Do not use Expedia
Ruined my partner's birthday trip and left us $198 out of pocket.
I used Expedia to book a three-night stay at the 5-star Elements Byron Bay for my partner's birthday weekend in early January 2026. I chose to use Expedia because it advertised room availability, while other websites, including Elements' own website, did not.
Expedia text messaged and emailed me to confirm the hotel booking (clearly stating 'Your hotel is confirmed' along with the itinerary), after which my partner and I booked our flights and arranged leave from work. I also booked several other activities and restaurants in Byron Bay for my partner's birthday.
A few days later, Expedia called me to say that the hotel had no availability, and proposed several inferior alternatives at 'equal or greater price' - most of which were 4-star hotels/motels with two bedrooms, which offered no value to us and were substantially inferior to our original choice, which was a 5-star resort with numerous amenities on-site.
Why advertise availability, take our money, and then send a separate confirmation email if there's no stock available? In most jurisdictions, this would be misleading or deceptive conduct and amount to a breach of consumer law. Some might even consider this a 'bait and switch'.
Expedia offered no other remedy besides a refund, leaving my partner and me with no option but to book directly with the resort for a later date and reschedule our flights, incurring a $198 AUD flight change fee.
Terrible experience that left my partner and me extraordinarily disappointed and inconvenienced.
My partner and I have resolved to go out of our way to discourage others from using Expedia.
Extremely Disappointing and Misleading…
Extremely Disappointing and Misleading Experience
I booked what I believed were business class tickets through Expedia at a total cost of $22,000+. After completing and fully paying for the purchase, I received confirmation only to discover that every single segment was economy class. To make matters worse, trips that were supposed to be around 21 hours ballooned to over 30+ hours, with multiple long and unnecessary layovers.
This was not a minor inconvenience—it completely changed the comfort, value, and feasibility of the trip. The booking was misleading, and the pricing did not reflect what was actually provided.
Resolving this was another nightmare. It took three months of back-and-forth emails with Expedia and the airlines to finally receive a partial refund, and even then Expedia deducted $800 in so-called “administrative fees.” Charging that amount after such a significant error is unacceptable.
This experience cost an enormous amount of time, money, and stress. I have completely lost trust in Expedia and will never use them again nor recommend them to anyone. For a company of this size, the lack of transparency, accountability, and customer care is shocking.
Awful frustrating agency to deal with…
Awful frustrating agency to deal with! moronic staff! I wasted a number of hours trying to get help for transactions that were charged to my card even though no booking was confirmed. Multiple issues with using using their app. I will never use this stupid agency again
Expedia circus
Travel agencies please stop using Expedia! Please! For everyone's health and sanity, book directly with the hotel.
Absolutely unacceptable experience.
Absolutely unacceptable experience.
I booked through Expedia Australia expecting standard customer support, and what I received was confusion, delays, and zero accountability. Despite multiple attempts to resolve the issue, no one was able to provide clear answers or meaningful help. I was passed between agents, promised callbacks that never happened, and left to fix the problem myself.
This was stressful, time-consuming, and completely avoidable. I would not recommend using Expedia if you want reliable service or proper support when things go wrong.
Never book with Expedia or Wotif
Never book with Expedia or Wotif. I arrived at my 4-star hotel to find a room that reeked of mould — it was so strong we couldn’t stay in it. The second room was just as bad. The hotel admitted the problem and approved a refund, but Expedia/Wotif refused to honour it.
In Australia It’s illegal selling accommodation with mould.
I was exhausted, stressed, and forced to book a new hotel at my own expense. I’ve never felt so unsupported by a booking platform. I don’t want anyone else to go through this.
Do not use
Do not use! I booked accommodation through Expedia and then had the landlord send me additional contracts, in which it asks for an additional 30% deposit and if I didn't sign, they may not honour the booking. Sent Expedia a note asking them to help clarify with the landlord as I had booked and paid through them and there was no mention of this previously. Expedia's response was they can't see a "VRBO" booking and for me to go through the VRBO app. Unfortunately all you get is a useless chatbot in VRBO app and no ability to chat to a person. Expedia just washed their hands off the matter and I had to speak with the landlord directly. Completely unacceptable and I will never risk this level of stress booking through Expedia again
I accidentally gave a 1 star via…
I accidentally gave a 1 star via Expedia app. After numerous calls and emails they would not change it. Poor form.
No support for unused ticket since…
No support for unused ticket since plans had changed. Family had to purchase another airline ticket because the unused ticket was cancelled by the airline. Reached out to the airline and they of course said to contact Expedia which we did and the ticket still showed as active for the return flight (NOT THE CASE). $300 out of pocket for a ticket that was original paid and issued by Expedia.
Lesson learned
Lesson learned. Do not book flight via expedia. Book your flight directly with the airline
Read detail below:
Had a flight cancelled due to medical condition. Expedia bounced me to Qantas to handle the cancellation, and Qantas bounced me back to expedia to do it since they are the travel agency.
I had contacted expedia several times and eventually they agreed to submit the request on my behalf and requested a medical certificate. I attached the medical certificate in the email and never heard back. Upon following up they said the never received it and asked me to upload it directly to the airline. At this point I'm convinced they just dont want to do it or dont event the slightest care to the customer
Very poor experience with Expedia
Very poor experience with Expedia. Their website and agent confirmed that breakfast was included in my booking, yet the reservation they sent to the property was “room only.” I was forced to pay again for something that was clearly advertised as included.
What made it worse was the customer service. I provided screenshots, chat transcripts, and proof of the mistake, but kept receiving emails from different representatives asking me to repeat the same information. No consistency, no ownership, and no resolution.
This feels like misleading advertising and terrible customer service. I will think twice before booking with Expedia again.
Expedia poor customer service
I am publishing these informations hoping that Expedia’ bosses see this and fix my open case. There is no other way to get trough their none-human Expedita customers support.😱 Extremely difficult almost impossible getting in touch with an Expedia agent. I have an application case request open as follows:
My itinerary number 73197615814821 My my review deleting request #651007292794, dated 18 August. Two weeks passed and there was no action by Expedta customers agents. They lost my business. Hello is there anyone there at Expedia customer support???? 😡
Cancelled the flight
Booked return flight through Expedia. Paid in full. Got confirmation from the airline. One leg was fine. All of a sudden they cancelled the return flight and said it was not refundable! Wow, how nice. Now I am going to small claims tribunal, we'll see what they will tell there.
Communication is Unacceptable
Going back and forth with an AI chatbot is unacceptable! Keeps giving me generic answers that don't help me. It is unacceptable! ChatGPT gives me more information than your own AI chatbot. This is not an industry where you have room to make mistakes. These things cost money. They take forever to answer questions and then time out very quickly if you don't get back to them. I have called their NZ phone number countless times, and they tell me to contact them in an alternative way. I have contacted their chat many times, and they keep telling me to call them. How would you like me to contact you? Suppose I should jump into a boat and sail over?
Expedia is non responsive with dishonest vendors
I booked accommodation through its website for 3 nights accommodation at Suite 39 Guesthouse in Salerno I found
This place had an appalling smell that I had to book elsewhere. Expedia did not respond to my requests for a refund nor did the dishonest vendor. I will never use Expedia for bookings again. Awful service. I do not recommend Suite39 - very dishonest and distrustful.
Deceitful and Greedy
Because of my bank's set limits for visa card transactions which neccesitated my card being declined for full payment for a Brisbane- Lagos- Brisbane return ticket, I was forced to buy departure only Brisbane-Lagos flight tickets at exactly 11.59pm on the 29th July 2025. I paid Aud3596.75 for the one way tickets but when I made searches for Lagos-Brisbane tickets i discovered that buying tickets for that route was
much more expensive than I expected.
I called expedia customer care within 2 hours of the ticket purchase and asked to either cancel the Brisbane- Lagos flight booking and hold on to the money so i can pay the additional amount required to purchase return tickets or alternatively they can give me a refund so i can make a fresh booking for return tickets on expedia. they refused both options claiming my 24 hour window period of getting a refund was over at 11.59Pm which incidentaly was the exact time I paid for the ticket. All pleas for reasoning that my refund option window cannot expire at the exact time i bought the tickets fell on deaf ears as they sited company policy. I ended up loosing Aud 1088.76 in cancellation penalties which was the only option expedia left me with despite my making calls to them requesting assistance only 2 hours after i made online payment and despite making a forced cancellation within 12 hours of the tickets purchase. It is such a painful experience and leaves a sour taste in the mouth that i had to loose such amount of money. It is unfair that I wasn't obliged a change or refund even within 2 hours when I should have a 24 hour window period for free refund. Consumers need to be protected from such sharp practices. I definitely won't recommend expedia to anyone
No customer service
When you want to book cheap accommodations without any customer support this is the site for you. The price is competitive most of the times (best to check Google Hotels which compares multiple sites).
The problem is when seeking the smallest of all clarification the following will occur:
- Customer service will say there is nothing they can do
- Legal team will immediately reach out with a formal letter saying this is not Expedia's fault and you agree to pay the full amount and will not dispute the charges and that if you dispute they will cancel your booking and retain any cancellation fees as per their policy.
DO NOT USE EXPEDIA!!!! THIEVES.
THIEVES!!!! DO NOT DO IT! Book directly with the airlines.
So we decided to book a business trip using expedia. HUGE MISTAKE!
We were charged immediately so we figured we were good.
First, after two days, they only confirmed the return flight. Not a word about the flight leaving. So we thought we would try to call. Took HOURS to try to find a phone number for these jokers. Worthless anyway but we did find one. PUT YOUR NUMBER ON YOUR FRONT PAGE!!
Spoke with Leo who kept us jumping through hoops and trying to find itineraries, credit cards that were charged, partial emails etc.....48 minutes, THEIR confirmation numbers, confirmation number of return flights, everything! and he did nothing to help. Kept saying there was an issue but could not tell us what the issue was or how to fix it. Got tired of spinning our wheels with Leo and when I asked for his supervisor he accused me of abusing him - by asking for his supervisor? Wow. Trying to clearly CYA but Leo was the a very Worthless level 1 support.
He finally got me to Robert who said he was Leo's supervisor. Who knows. Roberts direct number is 858-460-7270 ext 437 or so he said.
After explaining EVERYTHING yet again, Robert told us the price we locked in "might" have been a promotional price??? MIGHT?? Really do not care about your internal processes. We locked in a price, got charged for the price, paid for everything but Robert said we would now need to pay him ANOTHER $210 EACH! Another $420?? WHAT???? That is double the price we locked in. He said that the website may have been wrong? WHAT??? Then that is Expedia's problem, not mine. Double the price because YOU made a mistake. WOW?? I locked in a price and paid that price....total fraud and the old bate and switch routine that we will report elsewhere. Told him to just cancel everything and we would start over. For this privilege of cancelling, Leo wanted to charge us nearly $300??? TO CANCEL A FLIGHT THEY CAN NOT FIGURE OUT AND WANTED TO CHARGE US DOUBLE. THIEF! Charge us twice what was advertised or charge us $300 to not have to deal with them anymore? Either way they get paid a lot more for their errors??? Absolute scam and den of thieves.
Misleading flight cancellation information and zero transparency
I do not recommend expedia for anything because of a lack of transparency and misleading information around cancellations. I purchased a flight that clearly stated that cancellations were applicable and that a cancellation fee by singapore air would be applied (it did not state no-cancellations/non-refundable like other flights did, this info that was displayed to me was verified by a supervisor). I reviewed singapore air’s range of cancellation fees and it was max $400 and on some flights it clearly states non-refundable. The expedia app can tell you when cancellations are not allowed, meaning non-refundable ticket, but it can also tell you cancellations are allowed with a cancellation fee when it is actually booking you a non-refundable ticket and if you cancel, you lose the entire fare and may only get some taxes back. The communication is misleading and not transparent enough about what you are actually buying from the airline. It could easily be their way to make you think you are getting a good deal for a flexible flight when they could be deliberately hiding the fact that you are not getting the flexibility as advertised. I disputed this with various customer service staff (one of which panicked and hung up on me) only to eventually be told, sorry you have a non refundable ticket, our hands are tied. They took no responsibility for providing misleading information. They offered no compensation for selling me the wrong product (I did not want a non-refundable flight) and they were not willing to even escalate this to someone to go and fix this misinformation/false-advertising on the app which is why you should not use this because you have no idea what you are even paying for.
