What a nightmare!!

What a nightmare!!! Arrived at the airport and had to walk miles up escalators down steps along corridors then on a train before finally reaching bag reclaim. 5000 steps!!! On return we had to book in on a machine which would not accept passport and all details had to be added manually. My husband has impaired mobility no help or assistance from anyone. Then flight delayed 2 hours and had to negotiate 6 flights of stairs to be bussed to the plane. There was a lift but the attendant said she couldn't take him as she was the only one on duty!. Also aircraft had to be boarded from steps. Food outrageously expensive.
Hope I never go again.

This airport is perhaps the worst…

This airport is perhaps the worst laid-out with no thought for tired passengers..It's size makes transit a logistical nightmare. Get off an 11.5hr flight, then have to go through security again, walk 40 mins using stairs, lifts, escalators and trains to get to your gate, settle down to wait for it to open and it's changed without any announcement. Then it's a repeat process back the way you've come. No ground staff, just empty corridors. If you have a short transit time, beware! Lufthansa also seems to cancel a lot of flights and passengers can be left stranded overnight. Not a great example of German engineering. Too big and too complicated. They should have copied Bangkok's main airport. Mostly on one level, a dream to use by comparison. Not impressed.

MUNICH - Worst Passport Security

EasyJet Munich to Edinburgh

The Passport Security is the worst I have ever experienced. It's not the greatest when arriving, only two booths open with at least 3 to 4 plane arrivals, but beyond appalling when leaving. I have traveled to Munich 3 times previously.

If you are a UK Passport holder make sure to allow a minimum of 1.5hours to go through the Passport Security. Factor in Bag check in and general security too. Total time 3hrs minimum before flight - YOU WILL NOT MAKE YOUR FLIGHT if you choose to leave it any later.

Today the cues descended in to complete disorder. People broke through the system and lines and crowded both the booths. We are talking approx. 200 people, pushing and shouting - no cue, lots of people very upset, crying children and old frail passengers confused and scared. It was complete chaos. Only 2 counters were open for three plane departures, due to leave at the same time.

Either the Border Force for Munich are seriously under resourced or are very disorganised. Either way, they are consistent with their ability to poorly handle Non EU arrivals and departures, (departures being the worst).

As you will see I am not the only post making this comment, please review all the other posts and threads. Needless to say the ONLY reason I made my flight was because it has been delayed and I had walk on baggage. I would never have made it otherwise.

Border Force needs better experienced staff that are efficient and more booths need manned to accommodate arrivals and departures - AT ALL TIMES.

Most inefficient airport

Passport control is the slowest in Europe, staff leave their booths before the replacement has arrived.
We were sat on the tarmac for well over an hour waiting for baggage handlers to unload the airplane from the in-coming passengers before loading the plane with the out-going flights luggage. Shockingly mis-managed airport!

Careful - parking fee scams

Careful – their parking services are borderline scammy.
Modern airports elsewhere in the world provide free park-and-call lots away from the terminal in order to avoid overcrowding the kiss and fly lanes. That makes sense.
Munich Airport choose a different, I think rather shameful, approach. They charge horrendous parking fees which results in people parking their cars outside the terminal on the road to the airport. That is until the cops show up. It's designed for maximum profit, not for a pleasant airport experience. The "grace period" is 5 minutes when you first enter their structure, which is barely enough time to loop around (not mentioning that you're usually loading or unloading luggage). If you enter again there's no grace period anymore at all, of which they don't warn you though. So looping around isn't even an option – in a one way street system!
Shame on the designers of this parking system. Even the US, international symbol of hardcore capitalism, isn't this greedy when it comes to their airports.
Whenever possibly I fly from Zürich these days.

Munich airport is the least efficient

Munich airport is the least efficient, most poorly designed airport I've had the displeasure of travelling through.
The staff are, at best, indifferent, at worst, belligerent.
It took almost two hours to get through the nightmarish, Byzantine labyrinth of weird tunnels, staircases and baggage checks. The whole time staff were largely just standing around picking their noses as people tried to work out for themselves what lines to stand in or what procedure to follow.
The city of Munich should be ashamed at this disgrace of an airport. Third world stuff.

Terrible checkin

Terrible checkin. Long que, slow processing. Approximately 1 1/2 hrs.
Security que is worse. We arrived at the airport on time and only just made the flight. I think if we didn't check a bag they would have closed the gate.

Worst airport! Long immigration lines and lost baggage!

This is one of the worst airports that I have ever been to. Most of the times, there is a long line in the immigration counters for All passports. There are only 3 counters available for all passports where 1 counter is empty. While waiting for the immigration for about 2 hours (with no access to any toilet), we also lost our check in bag. We reported the airport lost and found office and luckily got it the next day.

If you need to use terminal 1 and or…

If you need to use terminal 1 and or not in eu, the passport control is absolutely awful. It's like something from 70's. It's a 400m walk to end of terminal, thne 400m back to gates. Usually only 2 passport booths are manned for many, often longhau,l flights. In my opinion this is to encourage customers to choose luftansa (t2) which much more is efficient . Shame on lufthansa and muc airport authorities.

the situation with baggage in MUC is out of control. They do not have enough personell for loading - assuming they do not want to pay more.
I fly in there regularly and I very regularly wait for over 1 hour, sometimes longer...
It's devastating and it's been like this since the pandemic. DO NOT CHECK IN ANY LUGGAGE IF YOU NEED IT IN TIME.

Munich airport is the worst i know

I fly quite a lot, all over the world, lucky me! I live in Munich, so Munich Airport is my home airport. Sadly it it also consistently the worst airport i know. The main issues are the incredibly slow security checks when departing & arriving and the slow baggage delivery when arriving. It is easy to see how the security checks could be massively speeded up with methods used in most other airports plus urgently needed staff training & motivation. It is clear that the security staff at Munich airport consider it a duty to slow the flow of passengers passing through, and not to miss an opportunity to be rude.

Maze of an airport with some unhelpful staff

This airport is a nightmare to navigate for departures (arrivals was a good experience though). For departures, flew with BA and was bounced between different zones and floors as security sections weren't open near check-in desks. No signs as to where to go for security, and ended up following a fellow passenger who had an airport assistant.
After security, we made an error trying to find our gate (not helped by unhelpful staff who laughed and then refused to talk to us as we did not understand German) and we ended up going out an exit and had to do security and passport control again. This seemed ridiculous (I'm fairly well travelled and have never experienced this) but none of the security staff (who were nice and polite) seemed surprised about it, and passport control did not question us returning within fifteen minutes. In terms of amenities, there were very few shops and food places on departures side, but the shop staff were polite and friendly. Toilets were clean.
Generally just a weird experience for a modern city centre airport.

Fly without cry, Its a very disappointing service as you loose your money and your blocked item. 28/12/23 a personal item was blocked during airport control and security suggested the specific service I did the requested procedure and payment but the item never received so far. Parallel they cheating me answering on my messages without giving any clear answer about when I finally receive the item.

Very poor - avoid if you can

I can only echo previous comments - arrived Zone C, trudged through to BA check in in Zone A, back to Zone C for security, back to Zone A for passport control which had only two agents checking passports and so a massive queue. An hour and a half later then its another walk back to Zone C for BA departure gate. Food options limited and expensive - get a sandwich from bakery at Munich Ost or Rosenheim Bhf if you're coming in that way.

The worst airport I have ever been to

Munich airport has never been a pleasant experience - I used to fly in and out every week, many years ago. Like most regional German airports, it always struck me as a vanity project, a sprawling complex that is mostly largely deserted, far more expansive than it needs to be for the passenger numbers it handles, with very poor shopping and eating facilities. Let me tell you, it has gotten worse.

Flying BA back to London, what used to happen is you would go through security next to the Zone A check-in desk on the ground floor. Once airside, non-Schengen passengers would then go through passport control to get to their gate, in a walled off section of the terminal.

Today, the taxi still drops you at Zone A, but the security control point is closed off and deserted, apparently no longer in use. Instead, you must walk some distance, involving going outside the building, to get to Zone C, where the ground floor security control point is also closed down, as is that in Zone B. There are no staff to explain this, and signage is poor to non-existent. All passengers are funnelled upstairs into what originally must have been a secondary overspill security point, which will probably only have two working X-ray machines and one sub-millimetre scanner. The staff are very slow. The process is very slow. There is no sense of urgency. Don’t be in a hurry.

Once through security, non-EU / other favoured nation passport holders must trek down a very long corridor all the way back to Zone A to get to passport control. Then once finally in the departure area they must walk all the way back to Zone C through a completely deserted airport to reach the BA departure gate.

At this point, assuming fog hasn’t delayed your flight because the Bavarian authorities cleverly built Munich airport in a depression that is prone to severe fog in the winter, BA will announce that, even though they have encouraged you to travel only with cabin bags by making you pay extra to check bags in, the plane they have laid on is a sardine can (ie an Airbus A320), and is full, so all those cabin bags have to in fact be checked in at the gate, adding half an hour waiting time at the other end.

Make sure you eat before you go to the airport because once airside the food options are effectively crisps and chocolate, and your in-flight “meal” will - if you are lucky - consist of a small chocolate biscuit and an undersized bottle of water.

Avoid flying out of Munich airport like the plague, is my advice. And don’t even get me started on the brusque immigration officials who greet you on first arriving.

This last trip has convinced me Germany is simply trying to make life as inconvenient as possible for British visitors, presumably as some kind of ongoing punishment for Brexit. I won’t be going back if I can help it, ever.
