I had a very poor experience at the Whitley Bay store, and I feel it’s important to share it—especially as the business has now moved to another town. Hopefully, this review will help other customers avoid the same issues. In short, I found the owner to be untrustworthy.

I took a laptop in for a screen replacement. The screen was damaged but still usable, with blurring on one side. I later received a call explaining that the screen would need replacing and asking whether I had house insurance, as it was supposedly a touchscreen and therefore expensive. I questioned this, as I was certain the laptop was not touchscreen. However, the owner insisted he had removed the screen and confirmed it was touchscreen due to there being two ribbon cables—one for display and one for touch. Unconvinced, I asked to collect the laptop and take it elsewhere.

I was told I would receive a call when the laptop was ready for collection, but this never happened. When I returned to the store, I was told they had attempted to call three times, despite there being no missed calls on my phone. Although confused, I initially gave them the benefit of the doubt. However, once home, I discovered the laptop now had no display at all. I returned to the store again, and when connected to an external display, it was clear the issue was with the screen—damage that had occurred while the laptop was in their care.

At this point, they offered to replace the screen without charging for labour. However, I had lost all confidence in their ability to order the correct screen or carry out the repair competently.

The laptop was later repaired by Monkseaton Computers with no issues whatsoever. As expected, the screen was not touchscreen and never had been. I was informed that the damage had been caused by an unsuccessful attempt to remove the screen, which was evident from the glue still being intact at the bottom. The old screen was returned to me with only one ribbon cable, confirming BS from the owner.

Based on this experience, I would strongly advise against using this store for repairs.

This company is No longer trading in Whitley Bay! Contrary to what is stated. They did a runner to Morpeth (apparently) some time ago, along with people's goods.

As previously stated in this site, mine went in for a screen glitch.. MONTHS later, after numerous emails and 📞 calls and closing the w/Bay store they still have my laptop!

They damaged a port, then somehow fried the Hard drive. Pretty good going, just for replacing a screen and cable.

To date Dec '25, MONTHS LATER,

I still have no laptop nor do they answer my communication. I have received NO appolagies, compensation or anything else...

Never, ever use this unreliable, non trustworthy company. If possible I would give them Minus *Red* stars, only hot one so review can be posted!

You will not be aware of our recent circumstances, so let me outline them.

I have been in and out of hospital with a serious health issue, the additional stress of being self-employed has not helped. Added to that, I chose to close our Whitley Bay store to safeguard our staff after a shoplifter threatened one of the team. The closure was closely followed by a burglary, thankfully all three suspects were apprehended and are progressing through the legal system. These are the main reasons I have not replied sooner.

When I decided to close the store, we transferred all customer owned equipment to our Morpeth office for safekeeping and resolution. This has been hampered by my absence; this is also one of the reasons there was a delay in notifying our customers. That said, our phones are working perfectly normally as other customers have noted and since retrieved their repaired laptops and equipment.

In terms of your daughter’s laptop:-

- It came to us for a screen repair, this was completed, the machine tested and returned to yourselves.
- At some point afterwards, it was returned to us after the USB ports apparently didn’t work.
- The machine was tested when it came back and it was determined that the USB-A ports do not work, this is completely unrelated to the screen change and as a result is a new fault, which at first glance looked like a motherboard issue.
- Permission was sought and obtained to wipe the machines SSD and reinstall Windows to rule this out as a source of the issue. This did rule out the software as a cause of the issue, therefore it is a motherboard issue.
- We have tested the USB-C port, this is working normally, so the solution/workaround is to use a USB-C hub, which I am happy to provide free of charge. This will provide two USB-A ports for use as normal.

Please provide a full postal address for the return of the machine, I will then arrange DPD to deliver it for you. I will then consider the matter closed.

Went above and beyond to accommodate my urgent request

I needed an item super urgently and Ken went out of his way to make this possible. This was my first time using Canny Clever, and I am truly impressed.

Really friendly and went above and beyond to accommodate my request. Thank you Ken, and to the team for this!

Highly recommend and will be returning again!

Avoid !

Shop looks great. Young lads who work there try there best with what they have and what they are given (they get the star) unfortunately they are given no responsibility and no communication by the owner. I ordered 2 parts (which I could have got myself in 2 days but wanted fitting to be safe) was told 1 week. 1 week later supplier issue so reorder with another supplier. Another week later no parts and no idea. The lads have no control or knowledge of orders and payments and are left in the dark by an owner who is never there, never available and can't manage. The lads tried to make professional guesses but ultimately didn't know and couldn't get hold of the manager as he wasn't there and wasn't answering. This went on for days so order cancelled, I did collar the owner when I cancelled as he was hiding upstairs and happened to ring down to see why I was still in the shop, the card machine had ran out of charge so had to wait 10 minutes. He explained he had been busy at the vets and another day at the solicitors, its just not good enough! Not happy. Total waste of time and would never use again. To the lads... get out he's taking the mick and making yous look stupid.

Great first impression but thereafter a very disappointing experience with very poor to non-existent customer service. Could not in good conscience recommend for others.

Always great service!

Popped in Saturday to get pricing for a larger screen laptop (am vision impaired so 14" won't do).
Surprised by lower than expected cost so bought there and then. Way quicker than @mzn and great personal service - they even offered to carry it back to my home nearby.
Who else would do that?

Not very canny, not very clever

Ordered a motherboard but payment despite going through with payment provider did not show up in account. Contacted Ken (the manager) and when he eventually got back to me he said he would look into it and get back to me the same day.
He didn't, so I emailed for an update and was told that my shipping address is "blacklisted" by the payment provider so they never passed through the order.
Never had any such issues with any other company I have ordered computer parts from.
So my order was cancelled, no option to ship to different address or billing address.
Not very canny, not very clever

Online fraud costs or industry millions of pounds each year, some online stores are able to absorb these costs, while smaller independents like ourselves can’t. We employ card payment companies to protect us from these threats, particularly as we recently had over £250k of attempted fraudulent orders. I can’t speak as to the anti-fraud policies of other companies or card processing companies.

In this case, we didn’t see your order because it was blocked by our card payment provider, I only became aware when you reached out to us… It was on our system as an incomplete order.

Even then, I did say I would investigate and get back to you… I had intended to reach out to you this afternoon because I heard from our payment provider this morning after I contacted them yesterday. You called the office first and spoke to one of the admin team before I got a chance to call, I have been out most of the day.

In this case, the address you requested we ship to appears on a blacklist and our card payment provider took the view that they should reject the transaction. It was subsequently refunded. The address you requested shipping to is a freight forwarder near Heathrow.

The payment provider also noted your UK billing address but the IP address used in the transaction is registered to Vodafone Quatar. Since it was our card payment provider that blocked the transaction, we have no options to change the delivery address.

In essence, this wasn’t a clear-cut transaction as you suggest, but on balance, we have to take the advice of our card payment providers…

Your earlier email refers to it as an ‘excuse’, I share your frustration as this has taken far more time than I would have liked. I can assure you it isn’t an ‘excuse’ as you it it, it’s fact.

I have always had a positive experience…

I have always had a positive experience of this company. They always go above and beyond in their Whitley Bay store. The colleagues are helpful, knowledgeable and go above and beyond. I am really impressed with the technology and help I received with my most recent purchase. I would definitely recommend Canny Clever IT! They’re so kind to children too - an amazing Santa to visit over Christmas (with free mulled wine and mince pies for the adults) and sweets given out to children throughout the year. So thoughtful and considerate. A great company! Thank you again.

Excellent Customer Service

Having made a purchase today, the customer service I received was excellent. Very friendly, very knowledgeable and all round a very pleasant experience. Would highly recommend.

Fantastic experience from start to finish!!

After ordering parts from Amazon for a young person in our care for xmas we realised that some of the items were faulty. Due to it being over the festive period it was too late to return the items to Amazon I time for Xmas. I spoke to Ken @ Canny Clever who invited us in to look over the build and diagnose the issue. The experience from start to finish was nothing short of amazing with us receiving A+++++ service. Canny Clever diagnosed the issue and fixed the computer within the hour and made Xmas for us! Highly recommend using Canny Clever for all of your IT needs!!

Amazing service, highly recommend

Upgraded my PC, ordered parts through them, parts came quickly and booking time slots for the upgrade were flexible. They did an amazing job, and it works perfectly. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for any IT servicing.

took my laptop in to get fixed, was told it would be 3 days maximum, it wasn't, when i called to follow up, i was told it would be a further 2/3 days, i told them i would collect it and take it elsewhere, miraculously 5 mins later i got a call to say it was fixed and i could collect it. brought it home and absolutely nothing has been done, i have exactly the same issues i took it in with and im £55 worse off, wont be using again, poor service, poor communication, unprofessional, don't bother

When your machine came into us for repair, the fault description was 'Screen is blank/Black'. This was looked at over the course of a week, taking longer than usual to make sure the issue was dealt with.

The issue was actually corrected at the end of last week and diagnosed as an issue with the machine being too hot etc, which was traced to a fan. The fan was cleaned and the machine ran perfectly for 24 hours.

It was returned to you this morning, fully functional as I myself had only just switched it on and tested as part of our QC process.

There was confusion when you called early today, the colleague you spoke to couldn't access all the notes on your case, so provided as much detail as he was able, when he came and spoke to me about your call, I pointed him to the right place and you were called straight back to say it had in fact been repaired. My apologies for that small confusion.

You called back and before we could offer the opportunity to resolve any further issues, you stated you were going to leave a poor review. One of my colleagues called you straight back and offered to look at the machine again, but you stated you had already made arrangements to have it looked at elsewhere.

As with all things technical, occasionally things do go wrong, in this case, I am certain that we provided a good service, although took a little longer than usual to repair the issue, given the opportunity, we would have dealt with your latest issue, which on the face of it seems to be something completely different.

Canny great at Canny Clever Whitley By.

I went for the first time to Canny Clever for my printer to be fixed but it was so old the parts were not available. I had really good advice on what printer would suit my needs. (. Just for me and needing to print from time to time. They ordered it and let me know when it was in. Had advised me on low cost printer for ink cartridges and where to get them. Everyone from Ken the general manager who helped me pick my printer to the assistants were a great team. Ben one of the assistants was patient and very helpful with questions relating to my MacBook Air. He even put my new phone cover and screen protector on the new iPhone case that Ken had put in gif mr as part of my order. All in all a great experience and would shop there again as they are very knowledgeable.

Good service - no sales hype

I needed a fast laptop for video work. The knowledgeable chap pointed me towards a high spec machine with a speedy graphics card to which I agreed. The price was a shade over that of a similar Internet purchase, but I was happy to support a bricks & mortar firm.

My negative experience was the delay of supply. I ordered and paid on a Saturday with a promise that the machine would be ready for collection the following Tuesday. However, I had to wait until Friday to pick it up.

One of the clever people set up the machine for me, listening to my requirements.

The machine, an ASUS FX506HF, works a treat. After installing my suite of video and photo software, I found that the render time was reduced from my previous machine. That is what I wanted. Problem solved, thanks Canny Clever.

Had a great experience in store. Staff, especially Joseph, was more than helpful.
This was the second time I've used Canny Clever. No different to my first visit.
Patience of a saint.
Even received free sweets for my journey home.

Avoid at all cost!

Good at talking you into buying their stuff but once you have, the service is the worst if you are lucky that they show up when they say they will.

All they are good for is taking advantage of those who genuinely want computers or help. Avoid at all costs!!

Hi SK, Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review, however, this has left out team annoyed and frustrated that there has been no notification of an issue or any attempt to resolve it.

Your CIC ordered two computers, asked for delivery on a non-working day, which we did. We sent a technician to your offices on a Saturday afternoon as requested, who then installed the machines at NO ADDITIONAL COST, you purchased the machines only. No support contract or installation was paid for, we provided this as a goodwill gesture to a local CIC, we support many other CIC’s and registered charities with free services.

There was a complication whereby the WiFi had not been added to the machines, this was a simple oversight on our part and was remedied a few working days later when we again delivered the required USB Dongles to your office reception. These are plug and play so would not need any expert installation.

The only potential issue we are aware of is that you wanted Microsoft Office software, we suggested that as a CIC you may be eligible for discounted or free software from Microsoft, this is solely at the discretion of Microsoft, it is not our decision. This free software requires a registration with Microsoft, we offered to assist with this, but are unable to do this on your behalf because of the legalities and the personal information required which we do not possess.
To suggest that “All they are good for is taking advantage of those who genuinely want computers or help” is absurd and quite frankly has really annoyed myself and others in the team, particularly those that you have been rude to on the phone while they have tried to assist you on at least two occasions that I am aware of.

I am still happy to resolve whatever the perceived issue is, but any contact must be civil and in the spirit of resolving any issue you may have. Feel free to email me using the address you have for us.

Four personal visits to Canny IT resulted in a promised after sales visit to assess an internet access problem which never happened.
I have no confidence in their after sales service whatsoever and am now forced to seek an alternative IT expert.

Hi Clive, I have only just been alerted by TrustPilot to this review... Apologies this seems to have taken longer than I would have hoped, I will take that up with TrustPilot.

I am a little concerned that you have apparently needed to make four visits after purchasing an item, I don't have any record of a purchase around this date, or is this an issue with the PC you previously purchased? We don't generally offer home-visits.

This is the third time I’ve used Canny…

This is the third time I’ve used Canny Clever. Latterly it was 7 days ago for a 256gb memory stick to work as external storage with my Blink Camera system as the free storage plan is running out. I was told what I needed and how to format it. I highly recommend this shop and it’s very helpful staff.
