Paul/New Zealand in Depth was recommended to us by a friend. As he focuses solely on NZ his depth of knowledge about the country exceeds that of any standard travel agency. I understand he also travels there regularly each year so knows exactly what he is offering to his clients.
Our trip in November was created using his knowledge and our preferences, so everything we did and visited was the best experience for us.
We travelled only around the South Island to ensure we saw as much as possible and also managed to hook up with some old friends in Wānaka, which Paul built into the programme. I would like to think that we will return to see the North Island in the future and will definitely be using Paul’s expertise.

Our month long 2024 road trip to New Zealand’s South Island was nothing short of spectacular, and that is largely thanks to the outstanding service provided by Paul from NZ in Depth. As with our amazing 2018 trip to the North Island (also booked with NZ in Depth), from start to finish, he ensured every aspect of our journey was seamless, well-organized and tailored perfectly to our preferences.

The itinerary crafted for us was exceptional, covering many must-see highlights whilst also incorporating lots of hidden gems and places that we would have never discovered on our own. Each destination was carefully chosen to showcase the diverse beauty of the South Island: from stunning fjords, lakes and coast to the breathtaking drives.

What truly stood out was the attention to detail. The fabulous accommodations were well-located, offering picturesque views that made each stay special. Paul also provided us with detailed guides, including recommended spots for food, photo stops, and even local tips that enhanced our experience.

Throughout our journey, we felt fully supported by Paul and the team on the New Zealand side too. The communication was excellent, with quick responses to any questions or adjustments we needed along the way. Local knowledge shone through in every recommendation, ensuring we made the most of our time in this incredible part of the world.

Cannot recommend New Zealand in depth enough. We had never visited New Zealand before but wanted to go for our honeymoon. Paul put together a wonderful itinerary with fantastic local knowledge about the best places to eat, the driving routes, everything you could think of. We were originally travelling in 2023 but had to cancel fairly last minute because of a family illness - Paul was incredibly helpful dealing with everything for us and getting practically all our costs back (travel insurance covered the rest), then when we were ready to go again in 2024 he booked it all again and we couldn't be more grateful.

Our trip was fabulous and tailor made for us by Paul . After several conversations in person and by phone he produced a comprehensive itinerary in a neat folder for our 6 week trip to New Zealand, Singapore and the Cook Islands. All hotels and many experiences were booked, all of which he had personal knowledge, cars hired and flights arranged. There were recommendations for restaurants and other activities to do at each location and he was responsive by email for any snags. Paul was also interested to know how the trip went to add to his extensive portfolio of knowledge for the next client . We cannot recommend him highly enough This trip was to start my retirement and it was out of this world thanks to New Zealand In Depth's in depth knowledge.

We have just returned from 6 weeks in New Zealand organised by Paul Carberry at New Zealand in Depth.
It was our first time in NZ and we loved the diversity of the scenery and the friendly people.
Paul organised a trip of a lifetime, with every day bringing something different. We flew into Auckland and after a couple of nights drove to Russell and from there we pottered our way down the North Island and then over on the ferry to Picton from Wellington. We spent a further 3 weeks in the South Island finishing in Christchurch.
Paul had organised Everything down to the last detail, all we had to do was relax and enjoy a fabulous 6 weeks holiday in a country where you feel safe and the natural beauty srrrounds you.

Just back from a wonderful 5 week trip to New Zealand organised by Sally at New Zealand In Depth. I can’t rate Sally and the company highly enough, everything ran like clockwork and we stayed in a great variety of superb accommodations ; boutique hotels, motels and b&bs. Sally organised several trips, the car hire, ferries and all our accommodation after a few detailed chats about what we wanted from the holiday. The itinerary and personalised booklet provided before our trip was excellent with tips on where to eat, what to do at each location and where to stop/visit on all our long journeys.
Sally even coped with a complete change of travel dates (travelled a month earlier than originally planned) after our original itinerary was complete. I can not thank her enough for our trip of a lifetime. Wholeheartedly recommend this company to anyone thinking of going to this amazing country.

My wife and I recently traveled to Australia and New Zealand and worked with New Zealand In Depth in planning our month long trip. Sally Lilley was our trip advisor and she was outstanding, helping us to create a personalized trip that built on our interests and the activities that we had independently identified. Sally was extremely knowledgeable about both Australia and NZ - having lived in NZ for many years. In that regard she was able to bring our attention to areas within each country, hotels and activities that we were able to combine with what we had learned on our own to create our trip. Our plan was to spend 8 days in Australia (timed with the Australian Open) and 19 days in NZ, visiting both the North and South Islands. Our travels took us to Sydney, Hobart, Tasmania, Melbourne, Coromandel, Kapiti Coast, Wellington, Kaikoura, Dunedin, Mt. Cook and Queenstown. Sally is a great travel consultant. She is engaging, personable and was always responsive - both before and during the trip, connecting us to a local team member on the one occasion we needed assistance. Her suggestions for locations, hotels/lodges, and activities were spot on. I have no doubt that one of the reasons we had such a wonderful trip, is that we found Sally! New Zealand In Depth made all our hotel/lodge bookings, booked our special activities (like a guide for the Te Papa museum), and planned all of our transfers and flights/ferries while in Australia and NZ, with the only flights we needed to book being our travel to and from the two countries. I can't say enough good things about this company, including the fact that as we price shopped taking this trip with other travel companies, New Zealand In Depth was the least expensive, while still providing a very high quality product! Don't hesitate - use NZ In Depth when traveling to this part of the world!

We started planning our trip to New Zealand in 2019. Our hope was to visit the North and South Islands. Having travelled to previous destinations with various companies, we were tired of being shoved along their well-worn tourist routes. We were also becoming sceptical of those companies who were always eager for early payments and deposits.

We decided for our New Zealand trip to have something more bespoke, less corporate and above all affordable. After numerous searches both in the UK, Australia and Asia, we came across “New Zealand In Depth” based in the UK, headed up by Paul Carberry. From the very first call we could tell that Paul was the real deal. He specialises only in New Zealand and continually visits locations, hotels, lodgings etc so that he can offer his clients the very best experience. We visited a variety of locations in New Zealand and each proprietor spoke so highly of Paul.

Covid hit, but there was no panic or demands from Paul. He forged ahead with a magical itinerary that went back and forth making numerous amendments. By the time it was complete it was perfect!

Once Paul knew that it was safe to travel, he booked our flights. It was not until a month before our trip in February 2023 that Paul requested payment.

My wife and I just wish that Paul specialised in a few other destinations but in reality, what he does and the way he does New Zealand puts him head and shoulders above everyone else out there.

We can’t thank and praise Paul highly enough, not only for his professionalism and caring attitude, but above all, he is a genuinely honest and decent man.

First Class Service .Having used New Zealand In Depth several times in the past we have just done so again . As usual Paul was on the ball and organised our trip perfectly .Would thoroughly recommend his company to anyone wanting to travel to NZ .

We were very impressed with the service provided by New Zealand In Depth when planning a trip to New Zealand. Unfortunately the holiday ended up being cancelled in the end due to Covid restrictions but throughout the process, Sally and Paul were a pleasure to deal with, very knowledgable of our options, always willing to go above and beyond and very patient of the tweaks we wanted to make. Paul kindly ensured that we were refunded in full for the aborted trip.We are definitely planning on rebooking once this pandemic is finally over.

We met Harriet at the Destinations Travel Show and during that show we met others agents/tour guides for NZ. It is very easy to talk to her and she is very enthusiastic about New Zealand. We compared several others but it was obvious that NZID were ahead of the competition. We discussed our trip to NZ with Harriet and told her what we liked to do and Harriet quickly came back with an itinerary. We discussed each step and the options for our holiday and eventually came out with the final plan. Maps were supplied and we pored over them to try to get the best of the holiday. The information pack was comprehensive and easy to use. All of our comments were met with helpful suggestions and plans changed, as required. When we eventually started our holiday they were with us every step of the way and supporting as necessary. Who would have believed that, because of Covid 19, our holiday was cut short by two days and we would have been locked down in NZ for an extra 4 weeks. During this period they supported us and helped us with accommodation when we needed help and generally supporting us. Even setting up a WhatsApp group for all of their locked down customers. They went well beyond what we were expecting. They were brilliant.

From the moment we spoke to Paul to landing back in Heathrow at the end of our holiday, we felt he was guiding and supporting us 100% all the way. Initially, and for many hours over the following few months, he listened and asked questions to get a feel for the type of people we are - our likes, dislikes and passions - and gradually suggested places and activities he thought we would enjoy. When he put together our 9 week package he was spot on! Whenever we spoke with him we felt he had all the time in the world to speak and listen to us - he made us feel we were the most important customers he had!
The package he finally came up with was brilliant, every day we had a new adventure which was perfect for us. We felt his guiding hand in the shape of our 'bible' was there with us all the way - from the directions to get to our next accommodation with things to do and sights to see on the way to recommendations of places to eat once we were there.
And it wasn't just us who enthused over New Zealand in Depth, many of our accommodation hosts commented how easy and efficient the company is to work with.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend NZID to anyone who wants to enjoy the real New Zealand. Thankyou Paul and all your team.

From the beginning talking to Harriet, planning this trip, I felt I was getting a really professional service. I was made to feel that any changes I made were not an issue and everything was quickly and efficiently dealt with. I sensed that the company had really good relationships on the ground in New Zealand and that they were able to offer their experience in helping us to decide where we would travel over a four week period. The pack we received prior to the departure date was full of information, well organised and we felt we had everything we would need. Then Covid 19 struck and Harriet and Paul worked with us through the cancellation of all our arrangements at the very last minute. Our insurers have been less than helpful but New Zealand In Depth have managed virtually full refunds for our hotels, car hire, train trips and boat trips. We intend to go to New Zealand once this crisis is over and we will not hesitate in taking our business back to New Zealand In Depth.

I wanted to tell you what a fabulous holiday we had in New Zealand. Thank you for your excellent itinerary, recommendations, and organisation. Thanks also for sorting out the few problems we had while there, such as arranging an alternative jet boat ride when there was not enough water for the jet boat we were originally booked on.
We were lucky to have our holiday before coronavirus took hold and got back with a week to spare before lockdown.

Friends of ours had used Sally Lilley and In-Depth NZ to plan their trip to NZ and we loved their itinerary. We then worked with Sally to tailor theirs to our specific style and interests and ended up with a wonderful trip. They booked all of our lodging, ferry between North and South Islands, car rental and a few tours. Every check in was simple; we were always expected. No surprises. The only surprise was covid-19 which required us to end our trip about 6 days early. In-Depth (Sally and Audry) did all the cancellations necessary as we struggled with the airlines (we had done all the air ourselves) and worked hard to get us full refunds..
The lodging places (generally boutique hotels and B & B's) they recommended were unique and fun as well as beautiful. They provide a very helpful booklet with all needed information, contact numbers, maps, restaurant and activity information, optional scenic drives, and other useful which was our Bible while we were there. Great having it so well organize.

I can't give Paul a higher accolade than saying that ours is the 3rd trip he has organised for our family. The 1st was for my parents in 2004, when my Dad was 84, the 2nd for my brother and his wife in 2009, and then for Greg and me in January and February 2020. We are used to travelling independently, but one meeting with Paul in August last year convinced us that it would be foolish not to tap into his extensive knowledge of, and passion for the country. He listened intently to our aspirations for the trip - Greg's interest in Geography and Geology, my love of boat trips, the fact that we were happy to explore, in the main, by car, and also to self cater for some of the time. The itinerary he drew up was perfect, and all the accommodation was spot on. The detailed handbook and touring map became our Bible, and really covered everything we needed to know. As we were so far away from home, it was also reassuring to know that we could turn to Rebecca, the NZ agent, for any assistance. So my advice would be 'Don't waste time doing your own research. Paul has already done it for you!'

The whole trip was an absolute dream. Our expectations were high, from the stories we have heard from so many friends, but they were easily exceeded. A magical land. We have been lucky to do lots of travelling over the years, but the only other trip that I can recall having such an impact was our first visit to the USA, 40 years ago. The arrangements worked perfectly and you got the pace of trip that we wanted, just right. Our thanks too to Audrey for the in-country help.

New Zealand In Depth organised a five week holiday that passed without a hitch. The initial planning was thorough and included all we asked for and recommends by NZID. Their knowledge and experience kept our schedule realistic and relaxing. The accommodation arranged was exactly what we wanted. It was apparent from three stops that the company is held in high regard by the accommodation owners and we benefited from upgrades.
We were delighted with the organisation and would recommend them to anyone thinking of visiting NZ. The country is beautiful and the people friendly.

Really personal service - they couldn’t do enough to help! I told them what I wanted to do and what I wanted to see and they sorted it all out for me. Made my trip so much easier, they even checked all was ok on my arrival and during my trip. I would not hesitate to recommend them and will be using them again.

Sally At NZID was fantastic at suggesting an itinerary for us from just the barest of criteria - "don't like crowds & like walking." We went along with all her suggestions and are just back from 23 brilliant days in NZ.
