Everyone I worked with was great, but my application got lost during a system transition and it took 3 months of phone calls to finally get it through underwriting. There has to be an easier way to check on the status of a pending application and then initiate action.

The process of purchasing a life insurance policy from SBLI was acceptable, or even good.
The SBLI "system" that caused me to renew/replace my policy lacks transparency and explanation of how the process works and what options (smart/best options) exist. Frankly I feel like I was "ripped off" for many years. Not Happy with the SBLI practices for handling expiring policies.

I have used SBLI previously. They provide the best rates for term policies, the agent was very helpful, and the process was straightforward.

Easy online quote. Connect with agent via phone. E-signed authorization for medical records. Arranged for nurse to perform vitals at my home. Followed up by email with additional information. It took about 6 weeks for approval. I requested insurance in December before Christmas.

I was shocked to learn that my monthly estimated premium was revised up by about 75% for what I consider to be a poor reason. Really, one seemingly insignificant thing that any average person may have included made me a 75% greater life insurance risk? I just find that to be very hard to believe. You should have more refined pricing model that recognizes this change was due to one thing and one thing alone should not represent such a high increase. Especially taken into the proper context.

I think the underwriter was too critical and read too much into one piece of medical information. Especially given the way my doctor characterized this for me. Lack of clarity on how one could start at a good rating and be marked down to what appears to be average with the difference resulting in approx. 45% increase in premiums was a shock. A 10% or 20% increase would have seemed more appropriate having moved from one category to the next from my consumer sided view. A 45% increase seems like I went from good to bad. The agent did a good job of explaining things, but that still did not leave me in a warm and fussy "good place."

I sent the agent I was working with an email with a quick and minor relevant question a few times throughout the process of getting a quote for life insurance. He never replied unless he had to to keep things moving forward. I wound up having to call customer service and ask them. They cc'd the agent in an email back to me. Not a huge deal, but not courteous or professional on the agent's part. The customer service rep was great.
In addition to that, when the agent gave me the initial quote, he forced my health rating to be better than the one that was automatically given to him to make the quote "more accurate". Seemed like a slightly slimy move to make me a little more likely to keep going through the process with the hopes that when I got the real number, I'd be too invested to quit and look elsewhere.
