chaos. I nearly missed the start as I was waiting so long. Surely someone thought 12,000 runners going through a single file queue would be an issue??

4. No space to warm up pre race, cramped and chaotic sums it up

5. I was running 3 hours and at c.22 miles I ran into thousands of runners doing the half marathon, again choas! I couldn’t get past, there were water bottles everywhere and they had no idea marathon runners were trying to get past.

Then there is the course. I know how hard it is to close roads and just hope everyone got home safely, it was clear some runners struggled

Talking of chaos and unorganisation; after the race they sent an eMail out stating next year “was open” being run on 8th May for £21……obviously both of these facts were wrong!!

Overall whilst the fundraising was incredible, and crowds great, it was unorganised & quite clear runners weren’t top priority

Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon 2023

Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon 2023
The spectators were outstanding, the course challenging and the weather hot. Unfortunately my experience was marred by the extremely poor organisation at start and finish. Park and stride was supposed to be 15 minutes walk, it took 45 minutes to get the last 300m through the stadium gate to join a mass of packed runners trying to find the bag drop, toilets or any directions from the organisers. Where were the stadium marshals or even some signage. It was too claustrophobic to be penned up when you are trying to compose yourself for the run. On the course the crowds were great, the marshals did well, most aid stations provided what was needed but to have the last 2 water stations run out on a hot day was inexcusable. Getting bags at the end was a nightmare for those of us who sustained injuries, blisters and cramp when all you want is to get away and sort things out. The traffic leaving the area was gridlocked as there were no marshals to direct people around the road closures. All in all, it is the last event “organised” by Run for All that I will attend. They allowed too many entrants for the venue’s capacity.

Leeds Rob Burrows marathon

I really wanted this to be a great day , but sadly it wasn’t .
The race route and support were Fantastic however the organisation was woeful and inept.
The start area was chaotic with no signage , minimal staff to advise and huge queues for the baggage store resulting in the race starting late . The baggage store was overwhelmed and clearly had not enough staff and it seemed to be manned by children.
At the end of the race I went to collect my bag from inside the baggage hall and it was so crowded a lady asked for the tables to be pulled back to give us more room . They said they couldn’t . It was so hot and i was shoulder to shoulder with runners pressed against my chest and back and stood for such a long time that i passed out . I was helped by 3 other runners and the paramedics struggled to get to me as room was overcrowded
The paramedics were great .
After i got out the room I made my way to the bus area for the Park and ride.
Again the queues were huge , and the buses couldn’t get to the pick up points as the area was gridlocked with traffic .
Eventually the Police came to direct traffic
I ran the marathon in 4.26 and it took over 2.5 hours to get my bag and on the bus .
I truly believe Run for all oversold this event . Originally there was to be 7k runners , but over 12k ran this event
I can’t understand how the logistical side can be so poor - Its not like their first marathon .
Unfortunately I won’t be booking another RFA event .
Compared to how well organised Manchester marathon was , this looked like the Chuckle brothers did the logistics
Sorry and goodbye Run for All ….

Excellent

Really enjoyed taking part in the Sheffield 10km. It was a really good atmosphere and inclusive of everyone. Only downside was my size t-shirt at the end had gone there was no XL left which really shouldn't happen, but I got a large one so it's fine, and besides I didn't do it for a goody bag I did it for charity so if I'd gotten nothing I wouldn't have minded. So the goody bag at the end was great despite what these ruddy vegans keep saying. If they want raisins or a banana bring it in your bag and pick it up from the baggage store. All they ever do is complain 🙄

Incompetent discriminatory staff, organisation in Leeds gets worse year on year, avoid

Leeds half marathon today has surpassed itself in incompetence and rude stewards who have no clue where to send runners for numbers. We we’re stood on the headrow outside the art gallery but not knowing Leeds did not realise and were sent up past a church into a square where we were then told to go back to where we had been sent from. This was a steward who had no clue where he was or anything else.We then went up to the square where my blind 70 year old mother was denied entry as she was not a runner.I pointed out lots of people in there were obviously not runners but in there yet someone blind could stand outside.Great help not.Leeds is by far the worst organised run every year,in fact it gets worse year on year.Runforall just wants your money folks then you are on your own.Choose other runs and save yourself money, hassle and discrimination.

Read the T's and C's numerous times.

I wanted to defer my Leeds Half Marathon place until next year as I've had two very heavy falls recently and, due to an ankle injury, sore knees and cracked bone in my elbow am unable to run. Run For All agreed to defer my place until next year but then said I'd have to pay for next years event "as per their terms and conditions" and no refund available. I would suggest that their wording is misleading - in my opinion paying again is just a new entry and not a deferred place. Their Ts & Cs also suggest you can't run if you're not medically fit so surely offering a discount on next years race would surely not be too much trouble.

I love running and the Leeds Half was one of my favourites, it is very well organised but I shan't enter anymore of their races. Luckily there are still some great, cheaper less corporate led races available. I don't usually leave bad reviews I just feel so strongly about this.

Anti-runner and unreasonable T&C's

As per previous reviews, terrible attitude towards their customers. Caught Covid a week before their recent Derby half marathon, made what I thought was a reasonable request to defer it until next year. No, only way they'd defer it was if I paid again. That's not a deferral, that's another entry!

They refused to enter into discussion on the issue, just referred to their T&C's, which are lamentably anti-consumer. I then cancelled entry into a race next year, and even with 6 months notice they only gave me 30% refunded! Yes, again with a 'check the T&Cs' comment.

But what really annoyed me was every email they sent telling me to basically 'get stuffed' was ended with a passive-aggressive 'wishing you all the best' comment. I will never run an event of theirs again and will never miss an opportunity to pass this tale on.

Awful customer service

Promoted and continued to take payments for an event right up until the day they cancelled it. Surely they had an idea it wouldn’t be going ahead and should have paused entries? A few weeks after cancelling, rescheduled for a date I couldn’t do and wouldn’t have signed up for.

Flat out refusing a refund or even moving to next year. “You can defer your place to next year bur will need to pay your entry fee again.”

Can’t make a date you didn’t sign up for? Tough.

Laughable.

Other organisations of such events have been much more accommodating this year, use them.
