Not sure yet

Not sure yet. I received my product as expected, planted them over a month ago, but nothing is showing signs of life yet. Maybe they will some up on the spring, hopefully.

Jennie,

Thank you for your review. Since your plants were only planted a little over a month ago, it is still too early to determine that they have failed.

Many of our bare-root perennials spend their first growing season establishing strong root systems underground and may not produce visible top growth until the following spring.

Please leave them planted and continue normal care. We hope you'll be pleasantly surprised when they emerge next spring, and we'd love for you to come back and update your review when they do.

Bait and Switch experience based on Web page pictures

The picture on the web page showed full size mature plants. I ordered 25 to fill in my shade garden. What I received was 25 just sprouted seedlings. I expected more mature plants after spending more than $2 apiece for these plants. The description did not specify the exact plant size but the picture did not depict seedlings but mature plants. This was my first and LAST order. Very disappointed by what I received. 25 plants were sent in a 5x7 padded envelope. Never again.

Mary,

We're sorry you were disappointed, but we'd like to clarify an important misunderstanding.

The photos on our website show what the plants look like at maturity, just as most nursery and garden websites show mature plants so customers can see the eventual foliage, flowers, and landscape appearance. They are not intended to represent the exact size of every plant at the time of shipment.

TN Nursery specializes in bare-root and young nursery stock, which allows customers to purchase plants at substantially lower prices than mature container-grown specimens. You purchased 25 plants for just over $2 each—that pricing is simply not comparable to purchasing 25 mature, established plants from a retail garden center.

We also show and describe how our plants are shipped so customers know what to expect before purchasing. Shipping 25 young plants efficiently in protective packaging is one of the reasons we're able to keep both plant and shipping costs affordable.

Calling this a "bait and switch" suggests we intentionally advertised one product and secretly sent another. That is not what occurred. You received the young plants ordered; the mature photographs demonstrate what those plants can become once established.

We hope you'll give them time to grow before judging their long-term value.

I was extremely disappointed by the size and quality of the plants. I bought 2for1 plants and did not expect them to be large, but they were pathetic. I had ordered from you accidentally and will definitely not order from your site again.

We're sorry you were disappointed, but we'd like to clarify what you purchased.

TN Nursery specializes in bare-root and young nursery stock, and our BOGO plants are priced accordingly. Bare-root plants can look surprisingly small when they arrive because customers are receiving the living root or crown that establishes and develops into the mature plant shown on our website.

A small dormant plant is not necessarily a poor-quality or unhealthy plant. Many of our bare-root perennials spend their first growing season establishing underground and may not produce substantial visible growth until the following spring.

We're also sorry to hear you ordered from us "accidentally," but the size and appearance of young bare-root stock should not be compared with mature container plants sold at retail garden centers.

We hope you'll give the plants an opportunity to establish before deciding their quality based solely on their appearance upon arrival.

Chris,

Thank you for your feedback. Please don't assume the Coneflower root won't grow based solely on how it looks right now.

Coneflowers are shipped as dormant bare-root perennials, and the roots can look unimpressive when they arrive. That appearance alone does not necessarily mean the root is rotten or nonviable.

Once planted, Coneflowers often focus on establishing their root systems underground first and may not produce visible top growth until the following spring.

Please leave it planted and give it the proper establishment period. We hope you'll be pleasantly surprised when it emerges next spring!

Disappointing experience

It was a first to have plants shipped barefoot wrapped in paper in a common shipping envelope. The plants were completely dry and so were in terrible condition upon arrival. I did all I could to resuscitate them but only two managed to bounce back. It’s okay - lesson learned.

We're sorry you were disappointed with how the plants looked upon arrival.

TN Nursery specializes in bare-root plants, so they are intentionally shipped without pots or soil and carefully packaged for transit. Dormant bare-root plants can look surprisingly dry or lifeless when they arrive, but that appearance does not necessarily mean they are dead.

The fact that two of your plants have already produced growth is encouraging. The remaining plants may simply be establishing at a different rate. Many bare-root perennials focus on developing their root systems underground during their first season and may not produce visible top growth until the following spring.

Please don't give up on the remaining plants yet. Leave them planted, continue appropriate care, and give them their full establishment period. We hope you'll be pleasantly surprised next spring.

Nothing at all like the picture on your site

The website shows a picture of bareroot milkweed with lots of roots, very healthy looking. What I received looked like dried out sticks, very hard to tell which was the root end and which was the growth end. Planted them, nothing so far.

Respuesta de Tnnursery

We're sorry the Milkweed wasn't what you expected, but please don't assume the plants have failed simply because they haven't produced visible growth yet.

Milkweed is shipped as a dormant bare-root perennial, and individual roots naturally vary in size, shape, and appearance. Some may have more feeder roots than others, and dormant roots can look surprisingly dry or stick-like when they arrive.

The product photos show examples of our bare-root stock, but no two living root systems will ever look exactly alike.

Most importantly, Milkweed can spend its first season establishing underground and may not produce visible top growth until the following spring. Please leave the roots planted and give them their full establishment period before determining they haven't grown.

We hope you'll be pleasantly surprised when they emerge next spring and will consider updating your review.

Thank you for your review. We're glad your order arrived as expected.

Our vines are shipped bare-root and dormant, so they may not produce visible growth immediately after planting. Depending on the variety and time of year, they can spend their first season establishing strong root systems underground and may not produce visible top growth until the following spring.

Please leave them planted, keep the soil appropriately moist, and give them time to establish. We hope you'll be pleasantly surprised when they emerge next spring and will come back and update your review!

trillium rhizomes

I bought a package of trillium rhizomes. They were delivered in good condition. And they look very healthy. They also came with a very nice set of instructions on how to care for them.

The only issue is my fault. I ordered them on July 9, which was too early in the year when it is still hot. I should have waited until early fall. Since I didn't, I put them in my refrigerator to keep until it cools off. I'll get them in the ground this fall. If they don't survive, it will probably be because of my actions rather than the quality of the rhizomes that I ordered.

Less than half the plants I have…

Less than half the plants I have ordered have not survived in spite of amending the soil, planting in well drained soil, and planting in recommended locations. The most disturbing thing is having plants replaced without by the company without proper notification. For example, I ordered a butterfly garden that was supposed to contain various plants. I received 5 butterfly bushes which was fine. I received 10 trumpet vines which are highly invasive and for which I have no room to plant.

There is no way I can accommodate plants which not only choke out everything that I have planted but also reach heights of 30 feet and need extensive maintenance.

I trusted The Appalachian Storyteller’s recommendation that this was an excellent and honorable company which had provided plants for sites such as The Washington Monument, but I now realize that such sites have hundreds of people maintaining these plantings.
When looking online I found many complaints about this company and the failure of their plants to grow. I also researched the most trusted plant sources online and this company was not on the list.
When I went to the websites of the recommended suppliers the information I found about growth habits, warnings about invasiveness, optimal planting times and other valuable information which I found more useful. The other suppliers have lifetime warranties while TN Nursery supplies a gift certificate and limited time to determine success of the plants. TN Nursery is so expensive especially shipping costs for a small package containing only roots.

We're sorry you're disappointed, but several different issues are being combined in this review.

First, please don't assume the plants that haven't produced visible growth have died. Many of our bare-root perennials establish underground during their first growing season and may not produce visible top growth until the following spring.

Regarding the Butterfly Garden, our plant collections are assortments and may include substitutions based on seasonal availability. However, if you believe you received 10 Trumpet Vines in place of the advertised assortment, please contact us with your order number so we can review exactly what was selected and shipped.

Your review also relies heavily on complaints, rankings, and information you found about other companies online. Those sources do not describe your individual transaction with TN Nursery, and warranty programs and pricing structures vary considerably between nurseries.

Shipping bare-root plants also allows us to offer many varieties at substantially lower plant prices than comparable mature container-grown plants. Customers are paying for viable nursery stock—not the weight or size of the shipping package.

TN Nursery has been a family-owned nursery since 1959, and we have supplied plants for residential gardens as well as prominent projects across the country. We appreciate your feedback, but we encourage you to give your bare-root plants their full establishment period before determining their survival rate.

I was quite annoyed at the almost constant emails asking me to do something to get my order a day earlier or whatever it was. I placed an order, why couldn't it just be shipped in a timely manner? It's doubtful I'll order from this company again, sorry to say.

We're sorry the automated emails became frustrating.

Those messages are not telling customers they must do something before we'll ship their order. We ask customers for an honest review of their shopping and website experience, which helps us identify checkout issues and keep our website running smoothly. Any shipping upgrade offered with that feedback is simply an optional benefit.

Your order is still processed according to its normal shipping schedule whether you participate or not.

We appreciate your feedback regarding the frequency of the emails and understand that receiving too many messages can be frustrating.

We're sorry bare-root plants weren't what you expected.

TN Nursery is a bare-root nursery, and we clearly state on our product pages that these plants are shipped bare-root and dormant. We also show customers what the bare roots look like before purchasing so they know what to expect.

Bare-root plants naturally look very different from potted plants. Many of our bare-root perennials spend their first growing season establishing strong root systems underground and may not produce visible top growth until the following spring.

Not seeing growth yet does not necessarily mean the plants have failed. Please leave them planted and give them their normal establishment period. We hope you'll be pleasantly surprised next spring.

Kelley,

Thank you for your feedback.

Many of our plants are shipped bare-root and dormant, and depending on the variety, they can appear to be little more than a stem when they arrive. That does not mean the plant is nonviable.

The important part is the living root or crown below the stem. Once planted, many bare-root plants focus on establishing underground first and may not produce substantial visible growth until the following spring.

Please give it time to establish before assuming it will not grow. We hope you'll be pleasantly surprised when it emerges!
