Customer service is rude and horrible. This is a fraudulent company. I do not recommend going through them if your school has it when talking to customer service they are rude and rowdy. They will have you on hold for over 30 minutes just to talk to a supervisor would not recommend.

wish i could give 0 stars. customer service sucks, esp Collete the 'account manager' is always on a power trip to win a pissing contest, speaks over you and is downright rude. Someone committed fraud on my acct, gave all docs to prove and still Nelnet wont disappear from my life.

Supposed to be my company for my loan services.However, I haven't heard anything from them.Not once other than my initial email. Hoping to get a reply soon, but if I don't I'm going to the Better Business Bureau, CFPB, States Attorney General, and Higher Education Administration.

predatory company, gave no info about payment plan types, forced me to pay $150 in nonrefundable deposits. just the worst company ever. Ticketmaster level bad.

Unfair Returned Payment Fee and Poor Customer Service

I have never had any problems with my institution — my balance was zero, and everything was completely fine on their side.
However, NelNet decided to initiate a $6,700 payment without any prior warning, even though I was not expecting any charges because I had no outstanding balance.

When I received the email that a payment was being withdrawn, I immediately canceled the payment because I had no balance due.
The payment could not be processed and was returned — and for that NelNet charged me a $20 returned payment fee, even though the situation was not my fault.

When I called customer service to understand how to get the $20 fee refunded, the representative refused to listen to me and kept repeating the same scripted answer. I then requested a supervisor — I was told her name was Lucy — and she also refused to help, even after I explained everything clearly.

I am extremely disappointed with the lack of professionalism, the refusal to review my case, and the complete disregard for the facts.
I am requesting a proper review of my account and a refund of the unfair $20 fee.

I am lucky to have paid off my student loans but it was a nightmare of an experience and the numbers never added up. I am sure I way overpaid! Customer service a disgrace! Rude and don’t know anything. I live internationally and my only option was to pay by credit card and in order to do that i had to call every month to make a payment! This was not easy considering the 6-7 hour time difference and fees to call internationally, being put on hold sometimes up to 30 minutes and they could never get my credit card to process so every month we had to repeat information several times. An absolute shit show of company and I would never recommend them! 0 stars

cmon man....it shouldnt take 10 attempts to log in to nelnet. and how come theres no student loan app in google play store. the app was easy to use and navigate compared to the website. zero stars if possible but im required to leave 1 star review

On Nelnet: based on my student loan records, I paid over $23,000.00 from 2012, after I received a letter from Federal Aid November 17, 2022 stating my Student Loan has been fully Discharge Based on Borrower Defense Evidence and will receive a refund for prior payments made to the Department on your discharged loan(s) related to Corinthian Colleges Inc.
Suddenly my payment was modify from 23K down to $14.00 same date of service 01/05/2012.
I was told year 2023 that they are working on adjusting and will update the payment history soon. Until today 07/2025 my account payments remain $14.00. I called Nelnet Customer service to get an update when the loan can be fully discharge and when can the payment history updated and when can I receive my Refunds however, I hit a road block the customer service advised me to call the federal Aid which Federal Aid told me the same to call Nelnet since Nelnet is my servicing loan company.
Currently there are 2 more outstanding loans that hasn’t discharge and it’s affecting my credit score.

I overpaid on my student loans when I paid them off. Im still waiting on a $700+ refund a 3 and a half weeks later with no answer to when I'll receive the money back.

I am nearly 70 years old and they destroyed my credit in one day because I kept getting thank you for making payment notices...but their 20th century platform does not notify you if an acct number is one number off...for 4 months I thought I was making payments...they have ability to say thank you for payment by email but no ability to detect and inform you of an incorrect acct number...so in one night thanks to nelnet my credit dropped almost 200 points because they dont tell you to correct acct error This seems very substandard for a federal student loan servicer and no private credit card company would be allowed to operate like this!

This company lobbied for the current administration so they could dismantle the department of education and stop loan forgiveness despite thousands of defrauded students being mislead by their institutions. Nelnet and the people that work there are villainous soulless people that support this billionaire run government solely to make themselves richer. They refused to acknowledge my legal right of disputing my private loans despite court ordered rulings that my federal loans had been discharged. Criminal misconduct and don't think it's anything else. I just paid off my loans after second thoughts of a debt protest due to my credit being effected. I won't ever have to deal with the scum that run this place again.

Nelnet charged me twice for a single monthly payment.

When I called, the representative tried to BLAME ME for their duplicate charge.

Then they made up that I have a "past due" amount when I disputed one of the charges.

Why is Nelnet even allowed to handle student loans in the first place?

This is a predatory company that does not contact the lender.My kid took a loan from Department of education that got transferred to Nelnet, This people bashed my credit to the tank without contacting me .Their agents are terrible, they have no clues on how to help customers .That was the worst experience with a loan company.I also think they are trying to double dip because I paid them the whole amount for the undergraduate part and they did not let EDfinancial know that they have pocketed the undergraduate part of the loan.

If I could rate zero stars I would. The absolute worst when it comes to notifications on payments. I recently found out that they hit my credit through my experian notifications, but not a peep from them. I was past due but was never notified despite them saying they sent emails calls and letters.. well guess what never got them they were all sent to spam. Also never once received a letter to my house about the past due. I am fuming with rage over how horrible this loan company is. Good luck to anyone that gets their loans transferred to them unwillingly. 20 years of perfect credit in the trash due to these monsters. Seems like I’m not the only who has been screwed over by this company..

Absolutely awful. My student loans got transferred to them against my will. They have you sign up for auto payments and they just don’t… work. Then you get late fees and more interest because your payment didn’t work. A hassle to get in touch with someone, then once you do they don’t know anything. I don’t even leave reviews often but this company is a legal scam. If you can stay far away.

Fcuk nelnet. I've already paid my principle many times over and the interest keeps skyrocketing.

My loans got switched from Great Lakes to them and I had some issues in the beginning. It took them forever to respond but they were resolved eventually. Payment process is pretty easy at least. Their customer service is pretty bad overall.

Use College Ave Loan instead of this horrendous Nelnet bank. They really suck. The loan process is cumbersome and the rates are not that competitive. They did a hard pull on my credit (parent cosigner) and then asking for all source of supporting documentations in piecemeal fashion. When we submitted the identified documents, they asked for more without extending any time for response (3 separate requests). After a month from the date of the pulled credit report, they terminated our application because we failed to "timely" provide materials according to their piecemeal requests. They told us we could re-apply and they will do another hard pull for credit report. No Thank you!!!
They do not consider “combined income” because only one member of the adult household applied as a cosigner. However, they are okayed with combined rental income which has both parent’s names on them. How illogical! This is how the underwriting people can jack up the interest rates. Very frustrating dealing with the customer representatives because they cannot do anything for you other than repeating what they see on your account. The reason why we applied to Nelnet because we had Discover Loan with competitive rate and they transferred the service to Nelnet. Do not waste your time if you already secured a loan.

I give Nelnet 0 stars. I payed off my loan through their website during covid. When repayment started, I was emailed that my payments would start again and for more than before. THIS IS THE WORST COMPANY AND WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. Do not service your loans through Nelnet. IF you can move them, move them. They steal money and then tell you "they have no idea where it went, even though records are sent of it being taken out of your bank account". Supervisors are unbelievably rude, and they always say "we made a note, we will call you back and they NEVER CALL BACK". This is the most horrible company and business the government has ever put out there. I will advise as many people as I possibly can to move their loans to another servicer. If you don't want your money stolen, then move your loans to another reliable company

I made an overpayment when paying my last payment. Eight weeks later I am still waiting on my refund. Depending on who I talk with; it was sent out three weeks ago, but I think I got scammed unless they sent it via China. They took my money electronically, so I am not sure why I had to be reimbursed via a check. Be careful!!!
