Popped into Dorringtons
Popped into Dorringtons, Arbury Court to see what they had to offer. Attractive branding, family run heritage business, friendly staff.
The baked goods looked enticing but they are full of preservatives and e-numbers, which was such a shame.
The sourdough loaf looked really good so I purchased a loaf and requested the ingredient which listed around 15 rather than simply flour, salt and yeast. Unfortunately the bread smelt and tasted artificial and came in a plastic not paper bag. On the plus side, they had a bread slicer.
I would like to support this family run business and I hope they adapt and continue, however, they need to consider removing the unecessary preservatives and e-numbers, and swapping plastic bags to paper. More vegan options would also be welcomed.
The quality of products has gone down…
The quality of products has gone down terribly. Most of the baked goods taste artificial and are extremely overpriced. I would not give them my custom anymore.
5 stars ⭐️
I love the food and drink that Dorringtons bakery is providing. Looks nice and it’s delicious. Also, the ladies that works here are very nice. I’m regular customer in Cambridge. I am recommending this Bakery.

I moved to Bishops Stortford in 1985…
I moved to Bishops Stortford in 1985 and Dorringtons was the local bakery in the town.
I have visited a few of their branches, but only visit very occasionally.
I visited the Saffron Walden branch a little while ago and enquired if they have any chocolate eclairs which they didn’t, it was late in the day and assumed they must have sold out of cream cakes.
I recently visited the Thaxted branch again there were no cream cakes in the shop, and not a great selection of other cakes.
This is supposed to be a bakery and at the end of the day competing with supermarkets that sell everything.
What local bakery would not sell things like chocolate eclairs, cream meringues, fresh cream sponges.
I asked why they have stopped selling them and was told it was since Covid, that was 5 years ago.
Like other people have said it is also expensive!
Zero costumer service and zero quity products
I went to Darringtons in Harlow Potters Street and I have been welcomed with complete ignorance. There was a lady that didn't eaven bother to look at me or my son while we were waiting to be served. Two othe members of staff a male and a young female were chatting with each other same without any attention given to us. When we finally been obeserved I have asked for a tosted bacon and a tosted sausage sandwich of which I have been told they will not fry any more sausages, my little boy asked for 2 sosage rolls that when he attempted to eat were burnt beyond belief.
Forgot to say we left the shop and the we realised that they have not given us the 2 sausages we paid fore and so we went back and probably that's the reson we been given the burnt ones.
I would have given this guys -0 but luckily for them 1 is the lowest.
I will never buy from them again.
Very poor levels of hygiene …
I have recommended Dorringtons Arbury in the past as the bread and cakes are so good. Unfortunately I’m not sure I’ll go there anymore because of the hygiene level. Staff handle cash and then handle the baked goods and gloves aren’t worn. You see the staff making up baguettes etc at the back without gloves either. I witnessed a member of staff smoking outside the shop and then go back in serving bread and cakes without washing her hands. Such a pity as the produce is lovely.
*UPDATE: since writing this review I have been back to see if hygiene has improved. One assistant serving bread was wearing gloves but unfortunately the staff preparing baguettes etc were not. While I was there I saw the member of staff come out with a baguette, handle cash and then return to making the baguettes without washing her hands. This might sound picky but germs are passed on easily particularly through hands and handwashing at the very least should take place when preparing food.
Called in morning to see if Dorringtons…
Called in morning to see if Dorringtons could provide a large celebration cake for the same day. Lady in Sawbridgeworth shop was so helpful. She called their other branches and managed to find me one at their Old Harlow branch. Excellent customer services and beautiful looking cake .. looking forward to tasting :)
The staff ignore you
The staff ignore you. They chat to eachother. You'd made to wait even though there are clearly free staff just faffing around staring ahead. The staff are just on a pathetic power trip over buns and cakes. And then prices are ridiculous too. £7.40 for two sliced granary loaves. I mean talk about GREEDY. I won't visit again. Their advertising makes out they're friendly. But the staff are awful unsmiling clearly bitter that they're working on a shop floor. I have a huge network of friends locally having lived in the area for 50 years - and I'll be telling everyone what I think about Dorringtons. Shame on you!

Visited the shop in bishops stortford ( snowley parade ) this morning
4 staff behind the counter two ladies and two men .
There was one customer in front of me walking up and down trying to decide what they wanted which was fine as we all do this , while I was waiting the two ladies behind the counter just kept talking with one another , I thought at least one of them would come over and ask if I would like something but they just kept talking, after a couple of minutes one of the guys came over and asked what I would like , better late then never I just felt I was being ignored and was astonished at the level of customer service and how rude they are , I think some staff training is in order . If I was the manager of this shop there is no way I would stand for this .
I’m a new customer to this shop and not sure if I would come back .
Visited dorringtons today and purchased…
Visited dorringtons today and purchased a Brie and crispy bacon baguette. When I got home to have my baguette I was shocked and very disappointed in the quality and presentation. The butter wasn’t spread evenly.. not sure if they’re on a butter shortage? The bacon as described ‘ crispy bacon ‘ it was broken up pieces of bacon which looked like the leftovers from the day before and completely rock hard. I went back to show them and hadn't received the best customer service in fact the young lady had quite poor attitude, sarcastic telling me it’s ‘ crispy bacon ‘ (I’ve never had crispy bacon like that before!) and couldn’t care less, not helpful at all. I hadn't been offered a replacement or a refund and was left feeling very let down! Serving members of the public myself in the past I would never of dreamed of speaking to a customer like that and I wouldn’t have dreamed leaving them leave not satisfied. I would like to kindly add, if staff are not happy in the job they are in they shouldn’t be taking up a position as it clearly shows to the public they are unhappy.
I have pictures and a video that I am more than happy to share.
Rude
Rude. Never greeted with a welcoming smile or a pleasant manner by staff. They almost seem snobby towards customers. I have visited a number of times since Dorringtons took over, each time was a similar experience. Smile and learn some manners…, PLEASE!

prices in the vans are very high and scrimp on the fillings as well after numerous discussions still a year later nothing has been done by the portion of fillings places into baguettes and sandwich's no bagels in this place as well and poor veg selection kept on vans only really doing bacon mainly seems to be 70percent of what they stock in the vans. directors take note don't scrimp on your fillings.
BYO cup
Hello I was in hatfield Heath today and was surprised when bringing my own mugs that neither would the manager rinse them under the tap (due to covid restrictions - which I can loosely understand) however I was shocked that there was no cost reduction for bringing my own cups. This is not setting a good example for the environment and educating / supporting your customers around best practice. I wondered what your policy is re bring your own cup and if you considered joining your competition such as Starbucks, Costa, Nero and the likes who all adjust their prices accordingly.
Ordered the 3-day notice chocolate…
Ordered the 3-day notice chocolate brownie cake for my daughters birthday. On the Dorrington's website the cake is shown with a gold finish on top. In reality, I received a plain brown cake with no gold and merely a series of lines scored in the top, presumably as they thought I needed help deciding how to cut the cake! The manager unhelpfully offered to send it back to their bakery to finish the cake, but as I needed it today that was no good. I requested a discount for the unfinished cake but this was refused. Annoyingly I could have bought a dull brown cake anywhere for substantially less money. As it was I had to pay in full and buy more decorations to make it look better. Rubbish service and wouldn't recommend.
my sons birthday cake was amazing
my sons birthday cake was amazing, so happy I chose them to make it. They are on the pricey side but well worth it.
