Missing book no refund
Ordered a three month subscription and the third book never came, followed up several times and was told it was due to the company closing down due to insolvency and I wouldnt therefore be able to get a refund. Lo and behold they are still in business months later!
Scammers
Would give no stars if that was an option. They had my first review removed, which was ironic given that they were monitoring trust pilot and quick to remove negative reviews, yet I didn't receive any email responses for months at a time!
Leaving this review now as I have started to get emails promoting Aphra events in the last few weeks and I am sickened that they did not fulfill orders when they were 'books that matter' but just set up under a new name and neglected to honor orders from paying customers.
I find this behaviour to be entirely unethical and I know I am not the only person this happened to. Avoid ordering from this company as they will likely accept your payment and then not fulfill your order, leave months between email communications and have negative comments/reviews removed to hide their shady business ethics.
Absolutely awful
Absolutely awful, worst customer service ever experienced. They didn’t send me an order from April 2023 when they were books that matter and have ignored so many of my emails that they have now gone into liquidation and think that’s an acceptable resolution. They are still ignoring the DMs and emails I send every day!!
Awful
Awful. Messaged every week since last August and still not received product or refund promised. My next stop is small claims court sadly.
SCAM COMPANY
SCAM COMPANY! Books that Matter/Aphra is a complete and utter scam. We are a small family run business and the way they have treated us and other small companies is so bad. Unpaid invoices are ignored by Molly, who seems to care more about posting on social media. How they have nerve to keep posting is beyond me.
We have sent countless emails, letters, messages and get given false hope and promises that are never followed through. It is so upsetting that companies like Aphra can get away with this.
Do not trust this company!
SCAM AND DECEITFUL COMPANY
Aphra Book Club have not paid us for goods we delivered last summer, they have also done the same thing to many other suppliers who we have corresponded with.
They have also taken dozens (if not hundreds) of customer's money, and then not supplied them with any products. We would strongly advise not giving them your money, as you will most likely lose it. We recommend to stay well away from this company.
Terrible
They have a good company front, and appear to support good movements inclusivity etc. It's a shame that they are complete scammers, paid £20 for books back in May 2023 and never received anything. They then said they would send me another book, got nothing, then said they would refund me but never responded. Avoid at all costs - no point supporting such a place, they have now opened up a bookshop presumably with the profits made from not fulfilling orders.
Scammers
Ordered a subscription plus two £5 books. Received 1 book subscription and then the subscription was cancelled but I had never received the 2 £5 books and never received a refund. Paid for the last subscription and chose my book but never received it. Emailed multiples times to no response yet have opened a book shop in Bristol and claim to have responded to everyone on socials. Avoid at all costs.
Taken money with nothing received
After trying for many months to get my refund - I can’t help but feel very disappointed in this company. I haven’t made any comments on their social media pages as I’m very wary of the damage it can cause to a small business. However, after endless emails (on my behalf) and two responses promising to give back my money for items I never received - it has been 8 months and I still haven’t received anything.
I work very hard for my money, as anyone else does. Had there been more communication and a timeline of when this could be expected, it would be a different story. Instead, the company has rebranded and bought a new bookshop before settling the issues with their old company.
This is very disheartening, and I’m sure I’ll receive the same generic “apology” response that everyone else is getting on trust pilot - and then ignored further instead of getting a refund.
I’d just like to reiterate that this review is a last resort in getting my money back, 8 months down the line. I’d also like this review to be a caution for other people before ordering.
DO NOT BUY
DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY!! In the likely event that your order is mysteriously lost, they are literally impossible to contact. They do not respond to emails, comments or DMs. They constantly try to deflect blame and use their status as a small business to avoid criticism. All their responses to negative reviews contain the same line - "Should you wish to discuss your concerns further, please contact [email address]". But what's the point in emailing you when they don't reply? Some of us have been emailing constantly for months and months with no response. The fact that they're supposedly struggling through 'thousands' of emails suggests the extent of this problem and highlights just how many people they've scammed out of money. Even if you buy direct from their bookshop, you're still supporting a truly unethical company that uses the guise of feminism and queer ownership to mess people about.
Beautiful bookshop and great selection of books!
The bookshop is beautiful! They have very great selection of books and very friendly staff! A really good place to go if you like queer and feminist books and supporting independent bookshops.
Disappointing
I’m so sad to be leaving a review like this. I received a books that matter (the previous incarnation of aphra) subscription back in 2020 and it really got me through 6 months of lockdown. I bought a subscription as a gift for my sister too. Then I had massive delays with an order and I thought it was a one off. Then I placed an order in August and by late October, with the exception of one email from them, I kept being ignored by the company when I asked where was my order, where was my money and where was the credit they said I would receive? Eventually had to go through my bank’s dispute resolution process for goods not received. And yet they seem to be putting lots of effort into the rebrand, ignoring and isolating existing loyal customers. Well you have definitely lost a fan here.

Shocking
Shocking. A scam. Still waiting a refund nearly a year later. Countless emails unanswered.

If there was a zero star…
Took my money for a subscription. Never ever received a thing. Posts on social media all the time and ignores customers. Sadly I’m not the only one. Shameful.

6 MONTHS ON, still waiting while they have a store with my missing books
Writing another review to let people know that I am STILL chasing for my refund - since July.
And now my November box (the last one before they closed the subscription) never turned up. I've spoken to a few people on Instagram who also have not received their November box - at this point I don't think it ever went out.
So I am now chasing for that refund as they have not provided me with any updates and I am once again without a product.
If you are waiting for a refund, keep chasing them. It is despicable that the founder, Molly Masters thinks she can treat people like this while running a brick-and-mortar store in bristol.
Deleting comments of people asking for help, reeks of a very bad taste -
Aphra/Molly - you owe me a refund. Refund your customers, it is that simple.

Respuesta de aphra
Avoid, in all forms
ordered in August 2023, no order received - emailed, dm'd on IG and promised both order and refund.
Now there are no replies, no email to contact on the website and critical comments are being ignored and hidden on instagram.
Recommend to all unhappy customers to contact CAB, get a case reference and a letter template to pursue ADR. And contact your credit card provider, if you haven't already.
Horrendous in every way
Rebranded from Books That Matter to Aphra and honestly that feels like part of a scam to keep avoiding customers queries. Like many many others I ordered something in August 2023 and we are now in December with no completed order, several ignored emails, multiple ignored social media comments - they will never reply they will never fulfill the order or supply a refund. Terrible service masquerading under the guise of feminism and supporting a small female business - no they are awful and give other small businesses a bad name.

Just don't purchase from this company
Just don't purchase from this company, you might think you will be different but you won't. You will join all the others who have had their money taken and not received the book, subscription, or tote. Don't get fooled by their Instagram, they delete comments.
There is zero communication at all, I have run out of ways to be able to try and get in contact with them. I have now raised the dispute with both my bank and trading standards. I consider myself lucky that I have only spent £15.00, but that is still money that has been wasted with nothing to show for it.
Their whole ethos is to support women, and yet this is the one company I have dealt with where I feel disrespected and ignored.

Respuesta de aphra
Do not waste your money
I started using Books That Matter in 2020 and was always so happy with the service but then August the 14th 2023 I ordered books and a mystery tote from them and its been 15 weeks and nothing.
I have e-mailed roughly 7 times and had 1 reply to begin with saying they will be shipped in around 3 weeks but since then no reply at all to my messages. They were quick enough to take my money but now they haven’t even got the decency to reply to my e-mails when they aren’t delivering the product.
I am so disappointed because I was so supportive of this company and this is how they treat their loyal customers.
They have since rebranded (Aphra Book Club) and by the looks of the comments here alienated a lot of their previous customers by doing the same thing. Taking the money and delivering nothing
