We had a really positive experience with John Charcol, and in particular, we’re extremely grateful to Athavan, our mortgage advisor.

Our situation was quite tricky, as we’re a married couple and one of us is international and didn’t yet had a UK visa. The process was therefore a little bumpy, but Athavan was incredibly responsive throughout, always quick to answer our questions and very open to discussing the details and helping us understand our options.

He worked really hard to find the best possible solution for us, and thanks to his support, we managed to get our mortgage over the line. We’re now very happy in our new home in Scotland!

Excellent Mortgage Service – Highly Recommended!
I had an excellent experience with the mortgage application process. The service provided by Kirtan Hingu and Jenny Burvill-Crane was outstanding from start to finish. They were extremely professional, helpful, and responsive throughout. They explained everything clearly, answered all my questions, and made what could have been a stressful process feel simple and straightforward.

I was particularly impressed with how quickly they responded when an amendment was needed to the mortgage offer. They went above and beyond to help and managed to get the amended mortgage offer within just one day, which was incredibly helpful and made a huge difference in keeping the purchase on track.

I really appreciated their dedication, attention to detail, and willingness to go the extra mile. The communication was excellent, and I always felt supported and well looked after throughout the process.

Amazing service from start to finish — professional, efficient, and genuinely caring. I would highly recommend Kirtan and Jenny to anyone looking for mortgage advice and support!

Very disappointing experience with John Charcol

Unfortunately, my experience with John Charcol was very disappointing, particularly after being passed over to my mortgage adviser, Kirtan.

Kirtan showed little to no interest in my case. He was frequently unavailable, sometimes away on annual leave without letting me know, and on several occasions said he would get back to me by a certain time/day but then simply disappeared for days. During what is already a stressful process as a first-time buyer, this level of communication was extremely frustrating.

The biggest question I’m left with is: what exactly was I paying extra for?

I could have approached a high-street bank myself, and ultimately the interest rate I was offered wasn’t significantly better than what I could have found independently. In fact, I had to keep checking rates myself and specifically ask Kirtan to look at switching me to a better rate. I expected a mortgage adviser to proactively monitor this and advise me, rather than me having to do the legwork myself.

That said, I want to make it clear that my experience with Georgia, who handled my case before it was passed to Kirtan, was completely different. Georgia was excellent — responsive, helpful and genuinely made me feel like my case was being looked after. Unfortunately, once she could no longer continue with my case and recommended Kirtan, the level of service dropped considerably.

I appreciate that people can be busy and that annual leave happens, but communication is a fundamental part of the service when you’re paying a premium for professional mortgage advice.

Overall, I’m left questioning the value of using a mortgage broker service when I felt I had to chase, check rates and manage much of the process myself. Based on my experience with Kirtan, I would not use John Charcol again. Georgia, however, deserves recognition for the service she provided before the handover.

I came to John Charcol as someone who generally avoids brokers, consultants and middlemen wherever possible. I have never been particularly enamoured of the consultocracy that has grown up in the UK over the past forty years, and I was initially reluctant to pay someone to do something I thought I could probably manage myself.

My experience with John Charcol, and Andrew Ireland in particular, proved me soundly wrong.

My circumstances were not straightforward. I work outside the UK and am paid abroad, which made finding an appropriate mortgage considerably more difficult. Andrew understood the situation immediately, found a lender willing to work with my circumstances, and guided me through the process from beginning to end. Looking back, his services were probably some of the wisest money I spent during the entire house purchase. I am genuinely not sure I could have navigated it successfully without him.

What impressed me most was the way Andrew worked on my behalf. He was calm, knowledgeable and remarkably proactive throughout. He regularly checked in, kept track of what was happening and made sure things continued to move. At no point did I feel that I was chasing him or wondering what was going on.

Anyone who has bought a house in England will know the familiar experience of unanswered emails, telephone calls that go nowhere, long waits and the general feeling that nothing happens unless you push it yourself. My experience with Andrew and John Charcol was the complete opposite. Questions were answered quickly, problems were dealt with, and I always had the sense that someone competent was actively looking after my interests.

I began the process deeply sceptical about using a mortgage broker. I finished it wondering how I would have managed without one. I cannot recommend Andrew Ireland and John Charcol highly enough.

My second time using John Charcoal for a mortgage in conjunction with a property purchase. First class service and excellent communication. My broker, Sarah Teff, was excellent as always at getting me a great mortgage, and was thorough with great communication. My case was then handled through to completion by Katherine Hollyoake, who's communication and efficiency was great to deal with. Highly recommend.

Could not recommend Daniel Williams enough. I have used as a first time buyer and now for a remortgage and each time he has been great to deal with. Clearly very knowledgable, quick to respond and really helpful.

I would recommend Charcol without reservation. I received specialised, professional advice throughout. Charcol secured a bridging loan and then a refinance mortage for me. The help I received from Andrew Ireland was invaluable in securing a buy-to-let limited company mortgage for the off-plan purchase of an investment flat. I initially tried to secure a mortgage myself from lenders such as Natwest but later realised they declined applications for investor-led developments. Under tight time constraints Andrew was able to identify and successfully submit an application with a willing lender. Andrew not only liaised with the mortgage lender but also the solicitors involved in ensuring completion took place prior to a date imposed by the seller. I am very grateful for his help.

As per the title of this review.

There are hundred of mortgage advisors out there. Almost all will be getting a cut from the mortgage company,,,, and many are primarily focused on this cut and not the customer who they represent.
JC - it seems to me - remain focussed on their customers . That's as it should be. comprehensive. Thorough. Hot on detail. And fair.
