Couldn't be a worse company to deal with. They're impossible to communicate with, especially if you don't live in the US. It's frustrating and I'm getting secondhand embarrassment trying to deal with them. The most fun part is trying to do a loan consolidation. I don't think I could have made it easier for them to see where my proof of income/pay frequency information and somehow they still can't seem to figure it out! If I have any issues with paying student loans, it will be because of their incompetence.
The website is terrible
The website is terrible. I keep getting emails asking me to update my information. The only missing info is .. my email address. Maybe the email you're sending this to is my email, Nelnet? What's worse, the update page is dead, no links of data fields work at all. So, now I can't submit payment.

Horrible with correcting their errors
Made my payments on time (have proof) they still show me past due for over 1.5 months. I have called several times. First time, they said they would fix the problem. Second time, the customer service person said they are still working on it. Third time, my next payment was due and I made it on time, but a week and half later, they are still showing me past due. Even though, my payment history on the account show payments were made on time. On this 3rd call, they tried to tell me I did not make a payment for Feb and March. Nelnet put me on deferment and was not required to make a payment until my loan repayments application was fixed. Once payment resumed, I began paying on time the amount they required. They are horrible when it comes to correcting their account errors.
will deliberately set you up for failure to pay
was notified that my account was in administrative forbearance until november 2024 so i took the time to adjust and pay off other debt i have. turns out that notification was false and my account was never in forbearance so now i have late fees to pay now too. thanks a lot for deliberate miscommunication and making it clear that we shouldnt trust your service. thanks for deliberately sabotaging us into paying you more money. i have to be stuck with these scam artists for 20 years too. id give 0 stars if i can.
This company is a nightmare
This company is a nightmare, site does not load and when it does, it doesn't recognize the user. Says they updated their site but their IT crew must have been a group of Alpacas. Customer Service is a joke and if you have the misfortune of actually getting a hold of anyone it becomes apparent that they were smart enough to NOT use Nelnet for any type of education. Better to default then go through this EVERY month.
Forced to suffer
Like many other students, I was "gifted" the misfortune of having to deal with the goblins of Nelnet for the next 15-20 years, no way out, until death do us part. I can only imagine how they are making money hand over fist, but still have the gall to offer a website more shaky than a house of cards in a wind tunnel. You had also better pray that you never need to correct or update them about something on your account, because you will spend hours and hours over the course of months needing to correct it, and jumping through hoops like a circus dog to appease their demands. I would rather have to stop-drop-and-roll on a pile of glass and shower off with lemon juice than call in to their customer service line, but since they have my banking details I have no choice but to give them a call every once and awhile. Of course they will have no problem taking whatever money they think is correct in the meantime. I don't expect them to improve their "customer experience" or their products anytime soon, because unfortunately for many there is no "other guy" and no way to "shop around" for student loans. Until they're out of my life forever, I will do everything in my power to give them as little additional money as possible and to pray every day that their databases of outstanding loans get wiped.

Auto-Payment Problems
I have had to call Nelnet so many times (each time having to wait for extended times). After an agent assured me that they had set up automatic payments on my account, I started getting emails saying that I'd missed payments. I called and found out that auto-payments cannot be set up over the phone; I have to do that on my own. So, I set up auto-payments online (with email confirmation), and AGAIN, I received emails saying that I'd missed payment. So, I'm on the phone again.

They are withdrawing 5x what my monthly payment should be. They don't have history of these transactions on their website either. When I got ahold of customer support they said I need to email them my bank statements proving that extra money is being taken out of my account. This company is super sketchy.
Nelnet is a disaster
I would give ZERO stars if I could. I set up a loan repayment program with Nelnet in September. I just received an email from Nelnet saying my monthly payment would be $3332 a month MORE than what I agreed to. I called to talk to someone and the phone number they provided on Nelnet website lead to an infomercial on life alert medical devices. Just a really obnoxious thing to lead people into an advertisement that has nothing to do with why they are calling. I tried their automated chat and that was worthless. I finally found a different number and sat on hold for 30 minites and then the women i spoke with told me I have been paying them each month, but im not actually paying off my loans because Im not in a loan repayment program (which is what I set up in September). My bank records show payments to Nelnet that Nelnet claims I havent made. The woman couldnt help me and put me on hold for another hour to speak with a “specialist”. I got nowhere with her. These people have lost my private information and are receiving monthly payments from me, but not paying back the loan with the money ive paid. They are completely incompetent and their customer service doesn’t exist. After hours and hours of trying to figure this out, no one at Nelnet seems to be able to help me. Avoid using Nelnet for any reason as they are a terrible company. Inhave multiple other complaints about them but dont have anymore time to waste on such a lousy company.
They don't reply to you
They don't reply to you. So when they do something wrong, which to be fair only happens on days that end in y or somewhere between the 1st and 31st of the month, you can't get it fixed.
Their customer service is literally non-existent yet i'm forced to use them because they own my loans now.
It'd be nice if the government would step in and make them actually do their job but i'm sure Jeffrey R. Noordhoek and his army of lobbyist have bought off all the right people.
Absolute Garbage Customer Service
My loan was purchased from Great Lakes and account is screwed up. No response via email requests, online chatbot is garbage and hours of time on hold without getting to a person. Amazing the good reviews from places like US News, just google their actual customer reviews and will see their customer support is non existent.

I’d give them ZERO if I could. I’ve called about 30 times over the last year and NEVER ever have I been able to talk to anyone. Hours and hours of holding. Not once have I actually spoken to a human being. This is ridiculous and horrible customer service!!!
WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE
I have been in contact with Nelnet for months regarding a customer service issue with no response. I am currently on the line with a supervisor and have been on the phone for over two hours!!! This company has no idea what they are doing and should be investigated for fraud.
INCOMPETENT
Absolutely terrible! I paid 25k of my loan off before repayment started and set up autopay. Now I'm on phone for over an hour waiting to fix since I have a past due payment due to Nelnets incompetence!!! What do you expect from a government service, poor quality! Yep you guessed it!

Actually they get no stars but i had to click a star to write review. I have been on hold for 1 hour & 40 minutes had to hang up. Read reviews not good ...i just had a few simple questions. It is a disservice to customers that dont have internet access. I will make my first payment on line with help from co worker. Then will just mail checks. There seems to be a lot of legal actions against this company. How sad we have to deal with such a low rated & incompetent company .

If I could leave 0 stars I would! My loans were transferred to them and it's the worst thing that could have been done. Having to wait on hold for 2+ hours before getting an age t on the phone is ridiculous! They need to get rid of this company IMMEDIATELY!
Absolute nightmare
My loans were completely paid off. Then I was told whatever I paid during the payment pause was forgiven and they sent me $10k back. Then I was told nevermind, not forgiven. I paid it all off, completely so there was a zero balance. Now it’s showing I still have a balance. I have tried calling every day and emailing and have yet to receive a response or speak to anyone. Terrible company.

They still haven’t posted my payment, three weeks after it came out of my bank by ACH. I’ve only reached out to them 12 times, with no response. They just stole my payment.
