This is by far the best agency I have been in touch with. The staff is brilliant - professional, human and caring. The payroll reaches out to you if you missed a step and replies to emails when you need them. Everybody is a step ahead of you and supporting. The schools I have been offered so far are brilliant with good behaviour routines and organisation.

Unreliable agency
❌ ⚠️ Step Teachers is like 3rd world country labour agencies that have no workers protection & must be the worst employment agency. DO NOT REGISTER. You may just find yourself jobless, suddenly in middle of pre-agreed contracts which got cancelled last minute. Step Teachers exploit jobseekers' good faith and trust by not clearly warning them of risky job contracts that can be cancelled at any time putting their career in jeopardy - no insurance payouts, no monetary compensation, no alternative cover work if a placement is suddenly cancelled. They cunningly 'sold' me a full-time long-term role with exaggerated benefits without verbally specifying that schools can anytime cancel job contracts. I fell for the trap. Step Teachers has not supported me. It is an employment agency's absolute professional obligation to CLEARLY WARN every applicant of these critical RISKS - Step failed to do this. On my starting week, Step told me the contract is suddenly cancelled. Even worse is after they made me unemployed & put me in this predicament they didn't show remorse, accountabilities nor find immediate cover work for remaining 4 months. I made approx 10 phone calls, multiple emails and voice messages to Step Teachers agents for help but they didn't respond until the 3rd week of my unemployment. Seems like Step Teachers mislead job seekers & were really dodgy & unprofessional with me.

We would, however, like to clarify that Step Teachers operates as a supply teaching agency and does not employ teachers directly on school contracts. As a supply agency, placements are arranged based on schools’ requirements and availability, and assignments can therefore change or come to an end in line with those requirements from our partners.
We have also been unable to identify a registration or placement matching the details provided in this review. We take concerns such as these seriously and would very much like the opportunity to investigate the circumstances described.

Unfair Charging and Failure to Provide Work
I registered with Step Teachers in February 2026 under the clear premise that I would be supplied with school work. I was required to pay an upfront fee of £65.00 for a new DBS certificate through them to proceed.
It has now been nearly five months, and the agency has failed to provide me with a single hour of work. When I contacted them to request a refund for the DBS fee since the service they promised (employment) was never rendered, they officially refused, stating that work is "never guaranteed" despite taking my money.
They pocketed £65.00 from a job-seeker without providing any employment. I have had to secure work directly with a Local Authority school on my own. I have reported their charging practices to the Employment Agency Standards Inspectorate and opened a dispute with my bank, but they did not assisted me further and the matter remains unresolved from my perspective.Avoid this agency if you expect actual communication and employment opportunities. EDIT: As reply to my feedback - The agency tries to whitewash its image and present itself in a better light as being very open to dialogue, and the comment below attests to that. But the truth is, their team NEVER takes the time to communicate with a job candidate once they've taken your money.

We understand your frustration at not securing work through us during this period. While we cannot guarantee assignments, we appreciate that this can still be disappointing, particularly when you were hoping to find work through the agency.
We would also like to clarify that the DBS fee is not a fee that Step Teachers pockets or profits from. The £65 payment covers the cost of the DBS check and associated processing, and the fee is passed on for that purpose. It is a separate cost from securing employment and is not a charge for providing work.
We’re pleased to hear that you have since secured work directly with a Local Authority school and wish you every success in your new role. We would, of course, be happy to discuss your individual circumstances further if you would like to contact our team directly.

I only have positive things to say! The staff I have worked with are supportive, friendly and proactive with a fair and transparent payment structure. I was recommended by teachers and I agree with their commendations!

I would highly recommend Joe as a teacher consultant. He is professional, thorough, and extremely supportive throughout the application process. Joe is always available to answer questions and provide guidance by email, text or phone, making the process much easier to navigate. He provides clear information about the documents required and offers helpful alternatives when certain documents are difficult to obtain. His attention to detail and knowledge ensure that you understand exactly what is needed at each stage. He has an approachable and friendly manner which makes it easy to ask questions and seek support when needed.

Step Teachers: Lack of professional standards around consent and communication cannot be taken for granted.
I registered with Step Teachers to do supply teaching and spent over five weeks going through their process, attending their offices, completing training, submitting all documentation, and providing references from the outset. My CV made my employment history entirely clear: my last school-based teaching role was in 2018, after which I worked for over five years in education roles within local authority statutory services. This was visible to them from day one.
After five weeks, interviews, and considerable time and effort invested, a compliance officer requested a third reference specifically from a teaching role, a requirement that was never communicated at registration, despite them holding my CV throughout. Anyone reading that CV could see that a recent school-based teaching reference was not straightforward. That conversation should have happened in week one, not week five.
More seriously: I was sent a consent request to contact an old teaching reference and had not yet responded when they contacted that person anyway, approximately thirty minutes after sending me the email. Contacting a referee without consent is not acceptable practice.
I would not recommend Step Teachers to experienced teachers whose career has included roles outside classroom teaching. Your time will not be respected and basic professional standards around consent and communication cannot be taken for granted.

Supportive, Professional, and Led to a Permanent Role
I had an excellent experience working with Step Teachers. From the very beginning, they were incredibly supportive, professional, and genuinely invested in helping me find the right roles. Communication was always clear and timely, and I always felt well-informed and prepared for each placement.

Step Teachers has been a great stepping…
Step Teachers has been a great stepping stone for me into education. After doing a level 1 TA course through my local job centre I went to step teachers with little to no experience. They got me supply work and helped me through everything. A year and a half later I've got a full time, permanent role in a local school. I wouldnt of been able to do it without step teachers.
It's great to be able to try out different schools, year groups etc.

Working for step teachers
I have thoroughly enjoyed working for step teachers. 4 years on and still able to get work and know that I am always supported. Rachel(plymouth) has been brilliant to work for, not only has she made sure i have had shifts, and always keeping me updated with my positive feedback from schools, she has been someone that I can also talk to and confide in.
