New Zealand in Depth (NZID) worked with me to arrange a trip for my wife and me from the United States to the North and South Islands in early 2026. When I am asked about the trip I say I have simply run out of superlatives to describe the experience. If I have to put it into one word -- unforgettable.

The itinerary that NZID put together for us was fantastic. I was particularly impressed with how, having listened to our desires, those desires were accommodated and better alternatives suggested. For example, I thought we would rent a car and drive; NZID suggested that we fly between the islands and rent two cars, minimizing our time on the road. Also, NZID suggested spending time in New Plymouth (which was completely off my radar) as a less touristy region, which we enjoyed immensely.

The excursions arranged by NZID were uniformly superb and well spaced. In every case, the scenery was sublime, the experiences were incredible and we were often treated like family or friends, not tourists.

The accommodations NZID arranged were absolutely top notch, the very definition of luxury, We even slept in a cottage nestled in a vineyard.

Bottom line, our experience with NZID was excellent and I would give NZID my highest possible recommendation.

We were fortunate to meet Paul Carberry at the Destinations Travel Show in London. He was a pleasure to deal with throughout a 2 year planning process and quickly understood our preferences and travel style.
We already had a specific itinerary in mind and rather than pushing his own "off the shelf" agenda Paul worked with us to enhance our plan providing some fantastic insights and alternative destinations which took us away from the standard tourist routes to see the real New Zealand - a truly "In Depth" experience which really enhanced our trip!
The accommodations suggested by Paul were of exceptional quality and suited our preferences perfectly, our only issue was that we always had to move on to the next destination!
Prior to travel we were sent a very detailed itinerary pack. This included full details for all of our accommodations and trips as well as comprehensive driving directions, suggested detours and places to visit en route - we carried this with us and found it invaluable.
When bad weather unfortunately caused flooding and landslips which cut off one of our destinations resulting in a necessary change to our itinerary both Paul and the team on the ground were on hand to provide alternative options and quickly and efficiently rebooked our accommodations removing the stress so we could enjoy our holiday.
Overall we had a fantastic trip which we considered to be extremely good value for money.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Paul and New Zealand In Depth and cannot wait to plan our return journey to NZ!

We had never been to NZ and we were so fortunate to meet Paul Carberry at a travel show in 2025.
He immediately understood our brief and designed 3 weeks on South Island that more than delivered everything we wanted.
It's hard to pick out highlights because there were so many, but amongst them was the visit to Stewart Island, the cruise on Doubtful Sound and the Farewell Spit tour.
The selection of accommodation was perfect and in some cases exceeded our expectations.
The driving was very easy and the views
( around almost every corner) were phenomenal.

Superb in-depth knowledge about all aspects of holidays to New Zealand.
We wanted a tailormade, self-drive trip that covered both the North and South Islands. After a detailed phone call with Paul to give him an understanding of our key interests and preferred accommodation types, an itinerary was created that perfectly met our expectations. It concentrated on areas of New Zealand that we were interested in and left out regions that were less important to us; it also included excursion options, some of which were real local activities. The accommodation choices of smaller lodges / hotels were fabulous.
The service from New Zealand In Depth never felt pushy; it was all about creating an itinerary personalised to us. This was knowledgeable, professional service delivered with passion and expertise.

Cannot speak highly enough of NZ In Depth. Every aspect of our month tour of North and South Islands was first class ! When 2 specific challenges arose regarding a Lodge catching fire where we were due to stay and separately, Ferry crossings being cancelled from Picton due to extreme weather, the local team were on it and had immediate solutions ! My sister and I just returned from a three week stay traveling through both the north and south islands of New Zealand. Our travel specialist Sally created an itinerary that allowed us to immerse ourselves in the beauty and historical significance of this amazing country. Meticulously planned to the finest detail, we seamlessly journeyed over 1400 miles by car to places and experiences beyond our wildest dreams. Every suggested excursion was a true adventure, complete with amazing and varying accommodations and fabulous food recommendations. The very few minor wrinkles we encountered were responded to and resolved immediately. This was especially important for two women traveling alone, providing us peace of mind that help was a mere email or phone call away. We have just returned from a six week break in New Zealand planned by Paul and the team at NZ In Depth.
Everything from the planning through to the flights home was exceptional. Paul and the team sorted all aspects of the trip from flights, car hire accommodation and experiences for us. His knowledge of each area and recommendations of what to do and where to stop were superb.
Finally just before we went he provided a complete itinerary including all accommodation addresses, experience locations and directions on how to get there. There team on the ground in New Zealand were in contact with us on a day of arrival to make sure everything was ok and even kept us updated in road closures that would impact our planned route.
I cannot thank Paul and team enough for this holiday, it was expertly planned and booked and left us with nothing to do except enjoy the trip.

Everything was done for us, Accommodation, car hire, trips, flights etc. The service is unbelievably good. New Zealand in Depth put together an amazing trip to NZ for us. We were focused on seeing the penguins, animals and the Southern Alps. We had a few hiccups and both Sally and the local operator were very helpful. Looking forward to booking another NZ trip with them!

We were recommended to use NZ in depth and we weren’t disappointed. Paul created a 3 week tour of the S Island, and we stayed in places , saw things and experienced stuff that we simply wouldn’t have done without his help. The places he picked for us to stay were particularly memorable , a farm, a vineyard, a boat, a historic old doctors surgery ……… they were great.

We wanted help to plan a trip to New Zealand. I was fortunate enough to get New Zealand In Depth from a Google search. After a brief chat with Sally it was clear she could help. Over a few weeks following various phone chats Sally compiled an itinerary shaped around our interests and objectives. It was a great start and a few weeks later we had a fully fleshed out trip outlined. The team then booked everything (cars, accommodation, excursions, trains and planes) and the trip came together. We are just back and I can share that everything without exception worked brilliantly. Sally had provided and booklet which took us through every journey, every day and all our activities in great detail that was by our side from dawn to dusk, guiding us through the trip. The country is wonderful and with Sally's help we enjoyed a 4 week discovery we will not forget.

We met Sally at The Destinations Show in London and were sufficiently impressed by her knowledge and enthusiasm to take discussions further. Over a series of calls with Sally, where we listed our desires, interests, and reasons for visiting NZ, Sally drew up a month's itinerary for the South Island, which she felt would best meet our goals. This not only encompassed locations, but also the style of accommodation and facilities needed, activities and method of travel. All this info was laid out in a very comprehensive booklet that was our bible during the trip. All the logistics went without a hitch. We loved the varied nature of the accommodation (most off the beaten track that I doubt I would ever have found), the planned trips (our highlight was the overnight boat trip down Doubtful Sound), the additional suggestions of things to do and side trips. It was an extremely successful holiday, after which we felt we'd achieved everything we'd originally intended from a visit to this exceptionally scenic island.

We have just got back from a 5 week trip to NZ planned by Paul. I can’t recommend him enough, it was simply amazing! Paul sat down with us & really listened to our interests and advised on best trips & alternatives. Each day was mapped out in a personalised booklet and highlighted interesting stops when we were travelling from A to B. The accommodation he chose was second to none. We feel we really maximised our time there and packed in so many adventures.

Paul was recommended to us by a friend and it proved to be the right decision to go with New Zealand in Depth. On meeting with Paul, he spent time to understand what we liked and what we had experienced on our travels elsewhere. The itinerary evolved and gave a well-balanced adventure of both islands from Auckland to Stewart Island. When there was a hiccough regarding a jetboat trip, the local agent arranged an alternative at short notice without fuss.
The booklet provided was the most comprehensive we have had from any travel company. The recommendations that Paul gave for side trips and places to eat were spot on but time wasn’t on our side to try them all.
It was interesting to note that in conversation with other travellers we met, many had researched and developed their own itinerary but hadn’t discovered some of the places we visited which proved the sense of going with New Zealand in Depth. Paul has visited many of the accommodations where we stayed and all the hosts spoke very highly of him.

We recently returned from a 4.5-week trip travelling around NZ organised by Paul Carberry. We thoroughly enjoyed every single moment. This was in no small part thanks to Paul’s help in the planning and faultless booking of our itinerary. His knowledge of the country seemed to be encyclopaedic. During the planning over many phone calls, he provided imaginative suggestions tempered with sound practicality. Having planned the trip for 2024, we had to cancel for health reasons but that was absolutely no problem, and the arrangements were just carried forward a year with no extra administrative costs.
The accommodation was always exactly right for us. We had stated that we liked rooms with a view and, WOW, did we have some good views! Our personalised loose-leaf booklet on our schedule became known as ‘the bible’ and gave us detailed travel directions with tips for where to stop en route either because of something to see or a good place to eat. It also gave us suggestions about the place where we were staying including possible additional activities and restaurant recommendations.
Having thought that this would be a once in a lifetime trip to NZ, we are now seriously thinking of a second visit and of course there is no doubt as to who we will ask to organise the trip.

This was a trip of a lifetime made all the more memorable by Paul’s fantastic planning. It was the care he took in making sure the itinerary met all our needs and expectations that made it so special.

We had several chats on the telephone pre booking to find out what we wanted to do, what we wanted to see and the level of hotel/b&b/lodges we expected and he tailored everything to his understanding of our requirements to perfection.

Fabulous train journeys, wonderful B&Bs (we would be happy to live in) and glorious lodges - none of which we would have found ourselves

Super experience with these guys. They were recommended by our friends who had been to NZ with them and they didn’t disappoint. Our plan was to go to Singapore, NZ and Oz over 9 wks and whilst their expertise was in NZ they sorted the lot for us.
