Jack's has lost it's magic, disappointed

Review for Jack's Magic compost.
For many years I have bought this compost.
What has happened this year? 😭 It is horrible! Must be a new mix, but I hate it.
The top of pots dry out and form a hard crust and all my plants and seeds are nowhere near as good as before with the old formulation. It has a very woody texture ..no good for smaller seeds which struggle. If you are going to change the mix then don't call it by the same name ( unless it's 'Jack's lost it's magic..)
I won't be buying it anymore....apart from if it's half price and I can use as mulch.Really disappointed.
***Regarding the reply response below..my review says it all... You have not confirmed that the mix has been changed..which it has !

5-Star Customer Support

Having mislaid/lost the rose on my K&S Long Reach Watering Can, I tried to purchase a replacement in various gardens centres, Amazon and other online retailers, all to no avail. With nothing to lose, I emailed Westland Horticulture direct, not really expecting any joy but worth a try I thought. Well I hit the jackpot! I received a very prompt reply from Kayleigh, Customer Service Manager, and much to my surprise and delight she was able to source a replacement rose which is now on its way to me. Sincere thanks go to Kayleigh and Westland for fantastic five star customer support.

Excessively Malleable Digging Fork

I have strong reservations about the quality of my Kent and Stowe digging fork. The tines bent much too easily. However, after sending photographic evidence, customer service quickly replaced the fork. I am very grateful for this.

The new Jack's Magic: brilliant quality, fantastic new packaging, and great value this year!

I’ve been using Jack’s Magic for years and I genuinely think the 2025 version is one of the best yet. I saw the new packaging and expected it to be another shrinkflation trick, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it’s actually better value than before!

This year’s bags are 40L instead of 50L, and honestly, I’m thrilled about the change. The lighter weight makes them so much easier to carry, especially when loading/unloading or moving around the garden. It’s a massive win for anyone with a big garden or a dodgy back like me!

Even better: I did the math and the cost per litre is cheaper this year than it was with the 50L bags last year—so you’re getting more for your money.

As always, the compost quality is excellent—fluffy, rich, crumbly, and easy to work with. I’ve been topping off my raised beds with it and the structure is spot on for sowing and transplanting.

I honestly don’t understand the low Trustpilot score—I’ve had nothing but great experiences with this product, and generally with Westland products year after year. This year's version of jack's Magic is especially excellent value, great quality, and now even easier to handle than ever. Highly recommended!

Westland peat free potting compost…

Westland peat free potting compost DIABOLICAL! chunks of wood and some stones. Impossible to grow seeds in, glad I bought only one to try. Do not waste your money on this rubbish. Charlie, Cottingham.

I would like to assure you that all of our composts are screened and there should not be any large pieces of wood or stones within the mix. It sounds like there may have been a screening issue during production.

Westland Orchid Compost is Atrocious

I bought a bag of Westland Orchid Compost to repot my orchid. I was surprised to see that it was more like a compost than bark, and it appeared to have several different things in it.

A month after repotting, I pulled 3 seedlings out of the compost that had germinated below the surface (with orchids being planted in clear pots I was able to see them). Six weeks later and I appear to have what look like tiny eggs below the surface. I couldn't make out if it is indeed eggs or mould. Either way, this compost appears to have been contaminated during packaging or prior. Today I bought a proper bad of orchid bark that cost me double the price for half the amount and it is just that. Bark! You get what you pay for.

This orchid was given to me in August '23 by my Dad's carer when he passed away. It is of huge sentimental value to me and now I'm fighting to keep it alive. Thank you very much Westland.

I’ve been using Jacks magic for years

I’ve been using Jacks magic for years, it was my go to compost,I have a very large garden and use huge amounts of compost in my many containers. Frankly most compost these days is total rubbish, but Jacks Magic has now changed its formulation and joined the ranks of the rubbish. The cost is through the roof and the quality is abysmal, I’ve tried other Westland composts, if I want shredded wood, I’ll pop down to the local sawmill.

We are sorry to hear that you are unhappy with your purchase of our Jack's Magic Compost.

Here at Westland Horticulture we are working towards a peat free environment, we now have a new improved blend, enriched with BIO3, this makes it our most sustainable Jack's Magic yet.

The new formula does contain some West+ and a small amount of natural mineral. The West+ is our patented wood fibre peat replacement that improves aeration and drainage in the compost as well as making it easier to rewet the compost if it dries out.

Could I please ask that if you still have the packaging that you email customerservice@westland.com with an image of your compost along with the QA code from the bag and we'll happily look into this for you.

Westland Plastic

Bought Westland Topsoil for both my raised beds (thankfully only to bulk out the bottom) and also as part of a substrate mix for my tortoise. The soil is riddled with small scraps of what seems to be shredded plastic bags, but also small pieces of rigid plastic. This is highly dangerous for my tortoise but also not welcome in my garden. It sadly wasn’t an isolated case as the same was true for all 6 bags I bought. I won’t be buying from Westland again.

Don’t buy their Fat Balls

Very poor quality fat balls. Hardly any seeds. Almost as hard as concrete. A complete waste of money

Jack's Magic compost

I have bought Jack's Magic compost for several years and had no problems. Last year, 2024, they changed the formulation and I had very poor germination of small seeds, larger seeds - courgettes, germinated but could not pull the seed leaves out of the compost and ended up upside down with the roots in the air.
I will not be using this again.

Amazing customer service from Daniel

My Peckwith fatball holder (over 5 years old) had two tiny plugs which had perished.I emailed the company to enquire about replacements late Wednesday night and woke up the next morning to see a reply from Daniel saying my item was in the post!! It arrived this morning. Amazing service. They didn't charge me even the postage. Icannot understand the ratio of bad reviews on here. I can only assume that some people don't bother making a comment when they are happy with goods or service.

I bought a westland planting soil

I bought westland planting soil for vegetables. Thanks to that it has killed my wonderful plant that was healthy, l looked into the soil that was left to check and found to my shock!! That it has plastic, and painted wood (colour white) as if it came from a back garden gate or picket fence. I'm am furious as this plant l grew for 1 year... and it was very healthy before l used the westlands planting soil. Devastating, hurt, and angry!!! Check your bags and see if its full if rubbish before you use it!!

We chose this product as a replacement for an earlier excellent Gardman bird feeder. The new product arrived without instructions as to how to fit the feeding and water trays.
These were difficult as you have to use a 45 degree
angle to fit them to the pole. Furthermore it was found that neither the feed or water trays were removable for cleaning so that bird hygiene could be compromised. After Gardman were contacted they tell me a video is available to show how these are fitted but I pointed out that there are people who do not have internet access. Gardman have pretty much
ignored the point of the non removable feed and water trays. A complete waste of money and will
have to be discarded. Bad design and cheaply
made no doubt overseas. DO NOT BUY!!!

Unacceptable Refund Process and Lack of Accountability

I recently had an extremely disappointing experience with Westland. After making a payment through my business account, I requested a refund due to an issue with the product. Unfortunately, the refund was mistakenly sent to an account that doesn't belong to me, but to a former employee who had been terminated for unethical practices.
Despite my repeated requests for the refund to be processed to my original payment account, the company failed to address the issue correctly. This not only shows a lack of proper procedures but also raises serious concerns about their handling of sensitive customer information.
I provided them with the original payment receipt and all necessary details to correct the mistake, yet their response was inadequate. This has caused significant disruptions to my business, and their unwillingness to take immediate and appropriate action has left me with no choice but to consider legal action.
I had hoped for a strong partnership with westland, but this experience has shattered my trust. I strongly advise others to be cautious when dealing with them, especially regarding financial transactions.

I purchased the Flopro Hose and Cart…

I purchased the Flopro Hose and Cart System (30m) from Amazon as a gift for my father. The item, which costs over £120, is covered by a 3-year warranty. Unfortunately, after just 2.5 years, the handle snapped while my father was winding the hose.

Upon contacting Westland Horticulture, the owners of FloPro, I was informed that this issue is not covered under the warranty. They claimed that the hose cart system had been used incorrectly and suggested that the breakage was due to abuse and improper storage. They recommended that the product be stored indoors, which is unreasonable during the summer when my father uses it daily to water his plants.

ITEM HAS BEEN REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY - THANK YOU

Deters birds NOT!!!

Bought 2 boxes of fast growing lawn seed, specifically looked for the "deters birds" one. Put down on lawn, pigeons and magpies couldn't eat it quick enough! Took a picture and contacted Westland explaining I'd bought the "deter birds" seed and the birds had eaten it and it was expensive bird seed. Their response was " all birds will eat seed"
So don't waste your money, they are not interested. I've avoided since.

Than you for your review. All birds are attracted to seeds of any kind, but the seed that has the deterrent is covered with a salty blue coating that the birds will peck at but will not like.

Gardman birdfeeders

I bought two Gardman birdfeeders from Amazon. Hopefully with squirrel and Starling proof cages. First one arrived with incomplete parts, returned. Second one arrived, with 3 parts impossible to fit together, very poor manufacture and design. Also returned. Would love to know where these birdfeeders are made? Shall be looking elsewhere for my next bird feeder.

Quality Peckish

I see very bad reviews. My experience is quite the opposite, true, I was not buying compost which appears to be cxxp. I bought three Peckish nestboxes and the quality was excellent.
I searched Amazon first and those of a similar price were reported as being full of sharp edges and points,not so with Peckish. solid with good workmanship. Would not hesitate to buy again

Avoid

Avoid! Extremely poor quality products that do not match description and suitability. Compost sold as premium seed medium at horrendous price is so heavy it contains over 10mm stones, weed seeds and fly larvae.

Customer service is AI based sending you unrelated chains of wikipedia scam in reply, completely uninterested in investigating just to put you off, so unprofessional and childish.

After sending the sample to them they came back 2 weeks later saying the pH test came back just fine so nothing wrong on their side, absolutely ridiculous!

I will never spend another penny on their products!

Twice I have bought Gardman no grow…

Twice I have bought Gardman no grow seed. The first time the seed was mouldy, the second time it was infested with Indian Meal Moth which then spread larvae into my kitchen through the opened bag!! I thought the first purchase was just bad luck, but never again!
