I have been waiting for my tenants water bill which has not been sent for the last 6 months. the tenant has now moved out without paying the water bills. I have contacted Ginger several times now each time they say it will be out end of the week. customer service has really gone down hill.

Thank you for leaving a review. Sorry that we have not been able to dispatch invoices when they are expected. The landlord is are reliant on receiving invoices from the water company before they instruct us to release invoices on their behalf to you.

Poor service and practice standards

This provider works on behalf of their client, usually a large landlord, I note most of the positive reviews are from the landlords.
This company is unprofessional, has no understanding of GDPR or contracts and cannot complete simple requests. Unfortunately, they are unregulated and therefore it makes it difficult to follow a process such as a complaint to the ombudsman.

The positive reviews are from our Clients. Conversely, the negative ones come from residents, unhappy at being charged for energy.

Your claims that we have no understanding of GDPR are simply untrue. As it’s been explained on many occasions to residents, we are appointed as a billing agent to compliantly invoice residents who are charged for energy by the landlord. The landlord has a duty to produce invoices to final customers under regulation, and as a result we hold their customer data under legitimate interest.

Just avoid this irresponsible energy …

Just avoid this irresponsible energy provider. There is no one in Ginger to response emails or followup issues on bills. They have overcharged based on mistakes in manual reading and never try to clarify or explain what happened on our bills. Due to its situation we couldn't use 400£ governmental support on our bills in Broadway. We couldn't change this awful provider because they are in a close connection to Centric! Worst customer services and rude manners in respinsing to tenants. I hope one day this company get improved and compensate their mistakes. Every where I will say just avoid this horrible company.

Dear Zz,

Despite multiple communications on this matter, you seem unable to understand that we are a billing agent not an energy supplier.

The landlord supplies your power, not us. This is why you can’t change supplier. It is nothing to do with us or Centrick, rather the building you choose to live in’s infrastruture.

The £400 that you speak of is a government fund which has yet to be given out by them so cannot be passed onto you. Neither us or landlord or us are responsible for that. Therefore your frustrations perhaps should aimed at the regulator not ourselves.

With regard to our lack of service to you, our call return time is typically less than 48 hours at the most busy times. However, if you are raising the same issues that we have already responded to or have sent communications out about, the call- back time may be longer because we prioritise other residents who need our help.

If you feel you still don’t understand our communications or have unanswered questions please call back in and a member of the team will try to assist.

We are here to produce accurate bills and if you believe the reading taken is incorrect please send us an alternative reading and we will investigate further.

Finally I’m sorry that our many communications are not being received or understood by you. I will look at what we can do more to educate residents on their energy arrangements and the parties involved.

As soon as we hear from OFGEM about how the £400 is to be distributed, we will write another communication updating residents.

Thank you Lisa

Beware Heat Networks

I have recently complained about Ginger Energy and left very poor reviews.
The residents in my apartment block were purplexed as to how the rate for the supply of Gas in our Heat Network was excessively high.
However after doing extensive research, I have discovered that this is mainly down to the fact that our Heat Network is only 56% efficient.
This means that we are being charged for the units we are using, and then further charged for the 44% we are losing due to the Heat Network being so inefficient.
Apparently this is standard practice for Heat Networks and verified by the Heat Trust, who tell me that they have known efficiency rates as low as 19%!
In order to reduce Carbon Emissions the Government plans to extend these ' Pink Elephant ' networks to 5 million users by 2030.
If you are thinking of buying an apartment with one of these systems in use BEWARE.
Thank you to Ginger Energy for helping me get to the bottom of this.

Terrible company

Terrible company! After not sending any bill for our apartment for over 6 months they decide to say they have now sorted the building contract out finally and then send us 6 months of bills at the same time… after emailing them and telling them it’s seems unfair that they expect all the money at once out of the blue which was £400! They say they will organise an 3 month payment plan to help with the payments. The next morning I woke up to a threat email saying we have 7 days to pay or our details will be sent to a debt collection agency! Disgusting company with disgusting values it would seem to me.

Only cases, where no payment commitment were supposed to be sent to them. Thank you

Ginger has looked after my various companies for six years now, I have compared them several times to other agents and they have always been competitive. Energy costs are unbelievable at the moment with one of my company's annual costs doubling, this was caused by the crazy current situation and the good deal Ginger found for me 3 years ago, Doesn't make it easier to accept, but not fair to shoot the messenger either!

Thank you so much for your understanding Ian. There are many residents who do not understand our position in all of this and wrongly assume we are benefiting in some way from the price increases. It is truly horrible for my team to be the messenger, as we have always done our best to secure best value contracts.

We are doing everything we can to raise the issue of residents who receive communal heat or power via a 2nd tier supply such as their landlord and are therefore not protected by the price cap and who ( if there power is also through a private supply ) wont receive the £400 grant either, with the media, to force a change by OFGEM. Awful Company - Extortion

I have absolutely nothing positive to say about this company. They charge extortionate prices and have zero customer service. It seems they are better at responding to negative replies on Trust Pilot than via email, so here goes another attempt at getting an answer that isn’t copy and pasted.

I rent a 1 bedroom flat at Broadway Residences via Centrick Properties, am a single occupant and work away from home. As many others have said, up until October prices were affordable. Right at the time when everyone needed to start using their electric heaters the prices were hiked massively. Previous to October my day rate was 13.46p kWh and 10.65p kWh at night. That was increased to 31.63p kWh as a whole, with the reduced night rate scrapped completely. This lead to an increase from roughly £30-£45 a month to £150+, just on electricity. In what word is a 234% increase either realistic or necessary?

Here is an extract from a Which? article from 2021:

Up to 15 million customers faced a bill increase from 1 October 2021. That’s because the price caps on out-of-contract energy deals rose, adding £139 on average to annual bills – more if you have a prepayment meter or use lots of energy.

I have seen an increase of almost £139 a MONTH, let alone annually.

I have previously lived in a 3 bedroom house that had considerably lower bills. Admittedly we have all seen bills rise recently, but having spoken to several friends and family members this price rise is absolutely ridiculous. They say that it is the most competitive they could find when they sent out to tender, but even if I try and find another company with worse rates I can’t. I ask you, prove to your customers that these were the best you could achieve. Where is the evidence?

Recently I have canvassed the entire building and will be working with other residents to ensure that every person in the building is aware of the ridiculous prices you are charging. This increase will result in myself and countless other residents not renewing their lease here and I will be making sure any future residents are aware of the extortionate prices they will have to pay. We will be contacting landlords directly and putting pressure on until this issue is resolved.

Please join our campaign Change.org/gingerenergy. Ginger Energy are a billing agent, it is the landlord who charges you and not ourselves. They are passing on the prices the building is being charged by the supply company with no additional uplift to your building in line with the OFGEM rules on reselling.

They have sourced the very best value, best fit contract for the building which was on offer by the suppliers.
We agree, it is a very high price but there is very little we can do as it reflects the global market. We have communicated to residents on a number of occasions the issue with purchasing for a commercial meter which supplies domestic residents but until OFGEM make the price cap more far reaching to protect residents like you, we cannot access lower prices contracts.
Please understand that this situation is very bad residents and also for our business, because residents wrongly believe that we / the landlord are benefiting from the price increase. This is not the case the landlord simply passes on what the supplier is invoicing and Gingers fees for customer service have not changed in 7 years. I'm sorry that you blame us but we are really not at fault, unfortunately we are the messenger as you receive invoices from the landlord via ourselves who pay the supplier and I really wish there was more we can do to effect the prices you pay. Please know that until the recent energy crisis, the prices that were charged by the energy suppliers on a commercial tariff was significantly less than what a domestic consumer would pay. Unfortunately in the last year, this has reversed and now commercial contracts are, for the first time, more expensive than the subsidised domestic contract which has a price cap enforced.

Only giving one star as I can’t give…

Only giving one star as I can’t give zero.
This is an extortionist company at best. How am I paying £300 per month, in a two bed, one bathroom apartment?
We barely use the heater (Birmingham is currently freezing btw). We barely use the lighting.
I was away for a week+ and my bills still came up to £289.
The bills also don’t come in on time or regularly.
Nobody explains why the bills are so high or even takes the meter readings.
If I were you, I’d stay away.

Im sorry you feel this way. These charges are a reflection of the current market conditions which is a European wide issue effecting millions of consumers. Our fees for billing are exactly the same as they were last year. The only difference is the price that is paid for the commodity be that gas or electricity. We are doing what we can to raise this issue with Ofgem and Westminster on residents behalf. If you would like to sign our petition on Change.Org look up " Ginger Energy" the more signatures we get the more hopeful we will be that something is done to address the issues. If you also google Ginger Energy and news, you should also see that we are speaking out on your behalf. I'm sorry you feel its Ginger that is profiteering from the price increase but i can confirm we are not in anyway benefiting from the increase and finally i would reiterate the bills come from your landlord not ourselves and are used to pay the energy suppliers charges. We are the billing agent not the entity claiming the funds from you.

Extortion

Ginger was a really good company for the first 7 months of my tenancy however with the UK price increases ginger seem to have taken that as an excuse to charge us extortionate rates knowing that we can't switch from them. My bills have gone from 14.50 per kwh to 42.57 and they're claiming that to be the best deal when it's over twice what anyone else I know is paying and triple what I was paying before. This is extortion at its very finest.

Hi Ella.

The rates are the best value deal on the market available for your building.

We too are horrified by the current prices and you as residents are amongst the first to feel the effect of what is going on in the UK and global energy market.

We have written a letter to OFGEM on your and other residents behalf as we feel the whole economy will be dramatically effected by the rises.

What I would like to point out is that we are a billing agent and as such are contracted to pass on the rates, billed by the energy company to the blocks owner.
We charge a fixed fee for our billing service. In essence it makes no financial difference to us, if we you get charged 15p or 42p as we get the same fee for passing these charges onward and our fees have not changed despite your price rise. I hope that clarifies for you that we are not benefiting from the price increase.

We will continue to raise the issue of inordinately high energy rates but given they are reflective of the global energy crisis I feel we have little chance of making a change.

Unfortunately, by being an billing agent we have inadvertently exposed ourselves and our good reputation to damage as we are blamed by residents for the market of which we have no control as its our name you see on the invoice.

We will continue to do our best to help residents and confirm this tariff was the best tariff offered to us when we reviewed the market.

Kind regards

Ginger Energy

I live at Broadway residences

I live at Broadway residences, my electric bill was around 30-40 pounds per month and then all of a sudden jumped to £150 per month. Contacted ginger and was told that they had trippled the tariff and there was nothing we could do about it. We are barely home and never use the heating so a bill of this price is an absolute joke.

We completed a tender and unfortunately these were the best prices available for the supply. Its a horrific market at the moment but not entering into a new contract and letting the contract go onto variable rates was not an option as the variable rates were even higher. We are sorry for the price increase but this is reflective of the UK's energy market. Unfortunately due to the buildings infrastructure you do not have your own supply point. Instead you share the landlords supply hence its impossible for you to change supplier. Rest assured the costs the supplier charges the landlord is passed onto you without profit added.

After renting with Centrick properties…

After renting with Centrick properties we were forced to be with this company. During 2020, they announced that they hadn’t taken readings for a whole year due to “WiFi” issues - they then claimed we owed £1000s. After disputing the charges, we were sent lengthy emails with up to 25 pdf attachments, none of which explained the ridiculously high bills. We asked to change provider but we’re told that on Broadway Residences this wasn’t allowed and we had to be with Ginger. A very dodgy set up.

——

In response to Ginger -
Perhaps residents don’t feel safe using their real names because your company is so corrupt. It is not fair to not give residents the choice of energy provider - nor is it fair to not charge residents regularly and make a mistake on your billing. You can see from the multiple review that this company has got that they are not trustworthy or - are just incompetent.

Having checked our records there is no Jane documented as living in this apartment block. If the author would like to write back or to us directly with their details we can investigate. For the benefit of readers, this building has a single incoming electricity supply. The residents share that supply point to power and heat inside their apartments. The building owner is liable to the energy supply company for the entire block's consumption. The owner appoint's a Billing Agent to recharge each resident for their share of the supply based on each residents sub meter reading. Ginger Energy are currently the appointed Billing Agent. When meter readings are not available estimated invoices are dispatched. Eventually, when a meter reading is obtained, it could result in a catch-up invoice due if the previous invoices were under estimated.

Didn’t get a chance whether to go with this company or not. Apparently if you live in Broadway Residences, you’re not allowed the choice. Ridiculous bills, outrageous prices, bills in the £1000s for one month in a tiny flat. What a mess. DO NOT TRUST

Having checked our records we have never produce a bill for anywhere near £1000 for a single months consumption. We have produced catch-up invoice due to previous under estimated invoices. This would appear on a single invoice but not be reflected of a months consumption. When meter readings are not available invoices are sent using estimated readings. This invoices are clearly marked as estimates and bill payers can always provide their own reading to ensure they do not receive under estimated billing and consequently a later catch-up invoice.

Absolutely awful experience with this company. Charges are random, inconsistent and incorrect. Charged us £960 for ONE MONTH in a small 2 bed apartment with just a 7 lightbulbs and one kettle and showering. After complaining, the company sent us an email with 25 pdfs which still didn’t explain the charges. Ginger billing appear to have set up a relationship with centrick properties as neither one provides clear support or answers to concerns or questions. Unable to change providers - apparently it’s not allowed. This company are absolute cowboys - AVOID IF YOU CAN!!
