Within the last 17 months of purchase

Within the last 17 months I purchased a Stannah stairlift through an approved Stannah installer, who installed a straight stairlift with a swing arm for me. Unfortunately on the 17th month it developed a problem with the swing arm not retracting up. The installer came out and replaced the gas strut at a charge of £170 for the labour and the part. Two days later I had to call them out again for the same problem, as the faulty gas strut made the gearbox/clutch weak. Luckily I was not charged again for this visit and part. As this all happened within just 17 months of purchasing the lift, I contacted Stannah to express my disappointment in their product, but they weren't interested in offering me any backup or help, even though I told them that according to the WEB a gas Strut should last for 5 to 10 years or 10,000 to 30,000 cycles! I would have expected Stannah to have concerns that a product of theirs wasn't fit for purpose within the 17th month of purchase! The original installer was helpful in putting the problem right for me. Also I pointed out to Stannah that their website says that all Stannah lifts include a 2 year warranty and 2 yearly routine visits. But I was told that it only applies if the lift it purchased directly from them. So as a manufacturer and installer of Stairlifts I am not impressed with with Stannah or their customer service!

It’s good to hear that your installer was able to resolve the issue, but we recognise your concerns around the reliability of the component and the costs involved.

As you mentioned, Stannah stairlifts can be purchased either directly from us or via our network of approved independent distributors. While all Stannah products are built to the same standards, servicing, warranty cover and call-out arrangements are managed by the company you purchase from. This means the cover provided can differ from the package offered when buying directly from Stannah.

That said, we take feedback like this seriously. Components such as gas struts are rigorously tested, and issues like the one you’ve described are not typical. We’re sorry that, on this occasion, this has impacted your overall experience, and we appreciate you bringing it to our attention.

The actual service was fine . Where we have a problem with your company is that once we have paid the £400.00 for the service last year, we then receive no acknowledgment as to thanks for the payment but more importantly when the service will take place.

I did tell your engineer this and he promised to discuss it with you.

My Stannah Experience

Each of the workmen were vere efiicient and polite. There was one for electrics, one to fit an extra "stair turn so as to avoid an single ordinary stair step up the landing which incidentally was less intrusive than I expected. The third workman fitted the chair itself and explained how everything worked. I have not given five stars because my lift is fitted with retractable runners which initially sometimes needed a couple of attempts to "catch". A call to your office has now remedied this within hours of phone call.

Being able to get up and down stairs in…

Being able to get up and down stairs in total safety, no more worry about falling.
One tiny niggle is the loudness of the beeping getting final part of rail into park position. Otherwise five stars for.product.

An appointment was made and rhe engineer came on time. He was very pleasant and serviced our stair lift and left no mess. He also told us the battery would have to be replaced next year. Always good to have advance notice of a more expense in the future.

Efficient but some minor omissions

Whilst the installation work went smoothly there were a couple of things omitted when compared with an identical Stannah stair lift installed a few weeks earlier in our three storey house. The upper remote control was not fitted to the wall but left lying loose. Nor was a label attached to the wall power socket that it was dedicated to the stair lift. Therefore just four stars instead of five I gave previously
My advice to other purchases is to ensure by asking or inspection that everything has been completed prior to signing off. That I failed to do.
