About 2.5 years ago I purchased a Le Creuset pan with "toughened" non-stick. It was not cheap at the time, but now retails for close to £200.

Any way, although the pan has been cared for (plastic utensils, hand washed), the non-stick has started to fail. Given that cheap non-stick pans last more than 2.5 years, I thought that under the "lifetime" warranty, Le Creuset would repair or replace my premium pan.

Not the case. They are refusing to do this claiming it is either "wear and tear" or "heat damage" even though there is no evidence of heat damage whatsoever.

If you want a non-stick pan that lasts, then buy a cheap £20 pan, not a Le Creuset.

Le Creuset guarantee is worthless.

After around ten years, the non stick coating on my Le Crueset frying pan was peeling off- making it possible dangerous to use. I sent the pan back to Le Creuset under the impression that it was under lifetime warranty.

I’ll post the response in full below- but it is worth noting:
- It took Le Creuset all of 7 mins between confirming receipt of the pan and rejecting the claim- put simply I don’t believe it was inspected at all.
- They put the damage down to wear and tear. I don’t agree with this- I think it was defective. They don’t define wear and tear precisely anywhere.
- As far as I can tell you aren’t entitled to any further evidence and have no right to appeal.

Taking all of these things together I’d call their lifetime guarantee misleading at best.

Their response was as follows:

Dear James,

Thank you for sending your Le Creuset product to our helpline for inspection. We appreciate the time you’ve taken to return them to us.

The lifetime guarantee for our Toughened Non‑Stick range was introduced in 2012; items purchased before this date were covered by a 10‑year guarantee. Our guarantee covers faults in manufacture or materials, but it does not extend to accidental damage, misuse, or wear and tear.

Inspection Findings:
A visual inspection was completed. The 30cm Toughened Nonstick Deep Frying Pan displayed extensive scratches across both the interior non-stick cooking surface and the exterior of the pan. The pattern of wear is consistent with utensil use, contact during storage, cleaning methods, and general use over time.
Conclusion:
The scratching observed is consistent with normal wear and tear and is not considered a manufacturing or material fault. As such, this type of damage is not covered under the terms of our guarantee.
Outcome: Claim rejected.
Resolution:
We appreciate that this outcome may be disappointing; however, after careful inspection, no manufacturing fault was identified. As the condition of the pan is consistent with use-related wear and tear, we are unable to offer a replacement under the terms of our guarantee.
Safety Status:
No immediate safety concerns were identified; however, the scratches to the non-stick coating may affect cooking performance and food release properties over time.
Recommendation:
To help prolong the life of your cookware, we recommend using silicone, wooden, or heat-resistant plastic utensils and avoiding metal utensils where possible. Hand washing with a soft sponge and non-abrasive cleaning products is recommended to help preserve the non-stick coating and exterior finish. When storing cookware, use pan protectors or a soft cloth between items to minimise scratching and surface wear.

As a user of La Creuset cookware for over 40 years, I was rather disappointed with the response from the company saying that they wouldn’t give any guarantees on my worn out cookware. Even though they now give a lifetime guarantee.

I’ve advocated the cookware all my life and so I thought they could at least offer some sort of discount on replacement items for my worn out pans.

I contacted Le Creuset UK regarding the deterioration of the surface around the top edge of my sauté pan. I have had the pan for around 7/8 years. Their response was quick and efficient - they asked for me to return the pan for inspection. Once received they contacted me within an hour to say that even though the deterioration wasn't due to a defect that as a goodwill gesture they would replace it. The new pan was delivered within 2 days.

I am really happy with all of the items that we use from Le Creuset- we have a lot which we use every day. Even when we had a minor issue with one of our baking trays Carla dealt with it on the same day that we raised it and offered to replace it. I highly recommend them.
