Absolutely great- LOVE FRAME!
Absolutely great! LOVE the mat Pilates class now I can’t do reformer- only thing is I would love for there to be more/varying Pilates classes to choose from! Perhaps incorporating small weights and a Pilates ring? Thank you for doing this! x
Frame KX = My True Love
Frame KX is honestly my true love. I discovered it in the fall when I moved to London and was looking to get back into shape to balance out that postgrad student life. Frame fit the bill perfectly. It's a short walk from my flat AND more or less my uni. So I took one class and I was hooked! I currently probably take classes 5-7 days a week and I cannot get enough. The front of the house team is fab and I love walking in every morning and seeing their wonderful friendly faces. I'm obsessed with the Lift, Reformer Pilates and Barre classes. A special shoutout to my faves Harriet, Lizzy, Emily and Peter. Ya'll make my weekly workouts so darn amazing. Additionally, I LOVE the separate yoga space they have. It's so beautiful and relaxing. Yin and Restorative always get me through my tough weeks and serve as a perfect escape when grad school has me down. Frame, I frickin love you <3
Going downhill?
I've been going to Frame since they only had the one location under the arches in Shoreditch. The classes are fun and inventive, the music is great, and the instructors are positive and encouraging. I've enjoyed seeing Frame grow and working out at each new location over the years, and when they opened a branch in Fitzrovia I finally got myself a membership.
So why have I titled this review the way I did? I've always booked the Train classes on those days when I felt like pushing myself more, because the classes were smaller and I felt like I got good coaching. However, since the year started they all seem to be overly packed, and the instructors now struggle to watch everybody and make sure they have good form. I thought maybe the classes were packed with New Year's resolutioners and that it would get less crowded over time, but it is now March and just yesterday I struggled to have an enjoyable Train class.
The Train room is just not made for that many people to comfortably work out in there, nor is it able to hold enough equipment for everyone they are trying to cram in there.
I did one Frame HIIT class where for part of it, I had to set myself up in that small space between the punching bags and treadmills and wasn't able to see the instructor. Also in that same class, I had to use a heavier medicine ball than was ideal for me because there was nothing else available, so I struggled to perform the exercise correctly and left the class with some wrist pain from handling the too-heavy ball.
In one Kettlebells class, I was stuck with the last pair of 12kgs, and everything else available was heavier. The instructor encouraged us to share kettlebells with neighbours, but everyone around me didn't really have any to spare, so I had to skip some exercises or get creative with some. Another girl was also stuck with a pair of 12 kgs and wasn't able to get a full range of motion for a few exercises, and yet another girl only had one pair of 6kgs so she probably wasn't able to get the most out of that class. You'd think that Frame would know their target market (obviously not extreme bodybuilders) and would stock more weights that their clients can use without injuring themselves.
I've also been in two classes recently, one Train and one Fitness, where someone had to run out and grab a mat from another class. Have they increased the numbers for each class but not increased the equipment accordingly?
Like another reviewer mentioned, the instructors are hit or miss, but I do find that this is the case everywhere and not just at Frame. For Reformer Pilates, Lily, Robin, and Deborah are fantastic. There is one instructor who I feel doesn't have a deep understanding of Pilates and treats the Reformer like a bog standard weight machine, so I avoid her classes. Alexus' Frame Lift is great, I appreciate her detailed explanations of the exercises. I did 80's Aerobics one night and found it joyless, but the next day I did 90's Dance Cardio and felt SO uplifted afterwards.
Frame's website has been so-so since the beginning, focusing on style over function, but I've gotten used to working with its limitations over the years. A Morning-Afternoon-Evening filter on their Timetable would have been more useful to me instead of that gimmicky Mood Filter; also it would be nice if it loaded a bit faster (if there was a Morning-Afternoon-Evening filter on, maybe the page wouldn't need to load so much data).
I'm happy to go to Frame for now, but I do hope the situation gets better. I've enjoyed my Frame membership, but now that Train classes aren't as good as they used to be, and I get Pilates at a boutique studio as a work benefit, I've been considering downgrading my membership to the 6-for-£60 one and just supplementing with Classpass when I need to.
I love Frame!
I love Frame! No matter what class, I always feel comfortable and welcomed - something that I can’t say about every gym.
The classes are fun and challenging, but with variations which are great if you are a beginner, or if you want to push yourself to try something slightly more difficult. If you aren’t sure if exercise is for you, give Frame a chance!
Definately the best decision..
Has been the perfect motivation to kickstart my fitness after a slumber winter. Absolutely love the variety in classes and the staff are so friendly! Definately the best decision I have made this year was to join FRAME.
Caroline is great
Caroline is great! Knowledgeable, always starts on time and makes sure you have the best workout tailored to your individual needs. I wish Caroline would teach more momhood classes!
Great classes!
Worth it - wish it was South of the River too...
Worth it - this is more than your local gym will cost, but the classes are great fun. The hang out zones and relaxing and it is great to meet a colleague or friend and work out together. Showers are clean and lockers nice and roomy. It has a nice vibe, and the staff are really welcoming. The studios tend to be in basements with bare concrete but they are comfortable enough. Equipment is great, and this a very affordable way to do Reformer pilates. It is mostly female, young professionals, 25-40 although all are welcome. Buy the frame card or top it up as it makes classes far cheaper. I live is South London or I would make one of these my local gym...
This review would be 5 stars but…
This review would be 5 stars as I love everything else about Frame, but the classes when fully booked can be a very stressful experience. It feels like there's just 3-5 too many people in the room. If they reduced the classes sizes even slightly it would massively improve the overall experience.
Love love love Frame
I love the atmosphere at Frame and the ethos that exercise should be fun and not a punishment. As someone who has struggled with body image for years, it is so so refreshing to be taught but wonderful teachers of all shapes and sizes!
Frame Barre never disappoints
I've been going to Frame since they first opened, and I've only ever gone to Barre (create of habit!). I think it's the best barre class in London: I have done barre (in New York) with two people who studied under the creator of barre (Lotte Berk), and this class is the closest you get to her method. I will keep returning!
Great class, a little expensive
Great class, small classes so good attention from instructors in a nice environment. The staff are great. I like the way you can choose the location of the class-I'm freelance so that works well for me
Everything is good except the price. I may look for another class a little less expensive.
Lovely & friendly central London…
Lovely & friendly central London studio, great customer service
I love my weekly class of MumHood 3…
I love my weekly class of MumHood 3 with Caroline, she’s the best!
The staff were excellent
The staff were excellent, felt welcomed and showed me around. The class was also good and small size which was good
Welcoming little gym
Welcoming little gym, not intimidating like some other brands, and I would definitely recommend. Fab Barre classes, though I found most of the others are not basic entry level (I struggled) and there’s not any ‘quick’ classes on the schedule any more. Other gripe is lack of space in the changing room where people don’t use the lockers for their stuff during class, highly annoying to have to fight for space when you are paying premium rates for classes.
Amazing class structure and energy 100%…
Amazing class structure and energy 100% recommend trying them.
The most joyeous workout around!
Fun but getting too full
Frame Farringdon is considered the weakest link of the studios. The cheery front of house staff are GREAT and are a big part of why I've stayed. However the classes are really oversubscribed, and the more Frame takes on new members, the more I'm likely to leave. I don't see how their business model is sustainable unless they expand the physical space.
Some classes are so busy, it forces you to place your yoga mat right in the doorway (dangerous) and literally touching 2 other peoples'. It makes for an unpleasant exercise environment.
Also, I find the instructors hit and miss. Again, some are fantastic - they will talk you through the class, do a proper warm up, not have the music too loud and do a warm down. Most importantly, they'll watch and correct technique. But some of the instructors come across as bored dancers who are just fitting in a class for some extra cash. They won't explain the moves, are clearly parroting the same narrative, don't watch causing some people to get mild injuries, and occasionally promoting their personal side hustles.
I love Frame. I love the staff for the most part. I love the showers and the shampoo. I love the body conditioning classes.
It's just that it's losing what made it special from any other normal gym: there is not enough space, not enough consistency between instructors, and the timetable doesn't seem to evenly distribute the types of classes between days of the week. (Also it really needs an update to its website or app, helping you mark favourites or make notes.)
Hope it can improve.
