In August of 2022 my family experienced a house fire. This has been the most stressful time in my life. I am a combat veteran. I would rather participate in that activity again than go through this experience.
The fire damaged every portion of our home, save for the 4 walls that make the outside structure. Every piece of sheetrock, every pipe, every electrical wire, every roof shingle, every piece of siding, every door, all of our furniture, 90 percent of our clothes, pots & pans, tools, family photos, birth certificates, military records, wedding photos, keepsakes….was damaged.
We went from a perfectly functional family of 6 to homeless in the blink of an eye. Most people ask if we had insurance. Yes, we have good insurance. We are extremely grateful for that. The stress of managing our entire family’s emotional status all at the same time was non-trivial. When this happens, your world shrinks from long term planning and goals, to managing by the minute. Like, “I need to get shoes for my kids in the next hour.” And, “How will we eat breakfast in the morning?”
Our community really stepped up for us in our time of need and we are unable to express our gratitude for their personal sacrifice to out.
About ½ way through the rebuild process we had a hiccup in the financing from the insurance company and realized we would need additional funds to complete the rebuild. Most of that was because we chose to make some improvement while our house was stripped to the bones. I was referred to RenoFi by a neighbor who is financially savvy. Enter Mathew Escobar and Jaimie Choe.
Mathew and Jamie engaged with me during a time of intense Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD). What was actually on the line was my family’s home. If this funding fell through, then we would be forced to sell and leave our community. This was also an a-typical project. The house project was about 85% done. The task of convincing a lender that all of this was on the level was not easy. The amount of paperwork generated by the lender looked suspiciously like it was designed to create as much pain as possible. In that regard, they succeeded.
With nearly no emotional reserves left, intense FUD, my wife and I threw ourselves on the professionalism of Mathew and Jamie. Between the 2 of them they accounted for 1.5 million dollars in individual assets to satisfy the requirements of the lender. It was a painstaking process. A process in which I gave up on near the end. Without exaggeration, I called Mathew and told him, “Were done. I used to hold the highest security clearance the US government can issue, and it was easier to get that then it was to go through this process. I’m totally burned out, and cannot continue to drag my family through this much uncertainty in perpetuity.” Mathew said, “Mike, give me those three documents. If they reject it I will call you and tell you personally. Give me 3 more days. Please just stick with me for 3 more days.” That worked.

Because of their grit, unrelenting drive for accuracy, honesty, and goal orientation, and with great credit to themselves and RenoFI we have restarted our project. The stress of this house fire is starting to turn into hope for new beginnings, excitement to return to our community, and thankfulness for grace in this entire process. Mathew and Jamie helped us clear a hurdle that I would not have been able to clear by myself.
