Family history research is a little less straightforward in Ireland than elsewhere.
The 1901 & 1911 census have been provided free of charge by our National Archives and although linked to from other sites is a separate service, therefore we do not replicate this information on our site. You will find the census records here:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
For people that were not alive to be recorded in the 1901 & 1911 the search can be a bit more challenging as it depends on the documentation that has survived and also what has been digitised. For example all census returns for the 19th Century were destroyed by fire in 1922.
Civil registration of births, marriages and deaths was introduced into Ireland in 1864 (civil registration of non-Catholic marriages began in 1845). The index to civil registration is available on our website. Full birth, marriage and death records can be ordered from the General Register Office of Ireland using the information found in the index - http://www.groireland.ie/
Local parish records, for the most part, remain in the local parish churches. These usually start around 1820 but vary greatly from parish to parish.
Your family could be found in our census substitutes, directories, or our the Land and Estate records - if you know a townland / parish to direct your search this will help greatly.
Please note that we abide by Irish data protection laws and therefore have very few full records dating to after 1913.

When I click on an item I'd like to see…
When I click on an item I'd like to see a star, tick or something else to say that I've already looked at the item or not. I know that when I bring up a result for a large number of items that it shows a tick mark when I've seen, printed or downloaded the item. This saves me having to look at it again unless I want to.
