Over priced and not very tasty

I have tried 5 of the meals and liked ONE. Most of them are very small portions for the price. I can buy better quality and better tasting meals at the grocery store. The vegan chicken was rubbery with very little pasta. The “spaghetti and meatballs” meal was nothing to write home about….. etc etc. I am disappointed I spent so much money on food that I have to force myself to eat.

Expired Items

Paid $148 for 7 smoothies, 7 bowls and 5 shots. All items arrived thawed and at least 3 were expired. It’s concerning that they don’t check dates before sending to their customers. Packaging was a mess and all thrown together. Customer service did respond quickly which I appreciated and offered a credit on my next box, but I don’t want another box. To me first impressions are everything. This was a splurge and if there are problems right off the top, I can imagine they will only continue. So no thanks. After a few emails back and forth, I’m told they are refunding the amount spent on the expired items. Also worth mentioning is that I asked 3 times where I could find the expiration date in the bowls bc there’s not one. They refused to answer that question all 3 times. Instead they wrote and said how not to be put off by the expired product dates and that many people miss out on good food because they’re turned off that it’s EXPIRED. What the heck!!??? Won’t be ordering again!!!

The smoothies are complete garbage

The smoothies are complete garbage. At best, they taste like various baby foods mixed with bananas. If you like smoothies with the consistency of curdled milk and the taste of baby food... Then go ahead.

The bowls are even more hot and miss. Lemon Wild Rice & Broccoli smells exactly like it tastes... A 1 star hotel room with hints of smoke, funk, and poop.

This food may be healthy, but you're better off eating grass next to a dumpster.

Don't buy the fake reviews listed on their website.

Constant downhill spiral

This company is progressively going downhill. 3 out of the last 4 deliveries I have received arrived hot and without ice. I contacted customer support every single time, and they assured it would be fixed. Spoiler alert: it never was. And the only thing they did to rectify the situation was give me store credit for the THREE WARM BOXES of wasted meals. The one box I received last month that wasn't warm, ended up having a huge hair in one of the smoothies that I almost swallowed. Disgusting, terrible quality control, and don't care about their customers at all. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Company is progressively going downhill.

Arrives warm. Shipping too slow.

Got my first order last week. Arrived hot. Got my second order today. Arrived warm. All had to be trashed. I don’t understand why it’s not being overnighted and instead, shipped and taking 3 days! Complete waste of time and money. Don’t recommend at all!

I relied heavily on Splendid Spoon from late 2018 to early 2020, when I spent busy, 10-hr days in the office. The soups were delicious and healthy, and I ate them for breakfast and lunch.

I ordered again recently and was disappointed in the flavors. Spices, herbs, and heat were missing. Some of my favorites were noticeably less flavorful, while other favorites were dropped from the menu. I liked this service because of the bold and unique offerings, but they’ve really gone in a bland direction over the past 2 years.

The food is hard to get through now unless you season it yourself with hot sauce, herbs, and spices.

Bland and Expensive

The timeframe to edit your order or skip is very small so it’s easy to miss. Makes it inflexible in many regards, especially if you get busy or travel.

The food tastes like it was frozen before shipping. Many of the meals have the little ice crystal which waters down the meal when you microwave it or cook it on the stove.

Splendid Spoon has managed to make exciting and flavorful food incredibly bland. I found myself adding spices or hot sauces to every dish. Some of the dishes were even hard to eat. Many of their dishes are soup. I don’t know about anyone else, but soup starts to get real old after a while.

Meals are low calorie. If you plan to utilize their breakfast, lunch, and dinner plan, it only provides 900-1100 calories roughly. It depends on the meals you choose for the day. Even if you are tying to lose weight, you should never eat that low calorie. You ultimately end up needing to grocery shop to get more calories, which really takes away from the convenience of meal delivery.

Customer service isn’t very helpful and honestly they are kind of condescending.

It’s hard to find places where you can leave reviews of Splendid Spoon, and the only reviews on their website are all four or five starts. I dislike the lack of transparency on their end.

Lastly, for what you get, this is incredibly expensive.The lack of convenience, flavor, and service with this meal plan is really not worth the price tag. One smoothy is $9.50/$10.00 and many lack good flavor.

Overall, I was really looking forward to this meal delivery service, so this was a big bummer. I accidentally allowed my subscription to roll over one more week and I’m actually not looking forward to having to eat this food. Ha, I know that sounds dramatic, but it just isn’t good.

Update 5/17/2022:
I’ve been able to try more of the food and wanted to share reviews for individual items if it helps anyone.

Smoothies:
-carrot ginger chai: this was the best flavored smoothie I had. Tasted strongly of ginger and then chia. Not bad and texture was smooth and consistent.
-dragon fruit berry: could not finish this smoothie. Had odd chunky bits that were almost kind of slimy. Very tart flavor and could really taste the pea protien.
-mango guava: again, weird texture similar to the dragon fruit one. The banana flavor came through more than I’d like and the mango flavor lacked completely.
-orange hibiscus: I hated this one at first and made a face when I had the first sip. It did grow on me though the more I could taste the orange juice. Texture was okay.
-raspberry cacao: again the texture is an issue. Definitely has a slimy banana taste and you can’t really taste raspberry or cacao.

Grain bowls and soups:
-brown rice taco bowl: this is more a veggie bowl as it lacks rice. Flavor isn’t really taco, but it’s got a small kick and isn’t terrible. Veg is a bit soggy though. I do like the pumpkin seeds.
-green tomatillo chili soup: I thought this was one of their better dishes. It is pretty tart though and I ended up not finishing it.
-kimchi fried quinoa grain bowl: this one is mostly quinoa. Both the tofu and the kimchi are soggy. Kimchi and some of the other ingredient in this dish are usually really flavorful, but they’ve managed to miss the mark and this dish is just bland. It kinda mad me nausea too and again I couldn’t finish it.
-cauliflower potato chowder: smelled incredible, but the texture and flavors weren’t there. The soup was very watery and the potato and cauliflower mixed in were very grainy. As a General comment, when you make soup, you should really commit to the texture wether it’s creamy or chunky. Splendid just misses the mark on this and it results in an unpleasant texture.
-garden minestrone soup: this is one of my least favorite. The ingredients taste frozen and kinda pasty/dry. The flavor is bland and overall just not good.
-butternut turmeric soup: flavor was pleasant but very light and bland. There were about three tiny butternut chunks and otherwise the rest is pretty liquidy. A bisque or creamy type texture would have been a lot better here. Or Splendid needed to commit to more butternut chunks.

Some other things to note: Splendid does not do refunds, only store credit, so if you dislike what you get, they just credit you to buy more of what you disliked.

Additionally, I know they claim to be “eco conscious” but the amount of packaging and carbon footprint from shipping is no small thing. Doesn’t feel very eco at the end of the day and my recycle bin filled up real quick.

I doubt it's worth it

My first order was "skipped" through no fault of my own -- why on Earth would I skip my very first order? They blamed me anyway.
Finally a week later I received my first order. One grain bowl is completely cracked so there is plastic and little frozen bits of broccoli and rice all over the box. One of the smoothies is leaking from somewhere, I just can't determine where.
This was packaged horribly, with zero regard to how it might have been handled in transit.
In the interim, I received an email "So sorry, we have to raise our prices" -- I canceled my subscription right then and there. I would never use Splendid Spoon again; there are many companies out there who care enough to package things right and not make the customer suffer for their defects.

Sending unauthorized food and charging my credit card

I put my food on hold for a month and 2 times they sent me food and charged my card. I asked for a refund and they just gave me a credit. I also referred 2 friends and used the promo code and was told that I would get $25 credit and I did not. I had to e mail them to explain and then when you contact them, it appears to go to a general mailbox and different people respond with different answers. Too bad because I do enjoy the food. No phone number to talk in person for customer service so it is a pain to write to them and wait 24 to 48 hours for them to get back to you. I probably will have to file a complaint wit my credit card to get my money back. I thought getting the food was going to make my life less complicated but it has made it more complicated.

Not for people who travel a lot! Very i flexible!

I am not very happy because the window to cancel your order is absurd!!!
By the time you receive your weeks order you basically already have to know if you want next weeks order or not. Customer service has been difficult and unhelpful. They sent orders to my house and charged me for them when I asked them not to. Food is ok. Smoothies are too sweet and don’t have enough fiber. Some dishes I like a lot, some less. I wish there was more solid food (not soups) low carb veggie dishes overall.

They use microwave safe containers. Just 2-4 minutes, a healthy meal is ready! Most important no dish washing needed~ yeah!!

Would prefer more purchasing options

Soups were delicious. Smoothies were OK. My biggest complaint is the price and lack of options. I loved the soups and would love to buy them a la carte however this is not an option. You are then forced to pay $100.00 which is rather pricey for 10 items, many of which I did not want. Again, I would actually be a loyal customer if you could purchase items separately.

I don't understand some of the other…

I don't understand some of the other reviewers. This service is top notch. The food is delicious (especially the soups). I've had no issues skipping weeks, cancelling, or reactivating service.

Customer service has always been very helpful.

Crap food. Impossible to Cancel.

The food was largely tasteless and the shakes had large chunks in them so I cancelled. But cancellation is really had. I received 2 boxes that I was charged for after cancellation. So I cancelled again and sent their customer service screenshots of my cancellation. But In their portal to contact customer service if you click the attachment you just attached to ensure it is the right screenshot you get a message that you are unauthorized to see your screenshot unless you login RK their zen desk application and when you go back you lose your message. It’s just a mess.

I really love the flavor of their soups…

I really love the flavor of their soups and smoothies.The nutrition to your body is wonderful. I felt a difference and so did my blood tests. My cholesterol went from 238 to 156 in 6 weeks. I know sometimes containers arrive broken or in hotter places arrive warm so you cant use them. Customer service is very responsive and credit you on your next shipment. Its not the companies fault if FedEx is not careful with your box or delivers late.

Leaking soups, unauthorized substitutions

I have gotten 2 deliveries from Splendid Spoon. The day after my first delivery I received a notification that my second order already processed even though I hadn't chosen my items yet and before I got the chance to try anything. I contacted support to see if I could at least modify the contents since I didnt like what they gave ne and I was told no it's too late (they did refund me for 2 shakes but it's not enough being I only was interested in 1 item in that order). When the second delivery came I noticed one soup leaking all over the box and that they had replaced the one soup I was happy to be getting with something else entirely. A few days later, I noticed a second soup also had a hole in the bottom and it leaked all over my fridge. Probably didnt notice right away because these "fresh" soups arrive mostly frozen. I reached out to them on social media with no response then ended up canceling and told them my reasons for canceling and no response. These are way too expensive for the quality and to get treated so poorly.
