Order Not Received and No Response

Placed an order in August. Was told it would take a while to be received but by early October I was worried. So I sent an email and received a quick response to say they would send me an October box and credit my account. This still hasn't happened despite chasing twice. At this point, I'd just be happy with a refund.
I would strongly recommend against buying from this company. I'm really disappointed and after reading other reviews on this page, other people have had similar issues.
It seems so against their whole ethos and disappointing since they apparently want to support female writers, but only seem to rip off their largely (female) customer base.

Dear Gemma, thank you for taking the time to share your concerns with us and we send a heartfelt apology for the time it has taken for us to get back to you, rectify our actions, and for the frustration caused. As a very small team of two people, we have been working tirelessly to finalise the closure of our Books That Matter subscriptions since September. The process of issuing refunds and replacements to those affected has been more time-consuming than anticipated, and we deeply regret any confusion or upset it has caused. We have been working our way through thousands of customer queries and refunds, and have been carefully attending to these to ensure no customer or small business is affected by our subscription closure.

Due to losing money and stock to previous fulfillment centres, Books that Matter had to close the subscription business. Please know that though it is taking us time to work through all the refunds from the closure of Book that Matter, your case is important to us. If you have not yet received your refund, then please contact us so that we can check the refund status on our system and arrange a refund asap if eligible. Should you wish to discuss your concerns further, please contact support@aphrabookclub.com. Although it is a frequent and lawful practice for limited companies with debts to cease operations and initiate anew, Aphra Books is committed to ensuring that any compensation owed by Books that Matter is returned to subscription customers and other small suppliers, but as a small team alongside trying to get back on our feet, it has taken us longer than anticipated.

Going forward, our sister brand, Aphra Books will continue to serve our community with events, book clubs and our bookshop and we hope we will be able to win back your good faith and have you as part of our next chapter.
Yours, team Aphra x

Scam operation

A company that claims to support and give a voice to women ripping off female customers and suppliers left, right and centre, yay! I honestly don’t know how this company is still legally operating. And no, we’re not fooled by your rebrand. I’ve ordered two sets of books this year I’ve never seen, and await a refund of £48.50 for books, and then promised replacement substitutes, that have never been delivered. Seven months this has been rolling on. I was kind and patient for months but this is despicable and I won’t be letting it rest. Please take your money to an independent bookshop that actually cares about its customers.

If I could give 0 stars I would

If I could give 0 stars I would. Rebranded from books that matter. Purchased books back in April and received no goods after trying to update the address. Passed the buck to Hermes you passed me back to them. Rubbish and slow emails for response. Had my money and I’ve had no books.

Not Paying

Very upsetting, we are a supplier for Aphra book club/Books that matter and did their printing. We had a good relationship with them, always rushed orders through for them and did everything we could to help - and now they are just not paying our invoices for goods they already have. How can a company have such poor morals, and do things like this to small companies. It is a really awful way to treat people. As a small company their selves they know how hard it is, to knock other suppliers for money when they have the goods is shocking behaviour.

Do not buy from this company

Do not buy from this company, it is the rebranded Books That Matter and they are just as bad at getting orders out despite all their claims of improvement.
Save your time, money and energy and place an order elsewhere.
I am still waiting for a refund which was meant to be actioned a month ago after waiting 2 months for my order to turn up.

Do NOT buy anything from them

I have been waiting for my books since June, since then I have e-mailed multiple times only to be ignored. After chasing and chasing they finally wrote back and said they would add credit to my account and send a new box to make up for it. This never materialised. From reading reviews and comments I can see loads of people are on the same boat: promised credit and replacements which never came. The owner and the staff pretend everything is fine on social media, posting about their new shop as if it's business as usual. Molly and staff: you need to stop with the lies, you need to be transparent and honest, you need to make a social media post where you own up to your mistakes and explain to your customers what the hell is happening. Stop making posts on social media pretending everything is great, stop promising your customers resolutions you will never act upon. Stop making excuses and saying the problem is the cost of living crisis. Yes, there is a cost of.living crisis and yes I believe your business has suffered greatly due to it but while the cost of living crisis may explain why you are struggling it doesn't explain nor does it justify the lack of respect you have shown your customers. Stop blaming your past fulfillment partners, they aren't responsible for how you've treated your customers through this whole ordeal nor do your customers have to pay for the issues you have had with them. People would respect you more if you were upfront and honest. Owing money to a lot of people that you keep ignoring (and whose social media comments you keep hiding and deleting) while you brag about opening a shop on social media is just wrong and offensive. I used to love Books That Matter but your behaviour has been absolutely shocking. I'm reporting you to Trading Standards.

Never received anything!

I ordered in August (with Books that Matter that has now rebranded as Aphra) and was told it would be 3-4 weeks to dispatch … a bit odd but ok. 4 weeks and no dispatch email, took over a week for them to send me a general response to my email querying where my order was. When I did get responses to my emails/DM’s they kept promising my order would be sent ‘next week’. I actually feel like it’s a scam and hope you forget about your order and they just keep your money. After about 8 weeks I sent them an email saying dispatch my order or give me a refund. I didn’t get either within the week so I opened a dispute with PayPal and I got my refund through the PayPal resolution centre.
I wanted to really like this company and support them but just feel scammed. I was relieved I had paid by PayPal.

I have tried to cancel my book subscription 4 times over the last 4 months and they are still taking money, holding my bank details on file which is a massive breach of GDPR.

They are not responding to emails, taking down comments on their Instagram from
Unhappy customers. Awful company.

Do not recommend !

SCAM - they take money and disappear

I was gifted a 6-month subscription and only received half the owed books. I have emailed them, DMd them, commented on several posts and have received no reply.

They keep blaming circumstances outside their control but to me taking somebody’s money and not provide them with goods is a scam. They should be reported.

EDIT - they’ve now started to delete messages on social media by unhappy customers. Literally zero morals. They have now opened a bookshop in Bristol - I am appalled that they were even allowed to open a new business.

Non-existent Customer Service

Ordered a book tote & hardback book around mid-august. Still yet to receive anything. I’ve sent emails chasing and I’ve had 1 generic response that was clearly copied & pasted. Tried contacting them on Instagram as well where they seem to be very active posting about new books they want people to buy (shipping this week apparently!? Good luck with that!) and I just received an automated reply. People who’ve ordered months ago are being ignored. Absolutely non-existent customer service and a woeful way to run a business. I’m going to try and claim my money back like other people have suggested on here. My advice is do not buy from them! It’s very sad as I loved the ethos of their business but I cannot support a business that clearly doesn’t care about its customers.

Ordered two books and a mystery tote on…

Ordered two books and a mystery tote on 12th of August. Still yet to receive. They delete Instagram comments asking for their orders and continue to post on social media advertising their goods and their new book shop.

They should focus on fulfilling current orders.

I can see why they have rebranded.

EDIT - 18 January - I still have NOT received my refund despite being told four times now that it is on the way. It's also suspicious their only five star review is by Iris, who posts on their socials all the time (an employee).

Avoid

Signed up to this in December 2022, paid for a year upfront, I think I have received 1 book on time in that period, there were months where they didn’t arrive and I’ve honestly now lost track if I have received everything I was meant to. I have had to get in touch with them constantly to chase missing orders and honestly I am so bored of it. After months of the books not arriving they offered me either 20% off their bookshop or 10% refund, I chose the 10% because this company isn’t getting any more of my money ever again. I have been chasing this refund for 2 months now and I’m just ignored by their customer service team. Ignoring customers and not delivering the service is making me feel so powerless.

I bought this subscription as a treat, and it has been so disappointing, I can’t wait for it to be over so I never have to deal with this company again. For a company set up on the idea of books that matter, they treat their customers appallingly, I’ve never had such poor service from anything before.

They’ve had a rebrand recently to Aprah books in what I assume is an attempt to distance themselves from the appalling reputation.

AVOID!

New name, same issues

I really did try to give this company every opportunity to respond to me but they didn’t. I was gifted a subscription in July and still have not had this actioned by them. I emailed them several times and messaged them on Instagram too. The weird thing is they actually did reply saying they would sort it, but never did. It’s a shame it’s a new name but same issues.

Don’t buy anything from this company! I ordered a tote bag/mystery book package on August 12th. 8 weeks later, still nothing; no response to e-mails or asking for information on their Instagram account. They are still trying to sell books on Instagram and even have the cheek to post about opening a bookshop but completely ignore queries about missing orders. Shameful.

Dear Judith, thank you for taking the time to share your concerns with us and we send a heartfelt apology for the time it has taken for us to get back to you, rectify our actions, and for the frustration caused.

Worst experience I've ever had with a…

Worst experience I've ever had with a company. Paid over 200 pounds altogether over the course of many months for a book subscription and never received anything! Aphra repeatedly blame their fulfilment service for these issues on their social media, however the issue for me is the abject lack of customer service. I first emailed them in July 2023 about this and have sent many emails over the course of months regarding a refund - it is now October (!) and I have not received a single response. So incredibly disappointing, particularly given the ethos of their company is one I was so happy to support. Would advise anyone to steer clear and avoid this company at all costs.

Books late/never arrive with no refunds issued.

Whilst I was subscribed to them under the name ‘Books that Matter,’ they struggled to deliver boxes on time most months. This didn’t stop them from advertising their next box though! I found myself emailing customer support every time to get a progress update on where it was.

However, the WORST thing about this company is that I ordered two books from them whilst they were doing a deal on past boxes and they never arrived!! I emailed them about this and never received a reply. However, I emailed them about where a box was (because of course it was running late) and got a reply almost instantly. When I replied to this email inquiring about my two books.. ghosted of course. A few months later they offered a small refund to their customers who were experiencing this issue but of course I have never received this either.

Thought I was subscribing for a good cause and supporting authors who were writing about important issues. You should probably just avoid them and listen to literally every other review on this page if you don’t want to get ripped off.

Beware

Beware I haven’t received any books for 4 months now. I paid for a 12 month’s subscription never again. I have contacted them delayed response about packing problems they promised the books would be delivered next week’- that was three weeks ago! Don’t waste your money.

I have now received the reply below from Aphra books. I do not intent to change my rating. while having received an email stating I am going to receive a £30 refund I am yet to receive ii, 🤞🏽 it arrives soon. However I purchased a 12 month subscription at £198 plus £42 p&p and have received only 6 months worth of books. I will let you do the math. I do appreciate it is difficult for small businesses, At the end of the day I purchased something that failed to be delivered.

Please don't waste your money

Please don't waste your money! Absolute joke of a company.
They are struggling to deliver orders made months ago but are continuously advertising new boxes & live events... After many emails and Instagram messages I finally received my money back from my bank - I would advise others to do the same. Contact your banks as you'll never get any refunds from this company...

No delivery and no communication

I ordered a tote bag and books on 13 August with an estimated delivery time of ‘3-4 weeks max’. After seven weeks, no update on my order, and no response to my emails I have given up and claimed the money back from my bank via a visa dispute.

Unfortunately, this company will take your money and fail to deliver the product. They recently re-branded from Books That Matter to Aphra Book Club, and are deleting any negative comments on their social media from unhappy customers. Awful experience. Please avoid.
